2022 Cleveland Browns Thread

Will the NFL be pressured by doing what's "politically correct," in response to the threats of retaliation by the involved organizations?!

Then the NFLPA will sue and it will be in court for a final disposition!

Of course the loudest blowback will happen right away. It would be foolish for the NFL to base any decision on reaction from the loudest of the loud. Did they lose fans, tv money, ad money, popularity after Ray Rice? No. The NFL would look bad throwing away the ruling of a female federal judge who seriously deliberated on this to a degree the NFL did not expect. Is the league going to ignore Judge Robinson in her very first case?
NFL is waiting to see what the harpies on The View have to say.

And Deshaun then plays in week one.

And so they start, SI Connor Orr's title for a column that has probably been teed up and ready to run since this thing started:

Deshaun Watson Suspension Cements Roger Goodell’s Legacy

The NFL commissioner has made his mark generating billions of dollars for owners and players, but he has failed when confronted with standing up for women.
ESPN actually had pretty balanced coverage, even somewhat tilted towards Watson.

The NFL Network, as expected, totally came down on the side of Watson being a monster and six games is too light and they all hope the NFL drops the hammer on Watson, etc.

First NY Times column on it was fairly balanced, they did drop in that the NFL was trying to get more females fans and this may not be the best way to do it. Expect an op ed in the coming days decrying the NFL as misogynistic with this ruling being business as usual.

By the way not being fined is a huge win for the Union. Not as much for Watson because he obviously has the $s to handle a big fine but for future rank and file guys that are not as well off financially.

I'm sure the character of the victims was thoroughly vetted, by the prosecutor, when this case went to the grand jury and they are legitimate therapists, since no case for any type of solicitation crime was upheld?!

The one therapist holding out, I'm sure will have a lawyer that will drag this through the mud and fire everything up again, when it goes to trial!

Listen, most women that are into the NFL are into it because guys are into it and they like guys. Most feminists and most of the gay female crowd are never going to be interested in the NFL no matter what. The Watson thing isn’t going to stop the league from growing a female audience. And woke be darned, advertisers and networks are not going to abort the NFL. The money will trump all, no pun intended.

She will settle as soon as she hears her price met.

Those are the most vocal about the " leniency" of the suspension will not be happy with anything short of indefinite suspension.

Who cares if they are hated in the short term? Time tends to heal wounds, especially superficial wounds. If Watson comes back with a strong career, matures as a person, wins a ton of games then he will likely be celebrated by many as an example of someone turning their life around. Some will always loathe him, but the majority typically allow for a person to overcome their past demons. Only time will tell.
Is this how Ben Rothlesburger is viewed by people outside Cincinnati? I don’t know anyone who views him in that light.

They are reviewing the judge’s 15 page ruling and explanation and she is presenting a very detailed summary of her decision. It would be foolish of the NFL to go their own way with this. Let the judge take all the heat.
Agreed. The biggest thing is the lack of concrete proof. With guys like Ray Rice, Hopkins, Ridley, etc. there was concrete proof. The NFL is pretty sure Watson violated the player conduct policies, but there is no real concrete proof.

Ben is just an aszhole and has the rep just about everywhere he's ever been, Findlay, Miami, Pittsburgh, everywhere. What's Watson's general personality like? He could be a nice guy with a weird happy ending fetish. Could also be a complete sociopath.

Not to mention, Ben is the direct benefitee (benefittor?) to two of the worst moments in Bengals modern history so he is especially hated by Bengals fans. So harder for me to get a grasp on how he’s viewed.

Browns are one year removed from being preseason Super Bowl champions.

Now they are the most hated franchise in the NFL.

Why should the Browns be hated in this situation? If any team should be hated it's the Texans, who facilitated his behavior. But, they aren't getting anything.

BTW, here is a link for the entire decision:

Although the national talking heads are pretty much unanimous in their disdain for the ruling, some even offering a nasty evaluation of Judge Robinson: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl...-six-game-suspension/lwzg4dn5vj7uisdvl7uwljww

This exchange seems to be more level-headed:

NFL Sentences Deshaun Watson To 3 Seasons Of Playing For The Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND, OH — After months of deliberation over allegations of sexual harassment and assault, the NFL came down hard on Deshaun Watson today by sentencing him to three whole seasons of playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Though recognizing the rare severity of the judgment, commissioner Roger Goodell stood firm by the league's decision. "Heinous crimes deserve equally brutal penalties," said Goodell. "This is no wimpy one-season suspension like we hand out for gambling or wife-beating. No sir, for maximum psychological torture we are first doling out a six-game suspension, so Deshaun will have to sit and watch the absolute beatings he will soon endure. And then, once he has lost all hope, Watson will be declared starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Godspeed!"
A crushed Watson reportedly sank to his knees in disbelief as he heard his punishment read aloud. "There goes my career - and any chance of making it out of this league with half a brain still intact," said Watson. "Three seasons of getting pummeled by vicious 350-pound maniacs, plus the ignominy of being doomed to failure. Being the quarterback in Cleveland is like the modern version of getting put in stocks and whipped before execution! This is my nightmare."
"Might as well just put Deshaun in the grave," said Watson's agent, Rick Benjamin. "Even if my client had done everything he's been accused of, I'm pretty sure this qualifies as cruel and unusual."
At publishing time, Watson's agent had reportedly tried to cheer his client up by booking him a massage.

Michael Simmons' doctor tells him he's obese and needs to lose some weight - but the patient has the perfect comeback: he's pregnant!

”Throughout this process, Deshaun and his representatives have abided by the newly created and agreed upon process for the NFLPA and the NFL to defer to the objective Judge Sue L. Robinson to comprehensively review all information and make a fair decision," the Haslam's said. "We respect Judge Robinson's decision, and at the same time, empathize and understand that there have been many individuals triggered throughout this process. We know Deshaun is remorseful that this situation has caused much heartache to many and he will continue the work needed to show who he is on and off the field, and we will continue to support him."

Someone should also tell the Haslam’s to shut up.

With the universal public outcry, mostly from tv talking heads and columnists, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Goodell added four games to the suspension to try to stem the PR dilemma the decision has caused the NFL.

One amusing/ironic aspect of the decision is that this process was essentially a response to the ineptitude of the NFL in dealing with disciplinary. Robinson then used the results of that inept process as precedent to come up with the 6 game ban.
