Curious about the thoughts on the match between Mendes and Nagao. Nagao wiped out the early 4-0 lead by Mendes, then wiped out the riding time point by keeping him down with both "boots in" and attempting to turn him with a half nelson that looked to be meant for nothing more than stalling and inflicting as much "torture" as possible. He could not possibly turn him in that position. Why is this never called as a stalemate or stalling on top - or even potentially dangerous? He knows he can't turn him in that position, and is more likely to cause injury - yet it is allowed to be continued for nearly an entire period. And he keeps cranking away on the shoulder with the arm extended straight out without ever coming close to getting a swipe. Mendes couldn't even turn over if he wanted to. Seems the ref was willing to let that continue on the OSU coaching staff hadn't thrown the brick claiming there was a full nelson. Once they did that, the ref waited a couple of seconds and I believe (not certain) that he called a stalemate.
Let the fireworks begin. I know if Mendes was in the reverse position, I would be saying it was all fine and good because of - partiality. Molinaro used to do this all the time and I thought he was just stupid for not realizing he couldn't turn the guy in that position. But it was never meant to turn the guy for points. It is pretty much impossible to get out from under that - and the refs seem to just let it go on until the end of the period. Why?
