2025 Elder Football

I think it might have been the result of a vote by the member schools as opposed to a decision by the staff and board of directors.

The Columbus Dispatch wrote a good article last year about what is allowed for football in the offseason and the relatively recent adoption of 7-on-7 teams.
Regardless, I don't have an issue if a kid chooses to focus only on football (or any other sport), but it should be HIS choice. And like I've said before, one of the things that bothers me with College coaches is how often they talk out of both sides of their mouth. They always publicly claim to favor kids who play multiple sports, but then they'll stop recruiting kids who can't make certain camps in the off season. Even if the reason is the because the kid has obligations for another sport.

And 7 on 7 is so lame. You can't deduce anything from those events, because you're removing the most important element of play in the sport, which is the Line play. It's easy for a QB to make a bunch of impressive throws when he doesn't have to worry about a giant DL barreling down on him.

Agree on 7 on 7. Based on the websites I've seen for it and how it looks to be run in those cases, just screams "cash grab" to me and is likely filling lots of kids heads with empty promises

It makes sense that a bunch of schools are at the same place, but why is LaSalle's coach the contact if it's at Elder?

I think Omar is saying he doesn't like Elder helping these other schools by being the host, which is kinda dumb of Omar. Was this event also held at other schools like LaSalle or X or Moeller in the past? I would guess in situations like this, a rotation would be appropriate, but maybe Elder likes to use their facility to get coaches there for kids that are really good players, but may not have the measurables.

Who was the brainchild of this combine? Seems like a cool event to get some additional exposure for the kids, and it happens all over the city.

Omar doesn't understand that all the GCL schools are on the same team. His stance was understandable 20 years ago when he was a highschooler, not so much anymore. lol

I’m starting to wonder if there’s something to all of this grittiness talk. Some are crediting it to the election of Pope Leo.

Vince Skokal is a senior at St. Rita, and as the latest generation in a family of southsiders, he believes the pope's roots played a big role in his rise to the leader of the Catholic Church.

"There's something that comes with being from the South Side in general," Vince Skokal said. "There's like a grittiness, I believe, and like a hard work work ethic. And I think that's something that's always, you know, stuck with him.

Grit definitely matters. But Omar is right, talent matters more. Yes, there are times where grit overcomes, and it's a great story, but it doesn't win as much as talent does.

What's weird is wanting less talent to let the grit shine through and having talent is "selling out". OK, you're tough, but everyone already knows Elder kids are really tough. Why not just have both? I do think Elder kids do have more grit. There's something to be said for that.

It's not an either/or situation. Gritty kids can have talent, and talent can be gritty. You don't have to sell out to have both. I also agree this is an odd cope.

They’re not and it’s f’n lame to think that. Isn’t it weird how Michigan and Ohio State don’t fellate each other despite being in the same conference?

In saying all that, I also find it odd that Omar still has this much of a grudge against other GCL schools from a man approaching his 40s. But to be fair, I hear all the time how Elder fans still can't stand St X and Moeller. Also still kinda weird.

When these type of collaborations can help elevate the conference and get more opportunity for the kids, it's a good thing. But at the same time, it most certainly is your competitor. It's a fine line and really no different than any company competing for market share.

I will admit it warped into something I never intended, but I hopefully got all that out of my system with some help.

Grit definitely matters.

Elder is not the little engine that could. Elder has incredible resources, top coaches, 2 full time strength coaches, it's a private school, they have former NFL players, they send players every single year to D1 colleges, they are open enrollment.

Can we please stop with the underdog narrative?

Quick question for the Elder guys. Your QB from 2 years or so ago - I thought he went to the Naval Academy but don't think I saw his name on their roster. I'm pretty sure the USNA has a pre-varsity team so maybe he played on it. Just remember him to be a good runner and thrower and a kid that might thrive in a service academy offensive style. Maybe he ended up going elsewhere.

The Academies have freshman teams and that's what he played this past season.
