Legalized Sports Betting Coming To Ohio

How come every time we legalize something and promise the great people of this state tax dollar windfalls they never come to fruition?

Lottery, Casinos, Horse Tracks, etc...

I'll continue using the neighborhood bookie thank you very much.
How’s your knee cap healing up? Oh, and tell Johnny two times I said fugit about it, fugit about it

Good to hear. Saw this in Pennsylvania a couple months ago. It will make sports seasons a little more interesting for the casual fan that didn't want or have access to a bookie.

Speaking to someone in Michigan, except to see plenty of ads during sports events for betting apps. Just like bookies they want volume and folks betting on either side, they make their $s on the vig.

I’ve got a system I want to test. I believe you can be successful in betting only on Mac games if you do the research. There’s usually a wide variance in talent from the top vs bottom, and instead of digging into the entire landscape of CF, you’re limiting yourself to only 12 teams.

Also, a lot of these games take place mid week and there’s not much betting action. And for those who do bet on these games, it’s safe to assume a good many aren’t doing the research and throwing down $ for the hell of it.

So in breaking this down you’ve got:

a small sample of teams
Games where the outcome is often highly predictable
a limited number of bettors

I’m sure there’s something I’m missing, but I think this could work

If I still lived in Ohio, this would not affect me in any way. I love to gamble, but only on myself. Team betting is just off the limits for me. Just look at what happened the last two NBA nights. Two monumental second half choke jobs, only thing to bet is which team had the biggest choke, Milwaukee or the 76ers.

Actually there are folks that specialize in betting off sports just for this reason. To bet on the NFL there are basically no max bets, bet on the WNBA and the max per wager is something very low comparatively speaking because of the relative low amount of total action means one large bet can move a line significantly. Also these teams are not as "cocooned" as much as the bigger sports and insider access is much easier thus folks can gain a serious edge. A guy I know who does a lot of sports gambling told me to watch these lines in the hours before a game, some of them go sideways very quickly and can make timing of the bet a nightmare.

Another tip I got was to avoid international sports, many of these places are more worried about keeping the govt in power than policing match fixing.

I was disappointed to see that it wouldn't be legal until April (I was hoping to bet NFL/college games in the Fall).

This is just the Senate passing it, next up is the House and there are a couple constituencies that are not too happy so there will be some serious lobbying coming up. Bar owners want machine placement at a higher level than currently allowed and the schools want the teaser $s that apps and casinos throw at gamblers to get them hooked not be allowed as a marketing write off against their profits. These will eventually be worked out and Dewine will sign off because the $s, while not as big as some think, will still be too good to pass up.

It’s only a matter of time until Hedge Funds start getting in on this. If you think about it, bets on games are really just short term options.

I bet every week during CFB season last year. My brother got me into using Draft Kings. Had never bet before but I never lost money on any given week, either broke even or made a small amount. I only bet about $30/week but it's not hard if you have the slightest bit of college football knowledge. Plus Draft Kings is always giving you free money with gimme bets.

MACtion doesn't draw the money the big weekend games do but they're always towards the tops when it comes to number of bets placed

Not a gambler but I would likely put some money down at the stadium if they had some kiosk thing to make a bit more interesting.

Gamblers always chase. When they lose big on college they put together a nice "package" on Sunday NFL to catch-up. If they lose there they play the MAC games early in the week even as Omar stated, they do not know about the teams they are betting. Gambler's code. They always chase and they only tell you when they win, never when they lose.

I was told that no matter who is playing Monday Night Football is usually the single biggest game played over a football weekend, guess why.

Not really the case with MACtion. It's that the media has fallen in love with the Tuesday-Wednesday format and the pure chaos that happens in them. Plus it's the only game in town.

I'd say it is about time with the other states doing it, but I am like Irish in that I'll believe the benefits to the state when I see them as we've been made promises before. I also wonder if it will cause more financial woes for the weak and easily addicted.

When Ohio promised big money with Casinos, under the guise that our money is leaving the state to go to MI, IN, KY I cringed.

Back in the day buddies and I would frequent Detroit's casinos right after they opened. Nice hotels and the clientele was not too bad. About two years after the fact it was a cesspool. Nothing but locals gambling away their paychecks. We left one time around 1AM and came back the next night around 9PM to find people still at tables dressed in the same clothes from the day before. They never left. Good friend owns a carpet business and has contracts with the Detroit casinos. They have to replace carpet all of the time because degenerate local gamblers $chit and pi$$ themselves at slot machines all the time because they fear the minute they get up the machine will hit.

When Toledo built their beautiful casino right next to I75 and not in downtown they did not even bother putting up a hotel. It is essentially a big box church or store with easy expressway access to poach from locals within a 50 miles radius. And to make matters worse one or two companies reap all of the benefits. Penn National Gaming is what happens when mobsters realize they can simply go legit and make more money without any fear of ever being arrested.

Because Ohio's casino rules are a joke. They aren't connected to nice hotels because the politicians said hotels would encourage gambling addiction. So they threw the actual casinos off key highways and let the racesinos deal with the rest. Nothing against harness racing but the crowds can be suspect. When you just offer slot machines and a buffet...your going to get that type of customer.

The incidents you described regarding the carpet do happen but should end with the customer being banned from the property and reported to the on-site state investigator. That doesn't always happen though.

Not sure what you're trying to establish with the Penn Gaming comment but it's a publicly traded company who just like many others, started as small casinos and racetracks. When the Supreme Court paved the way to legalize gambling three years ago they expanded their business model.

Did a little experiment a few months ago when my dad told me he spent about $250 a month on lottery tickets but thinks my gambling is outlandish. I started on 12/5/20 with $250 in my account and bet $10 a game. I knew I'd eventually lose it all but wanted to see how long it took. I ran out of money on 5/23/20. My final record was 309-316-15. That's a total of 640 sporting events I bet on.

That clearly demonstrates how lost and out of touch our politicians are. I'd think a gambling addiction is much easier satisfied by being able to do it anywhere on your phone. Hotels would have benefitted the casual traveling gambler and allowed the facilities to expand as entertaining venues.

Maybe we shouldn't have hotels near bars or convenience stores that sell cigarettes.

I agree. In terms of addiction, you see it in sports gambling but not nearly as much (for now). They can't get the action they can from slot machines. I'm waiting 2 hours for a result where slot machines are every 5-10 seconds. Anyone who wants to gamble from their phone in Ohio can without much effort already. It's just offshore companies that benefit. I'm not a fan of mobile table games/slots but not sure if Ohio plans to allow that anyways.

Back in like 2013 or 2014 when DFS on college sports was legal in Ohio I had more success playing the weekday MAC slates than any other sport, mainly just by reading MAC message boards (which I was already doing) and staying updated on injuries

Do the research, I’ll follow your bets and Venmo you 20% of my profits. See you in the fall.
