Ursuline, East Liverpool and Poland top Mahoning Matters’ boys basketball rankings / JANUARY 31, 2024

1) URSULINE The Youngstown Ursuline Irish have jumped back to No. 1 in the Mahoning Matters Super 7 boys’ basketball poll. The Ursuline Irish are 11-2 on the season and recorded a 63-53 win over the Youngstown East Golden Bears in their most recent game. Ursuline has won five straight games and hasn’t lost a game in January.
2) EAST LIVERPOOL East Liverpool is No. 2 and is 12-3 on the campaign, splitting its two games last week. The Potters defeated rival Beaver Local 71-62 but fell to the Wheeling Park Patriots, 58-54. Two of the Potters’ three losses this season have occurred against out-of-state opponents.
3) POLAND The Poland Bulldogs (12-3) rise from No. 4 to No. 3 in this week’s rankings. The Bulldogs, who lead the Northeast 8, have rattled off five straight wins, including a 47-26 win over the Lakeview Bulldogs last Friday night.
4) WARREN JFK Warren JFK fell from No. 1 to No. 4 in the poll after back-to-back setbacks last week to Canton Central Catholic and Mogadore. The Eagles still have one of the most impressive wins of the season when they defeated Akron Hoban earlier in the season.
5) AUSTINTOWN FITCH Austintown Fitch had a big week to remain at No. 5 in the poll. The Falcons (9-5) recorded a pair of impressive All-American Conference wins last week over Canfield (51-46) and arch-rival Boardman (61-26).
6) LISBON The Lisbon Blue Devils are enjoying an outstanding season and are at No. 6. Lisbon is 13-2 on the campaign and leads the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a perfect 10-0 record. The Blue Devils have won five games in a row.
7) LABRAE LaBrae stays at No. 7 in this week’s poll after splitting its two contests last week. The Vikings, who are 12-2, dropped a 64-56 decision to the Newton Falls Tigers but rebounded with a 68-51 triumph over the Champion Golden Flashes last weekend.

Mooney should be #2 in this poll. I can't see either LaBrae or Lisbon beating the Cards. Plus Mooney manhandled E Liverpool. Ursuline at Mooney on Feb 9 has the makings of an upset. JFK has really been up and down recently. Fitch just lost to Howland. Canfield toppled Poland. South Range ought to make this list.

Yes, their poll has been somewhat inconsistent and head-scratching at times this season, but at least they're trying. They did not publish a poll last week for some reason.
I question why schools like East Liverpool and Lisbon are considered part of the "Mahoning Valley"; but again, it's their poll, so whatever 🤷‍♂️ .
We'll see how things start to shake out in a few weeks.

Salem, 4-12 and winless in the EBC, puts Poland, 12-4 and 1st place in the NE8 on a running clock in the 4th and wins 69-39. Was Poland at full strength? Even if they weren’t, would that player(s) make a 30 point difference?

Does anyone know what happened?
