D5 Region 17

Also. As it sits… still in July… Norwayne should feature one of the best tandem backfields in the state. Their demise was line execution last year so it might ba a positive that the line is new this year. If Stanley has receivers to throw to then I think Norwayne is literally built to abuse one of D5’s greatest defenses in Garaway. The pirates committing to that spread is a crime. Triway does the same thing every year all day… You know what the difference is between a great Triway team and bad Triway team? Whether or not they have the athletic pieces to pull it off. (QB/Wideouts) …and Garaway, has a lot of growing to do here. Norwayne is my pick early here. But I have BOTH eyes fixed on Mooney. (If they’ve put the moves in to have them on an upswing as reported)
Keep counting us out buddy ask SR, Garaway should not be afraid of anybody. Not having athletic pieces plz

Heard from a couple sources there was a 7on 7 at Salem last week and SR was above and beyond all teams there athletically without skirpac even being there. Good sign for the raiders

This the region 17 thread? I’m posting objective OPINIONS about the top tier teams in this region. (Which really shouldn’t hold any value at all.) Having emotional reactions to my comments is a “you” problem.

I’ve heard everything under the sun regarding VC this year. Jury is out there. Hope NMS continues a successful run post Brungard down in D7.

VCS will be ok and win games, but their best win last year was Wellsville. The 2 good teams they played- Labrae and Southern- absolutely crushed them (must worse than the scores, VCS scored a couple mop up td's each game). The Eagles have some good athletes at the skill positions but are not good in the trenches. They also have to replace their QB who could sling it pretty good last year.

Nobody that jumps off the page, Springfield/salem/valley Christian Forsure tho
The Raiders were not tested with 7 on 7's against Wellsville, Minerva, and Lisbon. I'm not sure who they scrimmaged in the playoff round, but I wouldn't put much, if any, stock in a 7 on 7 scrimmage. I'm not sure, but I think Skripac is still playing summer baseball. (Probably where he will earn a scholarship for playing in college) Being a senior, I wouldn't worry too much about him missing a flag football game. ?

Yeah he was out of town for baseball is what I was told

...And Wellsville was missing their best player that game. They should be decent with QB as Peete moves over from WR. Batista had a strong arm but really couldn't run for positive yardage on a consistent basis. Peete will give them another dimension as a faster QB. And yes, the key will be to actually beat a good team. Something that they haven't done since '18

I watched the tape of the Independence game, VCS is/was not good at all.

Who’s the favorites to win this region??
Garaway, Norwayne, South Range and the G-Men would be my top picks to get it done.
Garaway gave South Range all they wanted in the playoffs last year. In fact, if Garaway had scored
on the drive where S Range picked the Pirates deep in S Range territory, the Pirates would have
won that game. And Garaway has a lot coming back from what I've read.

I think those 2 meet again, no disrespect to the other teams, those 2 just play such sound football and don’t beat themselves. Here’s to a fun year!

Not to be a jerk, but I don’t think Garfield has a shot to compete with the top 3 this year

1. Garaway return almost everything plus some talented jr's that will surprise, by far the pirates best team ever.
2. Norwayne could beat anyone on any given night
3. South Range might be down a little bit
4. Perry is always good
5. Akron Manchester up swing again

My top 5

Agreed garaway is the top for now and Norwayne and south range is a toss up but I believe Norwayne has the best offense out of this bunch . But garaway definitely has the best defense .

I’m sticking with South Range until someone proves me otherwise. Got the quarterback back and a couple of really nice pieces. That’s not a program that has a good class and then falls off a cliff that’s a good program that reloads. I know Perry has been a very good team for about a decade now playing larger schools. Norwayne was really good the last time I paid attention to them about a decade ago which seems like it was yesterday and garaway obviously took Southrange to the wire.

outside of those four does anybody else really have a shot?

Quick answer - nope.

Slightly longer answer - don't really have one except to say that's a pretty good top 4.

Yeagley does a great job of rotating players every year, getting underclassmen some quality time on varsity Friday nights. New starters don't go out there wide-eyed and unprepared. They lose Dominguez (running back), Jones (tight end), Lally (tackle), Crormell (Guard/linebacker) and a few other linemen. I think the key for the Raiders will be how those "new" linemen all mesh. Skill positions should be fine on offense, and defensively the linebacker and secondary should be solid. It will all come down to the line of scrimmage.

How many years do you think he has left? I’ve heard rumors this might be his last year but I also heard he wants to stay at least another 3

Good question. I wondered about ten years ago when his youngest son graduated if he would step aside. I think he loves what he does, and the boys love him. It will be the hardest thing he ever does when he decides that it is time to hang up the whistle.

That being said, he retired as a teacher in the school last year, and him and his wife moved into a smaller home, so he is slowly scaling things back. He also has some assistants like Rach or Toy that he would probably feel comfortable in handling over the reins. I haven't talked to him personally, and he probably wouldn't say anything anyways, but I wouldn't be surprised if he resigned as coach in the next few years.

i know toy has a kid I believe in 7th so I could see him taking over in a couple years

Yeah, the questions will be on the line. Their skill will be outstanding. So, honestly, they should crush 7v7 stuff. That's not the issue.

Garaway will need to improve in the kicking game. They beat South Range if they had a kicking game last year. That D for Garaway will be stifling again this year. What does SR have coming back?
