2011-12 Swim Predictions

We have three lanes at a local YMCA and still manage to have specialized workouts and just because they have a decent 50 and 100 time does not make them a good sprinter the same goes for a sprinter that can do a good 200 that doesnt make him a good mid distance swimmer. My coach who happens to be my dad has trained with gary hall and also has travled across the glob to learn the best way to train swimmers and only 10% of the coaches in the world are training there swimmers correctly most coaches are old school even at the college level there are only 3 schools that really know how to train a swimmer with out just through a bunch of yards at the i know both of the state champions from d1 and d2 in the 50 and the 100. I do half as many yards as those school do and go twice as fast its because i train smart its not about how many yard you do its about how you use those yards half of my workouts are technique and we cylce from arobic training for 2 months then into anarobic and lactate training then into sprint and lactate that is cycling and three of our water sessions are straight legs and i dont just mean kicking yards im talking 37 pound cinder block carries for a 25 and then with the cinder block doing squat jumps back and starting from the 12foot deep end and weighted dolphin kicks from the bottom of the pool and vertical kicks with 15 pound med balls and parechute training. we use rangs that rap aropund your arms to create lactat and when you take it off it produces a growth hormon and kelps build your muscles while helpping them adjust to lactate levels. see we do half the yards of these so called "great schools" but when we get out of the pool we cant move our arms thats the way to train unless your a distance swimmer witch we do not really have in highschool the 500 is not considered a distcance event in college and they train very similair to the sprinters. I know more about swimming and training then most coaches do I swim smart. You can look at the NCAA at the d1 level and see swimmers that swim with horrible technique but go so fast. just because you have fast swimmers on your team and have a lot of them and a ton of fillers doesnt make you a good coach yard will only get you so far and even if you work on technique its sothing that has to be done every day and and most people do not do it correctly. There is a reason that our little Lima town school is has the fastest 200free relay in the state by over a second and what will be the fastest 400free relay once we all swim on it together. st. fran and st.x and UA and everyone else may have put out good swimmers but look at where they are in the swimming world now thats what matters. and OSU does not have a good program ive talked with quite a few swimmers there that do not like the coaching system and they have all the right the biggest reason osu is even decent is because they are recruiting every kid and his mother out of ohio.

we use rangs that rap aropund your arms to create lactat and when you take it off it produces a growth hormon and kelps build your muscles while helpping them adjust to lactate levels.

This arm rap practice mentioned before was experimented with 10 years ago and I will tell you that you need to talk to a medical doctor about restraining the blood flow in your arms before continuing this practice. This could lead to a stroke, seriously you need to stop that experiment.

wow...to debunk some of your myths about ohio swimming and swimmers:
austin staab-world record holder (100y fly), ncaa champ-swam at wac (yardage based program) and stanford
david mosko-ncaa finalist (2 fly/mile)-swam at marlins (yardage) and stanford
kate mcneilis-sr. nat. finalist-swam at wac and tennessee
kyle mcneilis-sr. nat. semi finalist swam at wac and texas
margo geer-ncaa finalist/sr nat finalist-swam at springfield y and arizona
grace finnegan-ncaa relay swimmer at gcsto and arizona

there are many ways to skin a cat, you are clearly training hard and successfully, as are many others across ohio and the nation in different systems, best of luck to you and all in the coming months

No i just look at the results and many of the st. x and st, frans boys went there fastest times at districts and maybe went a few tenths faster at the state meet but many went slower they did good and placed high but didnt get much faster and I think this is because there district meet is so competitive so they have to rest for it and they taper more for the district mee and not for the state meet but i could be wrong and I just talk to swimmers that are on these teams or that have been on these teams and I know that some teams used to actually plan there line up based off the fact that those schools would be adding some time but this was a few years ago.

The rangs are not dangerous when used properly it's used to produce lactate not to restrict blood flow and is now being used by several USA Olympians so I'm pretty sure Gary would give me any workouts that would kill me. And also look where those swimmers went to college? Margo went to Arizona and that's one of the best sprint colleges in the country and that's when she became great and they train like I do and so does gracy and Austin was a freak like phelps those guys can do things that no one else can. He didn't do those kind of yards in college either and of course a 200fly and a mile swimmer will do yards I didn't say yards were bad for everyone and you should never do yards I do yardage to build up and aerobic base I was saying that the world of swimming is changing and just high yardage is not going to cut it soon.

The more I read this post, the more I shake my head. I have a hard time believing that all these coaches that have been successful in their respective programs are doing it the wrong way.

What you are doing works for you, and clearly it is working well. But because it works for you, does not mean it will work for the next athlete. Different athletes respond differently to all methods of training. To be able to say that the other programs are not training their athletes the right way is a very brash, and otherwise offensive, statement to make.

I am not posting here to say that your methods are not the right or wrong ones, but rather, that other coaches of the programs that you're talking about are doing quite well. It is very disrespectful for you to say that 90% of swimming coaches aren't doing it right.

If we were doing so poorly, the 90% of us in the wrong that coach - how have we been so successful at it? Clearly there are good coaches at every level, and I would venture to say more than 10% of coaches out there. I do not coach swimming, but I have been coaching polo and other sports for over a decade - and in all fairness, there are some bad coaches out there that do not train their athletes correctly. But to make such bold blanket statements about the coaching community rubs me the wrong way.

Let your swimming do the talking.

If you feel the need to call out the coaching community, try coaching first. If you feel the need to continue to bash them, do so by beating them with the kids you have trained.

actually i have coached many kids in my community and I plan on coaching after my swimming is over. And just because you produce a fast swimmer doesnt mean that there is a better way to do it. Like I said yardage is good for some people but when it comes to training a sprinter there are two ways you can throw a bunch of yardage at them and then take it all away or you can swim smart and train the right way. The world of swimming is changing and the way that people train swimmers is changing considering the fact that I was talking about sprinters and not all forms of swimmers my statments are all true and there factual it is a fact that only 10% or so of the coaches in this world are training the smart way and many are affraid to change a great example is the univeristy of texas there head coach said that he knows there is a better way to train then just doing yardage but he is getting old and is scared to change because he doesnt think he can do it right and 4 professional swimmers left his team because they knew there was a better way train and texas has a lot of fast swimmers. Auburn and arizona are two examples of schools that train the new way and they have all kinds of swimmers although auburn is known for there sprinting they have some great 200 and 500 swimmers as well so my statments may be bolde but they are truthful and if you had met the coaches that I have met and talked to the the professionals that I have talked to and you would understand I know exactly what im talking about when it comes to the newest ways of training because im advised by the people that started it. I'm a smart swimmer and what i do doesnt just work for me it works for every olympian as well so theres a reason why they do what they do high yardage programs will always be around and they will produce fast swimmers i have no doubt in that but if theres a more efficent way why not give it a chance. youll see in about a deacde the feild of swimming is slowly changing.

Blood Flow Restriction

The rangs are not dangerous when used properly it's used to produce lactate not to restrict blood flow and is now being used by several USA Olympians so I'm pretty sure Gary would give me any workouts that would kill me.

Please, make sure that you are well informed of this practice and recognize the disclaimers and have discussed this thoroughly with your physician. You ARE actually restricting blood flow back to the heart that is causing pooling. Here is a link to a site to get more informed of the practice and the precautions.

Also read more from Yasuda on blood flow restriction (BFR) "However, the effect of multijoint BFR training on both blood flow restricted limb and non-restricted trunk muscles remain poorly understood."

Regardless of who tells you what or gives you something, be responsible for your own body and what goes in it and on it.

On the coaching subject, your new coaching philosophy is not that new, it is just a different approach. Go read what Dave Salo's (@Sprintsalo) has been coaching for many years.

Erik the Fly have you heard of a period? Or do you always talk in one breath? Maybe that's part of that new training that everyone else is scared to do, but for us mere mortals, the semblance of proper punctuation is appreciated.

I don't know how you can accuse the schools you mention of using fast suits in season. In my experience, it has been noteworthy that they never use them until the taper (University being the exception and that has been noted earlier). You are not just making sweeping generalizations, but generalizations that are completely wrong.

Perhaps you have heard of the Southwest District. It's one of the most competitive districts in America. Only the very top swimmers can get away with delaying their taper until the state meet. Every coach will err on the side of tapering for districts over state if the decision is unclear. Every spot at state has to be earned, and it's stupid to try to save the taper and then not even make it to the state meet. With teams like St. Francis, they also want to take advantage of the few automatic qualifying spots available in their district. And sometimes, a swimmer who didn't seem destined for the state meet has a fantastic taper and breaks into the top 24. When these kind of swims happen, the swimmers who were once projected into state now find themselves on the outside looking in. Any team that wants to make a legitimate run at the state title cannot afford to leave any swimmers at home. A state quality swimmer can hold on to a taper for a week anyway.

We will surely see how effective your space age training is as the season plays out. Maybe you will be revolutionizing the sport in 20 years as America's premier swim coach. When you write your book, do the literate public a favor and use periods. Maybe when you're not trying to induce a stroke in training, you can hit some Hooked on Phonics.

I think most people would agree that Yappi is a completely ridiculous website. Over the past two years, the swimming and diving thread has been relatively dead, and I'm not going to lie, I was happy to see ErikTheFly bring back some of the ridiculousness that makes us love Yappi. I, however, am two years older and two years wiser, so I think its time to impart some wisdom.

As I've said, Yappi is stupid. About two years ago, it reached a golden age in the swimming and diving forum; kids who cared way too much would get way too upset whenever somebody dissed their team. Me and my good friend HurricaneIke each picked a school to support and a school to diss. Through our harassments, we essentially killed the swimming and diving forum, an accomplishment I am most proud of to this very day.

ErikTheFly, I understand your overall lack of intelligence makes you feel pretty good about indulging in a forum where you can reinforce the fact that you're very good at swimming. But come on man, if you want to be the best, you have to act like the best. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady don't go online to talk about how good they are at quarterbacking in the NFL. Lebron James has never been on an NBA forum saying, "Hey, I just wanted say I actually am Lebron James and yes, I'm very good at basketball." Even Rain Man didn't brag about his math skills. So come on man, get off of yappi. If you're truly good, you should be above a site like this. Because sooner or later, a couple of trolls are just going to come onto the forum and try to piss you off. Its a cycle that will be impossible to avoid.

I understand you liking your ego stroked though, so let me go ahead. Based on what I see in this forum, you appear to be very, very, very good at swimming. Congratulation.

Sincerely,
Uncoordinated, the ruiner of the swim and dive forum of yappi back in 08 09.

P.S. I was directly responsible for the sticky thread at the top saying play nice boys or else.

I, too, took part in the epic posting of the 2008-2009 season that led to the aforementioned sticky. It will last forever as a testament to the inanity, stupidity, and foolishness that characterized that year on yappi. It would be a mistake to revive that time Mr. Erik the Fly.

ErikTheFly I have learned that you are attempting to reopen the chaos that is provided by an aggravated Yappi. I must strongly urge you to go back from whence you came, never to return.

No one man should have all this power. Yappi at its height of insults, derision, scorn, and general pettiness is not something that needs to be revisited. Allow the interested few to discourse over meet results and exchange stories of swimmers' careers in college.

If you attempt to undo this balance, I must warn you that the guardians of the peace will be called to defend this balance. Do not test the guardians. Go back to your pool, your psychologist, your gary hall, and do not look back. There is nothing but desolation here for you.

There is no need to use grammar on a website that means nothing. And i dont come on here to defend a team or to talk about how fast I am I could care less about that. I hate the simmple fact that people come on here and talk about things that they no nothing about. I know exactly what I do with my training because my dad is my coach and my olympic coach that over sees everything that I do is one of the best coaches on this planet. Your are right why should i sit here and argue with people it makes no sense to even get upset about yet I do. Oh well.

what are the predictions for the Southwest Classic results? the biggest high school swim meet in the nation

I was just looking up that meet and boy is it a big meet I have never seen a high school meet that big I am going to the northeast classic this weekend and I though it was a big meet. But is the southest classic an invite only meet? or can any team join? I think it is hard to say what the swimmers will go there are some very fast swimmers there but most of them haven't made any improvements on there main events since earlier in the season but at a big meet like that with great competition it's hard to say what will happen.

The Southwest Classic is open only to teams in the Southwest District. It is the largest high school meet in the country. Given its size it's understandable that they have never allowed teams or swimmers from outside the Southwest to participate. The Classic is another example of how (and why) the Southwest District dominates high school swimming in Ohio.

Excuse my ignorance...what are you guys talking about?

On the home screen, on the date range of the displayed threads, select From the Beginning. Then find threads in the years 2008-09. The main ones in the brouhaha were St. Xavier Swimming and Diving 2009, Southwest Classic, GCL 2009, something like Back to the Southwest District, and Road to State. Really just find any posts from xswimmer100 and then follow it from there. He was quite the catalyst. A lot of the charged posts were removed. And I know some of my posts got some censoring, but you should be able to find the gist. That's what led to the sticky at the top of the forum.

NE Classic

Some teams are not traveling to the NE classic this year and it is getting smaller every year. I know one team in now limited to doing meets within 50 mile radius of their school due to budget cuts. The only exceptions are tournament meets.

This used to be a great meet to get kids ready to swim in the Canton pool. As you know that pool is not the fastest pool in Ohio and has some quirks that are not well liked but we are married to it again for the next eight years. It does have the most spectator capacity.

Sam Decker is not swimming at the NE Classic this weekend he is entered in the Pickerington Central Invitational.

Our school was one of those schools that had the 50mile radius limitation but we were able to pay the difference or drive up with our parents. And we are going to the NE classic I would of liked to swim at the SW classic but we couldn't get in. I think it will be very nice to swim at Canton before the state meet.

also keep in mind the christmas invitational at canton back in december it was a huge meet with a nearly 6 hour prelim session, they also bring 3 heats back as opposed to 2
