Solon opened up the 2010 season on Friday night with a resounding 12-7 win over Kent Roosevelt. Chris Humphrey got the first goal of the season in the 1st quarter, and followed with three more. Freshman drew Barksdale had a great debut folks, he scored three goals. His older brother Tres had two scores, as did Matt DiCarro.

I hope to make my return to Solon Lacrosse tomorrow night at Solon as Solon hosts North Canton Hoover @ 7:30 pm. Hope they have rosters to hand out. And maybe some hot chocolate.

On a brisk 40 degree night in Stewart @ Solon, freshman Drew Barksdale got the first Comet goal vs. North Canton Hoover, YOWZA!!! The only problem was Hoover got the next 8! 8-1 @ the half. SHEEZ! Looked like the boys in blue and white were on Spring Break alright. Something told me that NCH was pretty darn good, fast feet, good sticks, and a seven goal lead.

Second half came and Solon woke up. They scored 5 goals to Hoover's 1, and it was 9-5 and then 9-6, 9-7, 9-8. Yowza!! The tale of two halves, for sure. Another goal by Hoover made it 10-8, then Mike Perrino scored off another Humphrey assist and it was 10-9. 42 seconds left.

The Comets had two shots that came close but no score, time ran out. A valiant comeback just fell short.

The Barksdales, Drew and Tres, each had two goals, Matt DiCarro had two also, and two assists,. And so did Chris Humphrey have two scores, along with three assists, and Perrino had the other goal for Solon as stated.

No roster for Hoover so I can't post there individual stats, but their goalie had a lot of saves as did Solon's Keith Laporte.

My first Lacrosse game back in over a year, and at the half I thought I had jinxed our guys. But they had no quit in them tonight. I hope I can make it to Walsh Friday night, but the 95 yr.old mother-in-law awaits for dinner date.

Time will tell. Especially for this young Comet team. (Don't bet against them)

They were there tonight, but I wasn't, seems like another bout with shingles for your reporter. Solon had the lead at the half 6-4.( My correspondent Dick Humphrey keeping me informed by cell.) Chris H., Drew Barksdale and C.J. had goals, in the second half scoring Dick wasn't exactly keeping track but Chris had another, Sean Smith, and Matt DiCarro both had scores, and, Keith LePorte was stopping shots all night in the net.

FINAL SCORE at Walsh Jesuit tonight, Solon-13 Walsh Jesuit-7 YOWZA!!!

I was told Mike Perrino was injured in practice and is out for the rest of the season. That is really a big loss for the Comets, and they just have to overcome it, and step up as they did tonight. And for Mike it must be so difficult, as it 's a shock to be young and so talented, and then the competition you love is taken away for a period. That's where the resilience has to come in, and the mental growth and toughness increases. Good luck Mike.

O.k. I talked to Linda @ athletic office, they are playing @ Hudson football stadium tonight @ 7:00. Go Comets!

Geez, that darn Hudson freaking field; it looks like another serious injury to a Solon star. This time Matt DiCarro after scoring two goals went down with what looked like a knee injury. He was helped on to a golf cart and taken off. Have to hope for the best, but the Comets already lost Mike Perrino last week with a broken leg, he was there on crutches with his leg in a cast.

Solon started off with a 3-1 lead, Hudson came back to score 2 goals, it was 3-2 at the end of 1st qtr., Solon. The Explorers scored three in the 2nd to Comet's 1, and at the half it was 5-4 Hudson. Comet's scores by DiCarro (2), Barksdale, and Humphrey. Cicelli, Jones, and Lynott were scoring for Hudson.

Hudson came out in the second half and scored 5 goals to Solon's one, 10-5 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, both teams scored three, Final score Hudson- 13 Solon-8. It seemed that the Comets blew too many scoring opportunitys on this night. Some fine assists did not get in the net for goals.

Some really weird calls by the officials also tonight, but,....

You cannot take it away from the Explorers though, they were quick and aggressive on the attack tonight. Truly enjoyed meeting the Medina coach and talking to him. I got some good insight just listening to the man.

If my scoring was correct, Trey Barksdale got 5 goals, DiCarro two, and Chris H. one. Tuesday the 20th, Comets travel to St. Edwards.

Yeehah! Solon goes into St. Edwards and takes home a victory, 12-8. 8-3 at the half. Sean Smith, the Barksdales, Heffernan, Humphrey, (3) Polley all scored. From what I was told a pretty rough game and some hits just overlooked. Anyone remember the 2000 playoff game @ Solon between the Eagles and the Comets? Nuff said. GO COMETS!

Solon @ Shaker Heights, my Alma Mater, 5:00 P.M. Friday.

( thanks to Richard H. for the scores and scoring)

Solon traveled to Shaker Heights Friday and the Comets didn't have too much trouble in winning 10-1. But this freaking injury jinx won't stop, as two more Solon stickmen went down, Terry Tsivitse with a shoulder injury, and CJ Hanna I was told was hurt also.

All these injurys to starters led Solon to be very shorthanded versus University School Saturday. From what I heard Solon led US at the half 4-3, but the home team came back in the second half and won 12-6, in a match-up that was much closer than the score indicates. Chris Humphrey led the Comet scoring with 4 goals.

Green comes to Solon Tuesday evening, gametime 7:30 P.M.

All these injurys make one think of next season, with the Comets gaining more kids with more experience due to this years mis-fortune. Looking for the positive, that's all. We still have quite a bit of 2010 to shine.

Half-way

Thanks for the News, Hurricane. That's too bad about the injuries because the season has half to go.

At the midpoint of the season, here is how the OHSLA Local Playoff Rating looks for the Comets:

Solon's Power Rating is #19

Strength of schedule is #15

Solon is ranked #33 in goals scored and #33 in goals allowed

I guess you could say based on how they score and their defense, they are doing well to be ranked #19.

On the telecast of the NFL Draft, I saw Jim Brown with his cane come out to announce one of the Brown's picks. The announcers then mentioned about what a great football player he was, and, that he "was the greatest lacrosse player". I didn't know he was the greatest, but he was responsible for my first interest in the sport those many years ago. I thought that Ernie Davis played lacrosse at Syracuse too. I was at the preseason football game when with the lights out in Municiple Stadium, and a big spotlight on the infield, the Brown's introduced their rookie, Ernie Davis in his street clothes. He never played in a game and was dead about a year later.

Yep. I was there also. Actually a great moment for a gigantic Municipal Stadium Browns crowd, to give out the love for a young man many felt would maybe not ever play a game in the NFL. Tragic, and Ernie has never been forgotten.

Comets are now 5-3 after a 17-11 win over the Green Bulldogs. Nolan Polley and Drew Barksdale had the four-goal "cap-trick" :), Tuesday night at Solon.

Solon plays at Massillon Jackson Friday night. Go Comets!

On a really nice night out at Gilmour Academy, the shorthanded but game Solon Comets out lasted the homeys 13-11 in a wild and wooley fourth qtr, as the sky grew dark and foreboding. Well I guess all the severe weather stayed north by northwest, as I never got hit by a drop on the way home down #91. Just a lot of wind and distant thunder, as North Solon stays dry once more. As most know I'm obsessive about rainfall, or lack therof, so let's just get on with it.

Sitting with Dick Humphrey and Mike DiCarro, one can't help but learn about this fascinating sport. One I would have loved to have played, if it was around Shaker Heights in the '50's. Dick must have been a bit proud as son Chris scored seven goals. But still, the play was ragged just too much of the match, and Mike pointed out to me all the injured starters congregated on the north side of the bench, son Matt DiCarro, Mike Perrino, Sean Smith,Terry Tsivitse, and goalie Keith LePorte. And that's not counting the boys whom are playing hurt like CJ Hanna who did reinjure his ankle in the second half. This just has been one of those seasons where the bug hit and has been more than enough already. As I was told, some of the Comet matchs this spring might have turned out differently with the six or more starters in there.

Solon ekes out the win 13-11 and it's some balm after the loss to Massillon Jackson. Mighty Medina comes in to Solon next Tuesday night, but first the Comets travel to Cleveland Heights to play the Tigers Saturday evening at 6:00 P.M.

Drew Barksdale had three goals tonight, and brother Tres had two. And Ryan Wurst had the other. Josh Low had the job of stopping Gilmours shots tonight and hung in there for sure, and it was good to be back for me also, "hanging in there myself", your reporter, reporting.

Hanging in there

Sorry to hear that the injured lacrosse players are having trouble healing. Same goes for the intrepid reporter who needs a run of good health luck in 2010. Next week I'm getting my high school/football/baseball knee that hurt for 55 years fixed. Told the surgeon to throw it as far as he can.

As far as the team goes, the schedule doesn't allow for much upward movement in the State Power Ratings. Currently at #22, the Comets have only one game with a higher ranked team and that's #3 Medina (top offensive team). A win against Cleve. Hts (#60) won't help much but wins against Hawken and Chagrin Falls (#30 & #26), while both ranked lower, could put the team in the top 20. That would be a good goal! Good Luck guys!!

Surprised to read that lacrosse was not played at Shaker 55 years ago. Thought they & Lakewood had programs like the private academies. It would not have swayed me from baseball; too much love of the nation's passtime in our family.

Well I don't remember it but I was baseball all the way myself. Thanks for the lacrosse standings updates. Solon's baseball team and track teams are having great seasons Gramps. The lacrosse team just might come together later this year and surprise fans. But next year, look out! There is another Barksdale coming up. He is in 7th grade and you know the old story, they are calling this young Barksdale the best of the three. Somethings never change on expectations, right? Wonder if there is another in the oven? :)

(Uh-oh) Anyway, Tres and Drew are really something. Split receivers this upcoming season maybe? Brothers sprinting downfield on the gridiron for the Comets? Can you imagine. And another Solon lacrosse star, Chris Humphrey throwing the pigskin to them. WOWEE!

Solon beat Cleveland Heights, 15-6 Sat.afternoon in some rough weather. Comets played many kids including some jayvees I heard. Starters got some well-earned rest. And at a good time, highly ranked Medina comes in to Solon Tuesday night 2 7:30 P.M. Early weather forecast, possible heavy rain, wind, and stormy around the nets.

Hmm, more rough weather Tuesday night, as Solon hosted #2 Medina. It was actually pouring rain at my house in north Solon, but it didn't last long. Worse was the wind. But lightening hit at Stewart, and stopped the Solon- Medina match. In the 4rth quarter it was finally halted. And called. 14-5 Bees. Alex Heffernan scored the 1st goal for the Comets, star midfielder Chris Humphrey scored two, and Josh Low started for the injured Keith LePorte in goal and had 11 saves, against one of the top teams in Ohio.

Solon wraps up regular season @ Hawken, Saturday, the 15th. And hosts Chagrin Falls Tuesday night.

Then postseason. Question is will Solon have some starters back from injurys?

Well I called a parent of one of the Solon starters just to check on the status of the match since it's raining cats and dogs here, and thunder is constant. He called me back and told me starting time was changed to 12:00 P.M. The Solon Athletic website had 3:00 P.M. start time vs. winner of Clev Hts.-Kent Roosevelt. Anyway, score now in the 4rth quarter is 14-8 Solon, and the game has gotten rough, and I was told Chris Humphrey was thrown out for talking back to the official, AFTER Roosevelt has hit Comets from behind, and done the stick jabs to the groin, etc. Well, I'm not there, but my informant is definitely credible, I've been told before of Kent's dirty play at times, but the problem now is Humphrey will be ineligible for the next playoff match. :wallbang: Coach will probably argue this with the commish. What a season!

Solon vs. Chagrin Falls last week was a Comet win but I just remember that Solon won handily. I don't know the school Solon will play next, nor the site.
I'll be much more careful of the announcement of it. GO COMETS!

Well the outcome of the semi-finals match vs. Kent Roosevelt posted on Solon Athletics web was 14-11 final, Solon kind of coasted after a 10-4 half-time lead. Goals scored included four by Chris Humphrey, and four also by Tres Barksdale, and three by Drew Barksdale. Defensive gems played both by Alex Heffernan, and an outstanding performance by Chris Dowdy defending Kent's top scorer. Also, Keith LePorte had winning performance in the nets.

Solon Comets travel to Medina Wednesday night at 7:30 to take on the #2 ranked team in Ohio.

Come on out and support your Comets! GO SOLON!

Chris Humphrey IS suspended and cannot play tonight @ Medina due to being thrown out vs. Kent Roosevelt. I kind of wish we were playing Kent in football next fall. Oh well, now if Solon upsets Medina tonight, it will go down as one of the biggest upsets in Div.1 lacrosse history.

GO COMETS!!!!!

Well, I heard the Comets played Bees tough in the first half, then got bamboozeled by the stickwork and scoring ability of Medina. I did here Ryan Wurst suffered a broken leg, but today I was told his leg was a bruise. Hope so.

Medina will lose many of those great players with all that experience, as will other Solon opponents, next season is ours baby.

Congrats on a decent season Comets, especially considering all those injurys.

Thanks Hurri

Thanks Hurri for all the lacrosse updates throughout the season!!!

Now let's move on to the football quest!!

Go Comets!!
