Cleveland Guardians

Was at a family party and missed the game; it looks like I missed a good one!

Good to see Manzardo get his first major league home run!

The Guardians win the Pittsburgh series today and thanks to the Astros will go into their final series of the season with KC with a 1/2 game larger lead than they had when the Royals came to Cleveland for that 4-game series last week. It would be very nice to win this series and leave the Royals 4.5 games behind with only 22 left to play. Bring on the Royals.

The good…

Cobb…Manzardo…KC swept.

The bad…

Houston is closing in on the Guardians for the first round bye. They end the regular season against each other. Could be a ton on the line.

The Guardians still have a 3-game lead over the Astros but Houston has a more favorable remaining schedule IMO. It may well come down to that last series for the bye, although right now the Guardians are only a game behind the Yankees for the best record in the AL. I'll be happy as long as the Guardians qualify but I would like to see them win the division and get a bye.

This game is looking like one of those shutouts the Guardians have suffered this year. Lots of pop ups and weak ground balls. One hit through 4 innings. Need to wake up the bats before KC adds on to their 1-0 lead.

GO GUARDS!

Immediately after I posted above Big Christmas singled and Lane Thomas hit his 1st HR as a Guardian to take a 2-1 lead. Bo & Roccio then followed with hits but the Guards couldn't add on. 2-1 Guardians in the 5th with the Big Rig looking good so far.

GO GUARDS!

Third straight game where the Guards' starter only gave up 1 run and the run Mr. Cobb gave up was unearned. The Big Rig was outstanding today and the bats came to life in the 5th. Big win to start this road trip. Let's go out and win the series tomorrow guys.

A few weeks ago I was hoping we would see an effective rotation of Bibee, Lively, Williams, Boyd and Cobb, as well as Lane Thomas hitting like he can back when I was even hoping they would trade for him last season…and we are seeing it! Just when I was at my lowest hopes for the team after that third loss to KC, they are getting to where they need to be if they want that division title and first round bye.

The Reds just helped the Guardians out by beating Houston, 5-3. Hopefully the Rays will do the same by beating the Twins.

Now, with baseball being the eternal optimist’s sport, CLE has a one game lead with Pittsburgh coming in for three this weekend and they won’t face Skenes. Meanwhile, KC has to go to Houston. Then CLE goes to KC next Monday and the results of this weekend and that Royals series might just decide the season.

Is this the thread where all the gloom and doom was being posted a week ago?
That’s what baseball does. A 162 game rollercoaster ride.

Assuming that Bibee doesn't come out for the 7th inning that is the 4th straight game the Guardians starting pitcher only gives up 1 run.

That freaking Roccio can't do anything right. Two failed bunt attempts followed by a 2-run HR. :) 4-1 Guards in the top of the 7th.

Plus the Rays beat the Twins.

Another great job by the pitching staff to drop the Royals 5.5 games behind. Bibee did a great job getting out of that bases loaded 1-out situation in the 6th to maintain a 2-1 lead and the bats took over from there adding 5 more runs. May as well go out and get the sweep tomorrow guys.

Get the sweep. Complete the burial of the Royals. Keep as much distance between CLE and Houston as possible. Let’s see Lively complete a clean sweep through the new rotation…Boyd, Cobb, Williams, Bibee, Lively. And if they can get ahead of the Yankees…okay, I’ll stop dreaming now - haha.

That was actually a no-out bases loaded situation in the 6th that Bibee got out of only allowing 1 run. I was thinking it was 1-out because Pham scored from 3rd on a sac fly that was the 2nd out but I forgot that was because he slipped going back to tag on the 1st out fly ball that should have been a sac fly. That was a bit of a break for Bibee there but he did a great job limiting the damage.

Well, the Guards have tied the Yankees at least temporarily. Unfortunately Cleveland does not have the tiebreaker with NY but the Guardians are only 1/2 game back of the Orioles and they do own the tiebreaker against the Birds. Hopefully the Reds, Rays and Rangers will help Cleveland out again today while the Guardians try to sweep KC. I would have added the ChiSox to that list but that's a bridge too far. :)

The poor ChiSox. But with baseball there is always hope. The 1970 White Sox bottomed out with over 100 losses, but they jumped to 79 wins in 1979 under a promising young manager named Chuck Tanner, who then traded for a longtime family friend from PA, Dick Allen, and the 1972 White Sox almost won the division and Allen was AL MVP. Maybe Grady Sizemore can be the next Chuck Tanner? And he would have to convince some prodigious slugger to come to Chicago to help him.

And for even more current inspiration, the Royals were a train wreck last season with 106 losses. And the 2022 Rangers lost 94 games and won the 2023 World Series.

Saw a pretty incredible stat today - the AL Central is a cumulative 34 games under .500, but 4 of the 5 teams have at least a .500 record. That's how historically bad the White Sox have been.
