Ursuline, East Liverpool and Poland top Mahoning Matters’ boys basketball rankings / JANUARY 31, 2024

URSULINE The Youngstown Ursuline Irish have jumped back to No. 1 in the Mahoning Matters Super 7 boys’ basketball poll. The Ursuline Irish are 11-2 on the season and recorded a 63-53 win over the Youngstown East Golden Bears in their most recent game. Ursuline has won five straight games and hasn’t lost a game in January.

EAST LIVERPOOL East Liverpool is No. 2 and is 12-3 on the campaign, splitting its two games last week. The Potters defeated rival Beaver Local 71-62 but fell to the Wheeling Park Patriots, 58-54. Two of the Potters’ three losses this season have occurred against out-of-state opponents.

POLAND The Poland Bulldogs (12-3) rise from No. 4 to No. 3 in this week’s rankings. The Bulldogs, who lead the Northeast 8, have rattled off five straight wins, including a 47-26 win over the Lakeview Bulldogs last Friday night.

WARREN JFK Warren JFK fell from No. 1 to No. 4 in the poll after back-to-back setbacks last week to Canton Central Catholic and Mogadore. The Eagles still have one of the most impressive wins of the season when they defeated Akron Hoban earlier in the season.

AUSTINTOWN FITCH Austintown Fitch had a big week to remain at No. 5 in the poll. The Falcons (9-5) recorded a pair of impressive All-American Conference wins last week over Canfield (51-46) and arch-rival Boardman (61-26).

LISBON The Lisbon Blue Devils are enjoying an outstanding season and are at No. 6. Lisbon is 13-2 on the campaign and leads the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a perfect 10-0 record. The Blue Devils have won five games in a row.
7)
LABRAE LaBrae stays at No. 7 in this week’s poll after splitting its two contests last week. The Vikings, who are 12-2, dropped a 64-56 decision to the Newton Falls Tigers but rebounded with a 68-51 triumph over the Champion Golden Flashes last weekend.
