2024 Cincinnati Area Open Jobs

The sad part is that there’s some talent there but with a rotating door of coaches there is never any consistency for them to develop. There are only 2 underclassmen who are playing competitive AAU, it’s just not a priority in Oxford. Just hope this coach stays!!
There is not much talent there.

They were really good when the former former coach (itialian guy with the pat Riley hair) was there over a decade ago.

The previous coach(who came to Turpin last year) had a good season at talawanda.

I heard the Scott Ruthstatz from Cov Cath may have interest in LaSalle. Not exactly sure how credible the info is or if LaSalle would have common interest, but a coach with a good history of success.

Would be a good hire. The basketball program has declined significantly due to style of play and good players not wanting to play within that garbage style.

What garbage style?

Does anyone besides Elder play with any kind of good flow? Does the GCL have slugfests because of the emphasis on defense and offensive discipline?

Do you want teams coming out and jacking up shots with a higher tempo? They may get killed if they do that.

Lasalle seems to be the bottom of the barrel with GCLS talent… they got to do whatever they’ve got to do to compete

LaSalle's style under Goedde was garbage. It's part of the reason he got fired. All of the GCL does it, by it's by far the worst at LaSalle with overly physical play that more resembled football and wrestling. GCL schools teach their offensive sets, and 3 point shooting. That's it. They don't want kids who have the skills to break-down opponents with offensive moves. In fact, they hate having kids that go off-script.

Trust me, these kids are capable, they're just not allowed.

The GCL has plenty of talent. The style strips these kids of it. LaSalle used to have a ton of very good basketball players. The best players don't seek out the GCL outside of Moeller because of this tight and overly aggressive style.

And no one is saying kids should have the leeway to do whatever they want. It's a balance between running great stuff and allowing kids to use their basketball skills when they need to, especially if a shot clock is coming in the next 1-3 years.

The GCL, more or less, puts more resources on the floor to prevent teams from scoring vs. actually developing kids that can score. That's a fact.

Coaches like Ruthstatz (sp?) and Cupps are the best at finding that balance of sets vs. skills - and it shows with how many players on their rosters can contribute on the offensive end. The GCL just doesn't have that philosophy. They gear their offense around about 2 kids and EVERYONE else is a strict role player. For a team like Elder or LaSalle, they perfect their offensive execution, but if teams have them well scouted and have similar talent, they don't have kids that can create offense outside of their system, because they don't teach it or practice it. It's why teams like Elder and LaSalle have a ceiling every year.

Everyone always thinks you have to play a certain way to play in the GCL, and it's dumb. It's 6 games per year out of 25 - they should be building teams to make deep state runs, not to ensure their players are able and willing to knock people down 6 games out of the year. They are selling themselves short and people need to stop acting like there is no talent there and they have to play this way. That's freakin laughable where 3 of the 4 schools are city sports powers.

That style of play originated with Fleming, and embraced thereafter. I keep hearing about this style of play…nothing new.
But Fleming had some talented players that were able to do other things on the basketball court. LaSalle doesn't have anything close to the talent they once had in their hey dey with daddy Fleming. They had some really good teams and some really good players.

Seems Goedde was resigned to "we're not good, let's ugly it up". It wasn't basketball, and it was inevitable the style wasn't going to last. He may have been great to the kids and alumni, but didn't really enhance the development of the team or the individuals. And honestly, they didn't really execute that well either (compared to Elder who plays a similar style but are very well coached with great execution).

I don't like Elder's style either, but those kids execute you to death on both ends of the floor. They are always supremely prepared, which is a sign of excellent coaching.

Doublehelix I agree with on a lot of your statements on GCL style. I wont specifically comment on their coach but I wish also that they would give the kids a chance to make plays and create a little more. I do not like what the style is in AAU ball has become when they run up and down and 80% of the shots are 3 pointers but there has to be an in between. I for one have watched GCL games the last 2 seasons and wish it would change. Moeller success has been great over the last 25 years but we will see where it goes in the future. When you have the players who can do it give them some freedom. I know one who could possibly be a starter next year but probably wont play because he likes the uptempo style and it will drive him nuts to play their style. They seem to lose a lot a guys to the other sports or sometimes kids transferring out. Note that this year they only had 4 seniors on the team.

Yes, it was called the school voucher. It got them players, but the administration wasn’t collecting the difference owed, and the paying parents made notice. Soon thereafter, there was a change in administration. It’s a different environment from when Fleming was coaching.

Completely agree. While Moe has the best talent by far on the basketball court in the GCL, they aren't even close to the level of talent they had during their multiple state title runs. And yes, Carl can take the air out - you can't deny his success, but he also keeps the kids on a very short leash.

Centerville has the best program going in the SW region right now. Cupps is a GREAT coach and let's his guys develop their offensive skills over the course of their careers. His teams almost always have 4-5 threats on the floor at all times, and he plays a schedule where he's more concerned about good competition and development over wins. They are always balanced and battle tested.

Both St X and Elder have the talent in their schools to be like Centerville. They choose to play GCL ball instead, and that's the difference. This idea that the GCL has no basketball talent is ludicrous. You've been all led to believe it's "required" for the GCL teams to compete this way. It was literally created by the long-tenured coaches in that league (Fleming & Schoenfeld), mostly to try to keep up with Moeller.

At the present time, LaSalle isn't in the conversation unless they can find a coach that can flip the GCL script (not likely, because administrators are also brainwashed into believing they have to play that way to compete).

Not the whole time. Towards the end of Fleming's career, that was happening. But his best teams were kids from the neighborhood.

Kids from all over the state knew the names like the Fleming brothers, Dave Esterkamp, Bobby Kelly, Craig Conley, etc. They could play and none of those teams played the brutal style of "basketball" they utilize now. They actually had talent.

Clinton-Massie down to 6 candidates. Each candidate will get the chance to run a 10-15 minute drill with players in front of the 7 person committee. Players will get the chance to vote on which candidate they like the best. They did the same type of interview for the girls position. #golow

1. Some coach from Kentucky that won 18 games last season. Don’t know the name.
2. Dustin Eads
3. Jordan Berlin
4. Chad Fields
5. Steve Gerber
6. Logan Spriggs

Can we please not have another entire thread taken over by stupid GCLS hate. Let's keep this thread on the job searches.

This is the dumbest idea for an interview I've ever heard.

So talk about the search....
I did - I said they need to get back to a coach and administration that doesn't feel the necessity to play GCL ball. Literally had multiple posts about that and who I thought would be good there.

Sometimes threads evolve into slightly different but related things, it's normal.

A veteran coach would decline the interview on the phone call

6 interviews sounds like a lot, did only 6 apply?
