2022 Cleveland Browns Thread

The Deshaun Watch continues. I don’t think the NFL expected this when they agreed to having the retired judge as mediator. This is dragging on forever. I wouldn’t be surprised if the NFL and NFLPA agree to ditch the judge method in their next agreement.
How can a one-person arbiter be stuck in gridlock? Does she have multiple personalities? Just make a decision and lets go.

Judges often take weeks or months to release rulings. Everyone knew that going in. They agreed to it last year and again, the next collective bargaining agreement will be 2030. The only people that truly care how long thins drags out is the Browns organization and their fans. All because their ownership made a dumb decision in signing him.

If he’s still on the Texans you wouldn’t care.

This is becoming a farce.

The NFL's problem is making a decision before all the civil cases are done. Unless it is a unlimited ban, they run the risk of getting crucified for being too lenient if the civil case turn out to be PR disaster.
Which is why the NFL should abide by the judge's ruling. That way, they can pass the buck if they face criticism either way.

Love the conflicting headlines.

Associated Press:

Deshaun Watson gets muted reaction at Browns' open practice

The there's this, as America expresses its "outrage" over Watson and his immorality. From Sports Illustrated:

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is one of the most bought jerseys in the league.

The last one should tell the NFL something. Perhaps they overreacted to the Watson situation.

.. or it's the American fascination with the " bad guys." We don't really know what really happened; it's all speculation at this point, although the NFL believes they must cover their butt in the court of public opinion. They have not been seen in the best light in recent years.

Exactly, I have Billy The Kid's autograph

The NFLPA issued a press release stating neither it nor Watson will appeal whatever decision comes down and is encouraging the league to do the same. Sounds like they know it's good news.

From an agent: NFL is probably waiting to see how this plays out in the public and if there is a bigger blow back than expected look for them to appeal. Print media lead by some of the more aggressive SI writers will start piling on with already one line of attack being the full season Calvin Ridley suspension for gambling on the NFL. Also look to see how big the fine is, must not be much as that was going to be an issue for the Union.

To be continued...

Browns are one year removed from being preseason Super Bowl champions.

Now they are the most hated franchise in the NFL.

No additional fine is what's being reported.

Of course the loudest blowback will happen right away. It would be foolish for the NFL to base any decision on reaction from the loudest of the loud. Did they lose fans, tv money, ad money, popularity after Ray Rice? No. The NFL would look bad throwing away the ruling of a female federal judge who seriously deliberated on this to a degree the NFL did not expect. Is the league going to ignore Judge Robinson in her very first case?

Who cares if they are hated in the short term? Time tends to heal wounds, especially superficial wounds. If Watson comes back with a strong career, matures as a person, wins a ton of games then he will likely be celebrated by many as an example of someone turning their life around. Some will always loathe him, but the majority typically allow for a person to overcome their past demons. Only time will tell.

Roger needs to let it lest the NFL hurts the credibility of the process it developed.
They are reviewing the judge’s 15 page ruling and explanation and she is presenting a very detailed summary of her decision. It would be foolish of the NFL to go their own way with this. Let the judge take all the heat.
