St. Xavier Football 2023

I think for six straight seasons StX has started multiple QBs during the regular season mainly due to injury. Herbstreit at some point is probably going to get banged up and it will be important for Vollmer to be ready. Having said that I would have to think Jack O'Malley is going to be in the mix as well. If I recall in 2020 StX had to go three deep on the QB depth chart game one and then again later in the season vs Elder. All of the QBs are likely to get their opportunity, so it will come down as to who is ready.

At the 7 on 7 it looked like O'Malley was playing safety.
I would bet Vollmer lines up at QB a half dozen or more times a game since he is a dual threat
That experience would also be valuable should Herbie get banged up

Where's Weber? Is he on D?

Will some of these past basketball guys go out for hoops with the coaching change (not trying to derail football thread, just curious if it brings some kids back)?

We don't discuss basketball on this thread.
It's forbidden

Weber is on D as well.
The safeties include Reeder, Weber, O'Malley, Bishop, Hall and many more

  5. Will O’Malley play WR or safety if he is not QB1 or QB2?
  6. Will Justin Kattus play DLine or LB?
  7. Will the RB position strictly be the 2 seniors (Napier and Patrick)?
1. Both are getting equal snaps at QB at this point
2. Both
3. Neither
4. Safety
5. Safety
6. Not sure yet
7. Yes

Reload, Thanks for the roster update on offense. What is the defense looking like thus far, roster-wise, or too early to tell ?
Also, with Klare and Sulfsted both listed as tight ends, I wonder if the coaching staff would toy with Klare on defense as an end or outside linebacker. With his 6'6" frame, long arms, agility, good hands, etc., I think he could be a menace rushing the passer or dropping into coverage. Your thoughts?

I heard Sulfsted and Hammond may be playing both sides....Hammond at RT/NG and Sulfsted at DE/TE
That's a tall order being in the trenches most of the game given X's schedule

Guessing Justin Kattus or Nate Brice at the other end position but there are a lot of good players vying for that spot
Not sure whether Justin Kattus will be up or down

I think Klare will be strictly offense.
A lot of Coverdale's offensive schemes utilize 2 TEs

The only certainty at LB is Noah Beck with a half dozen others battling it out for the other 2 spots

There's a ton of talented players in the secondary....

Can't wait for the Centerville scrimmage to see it play out.

ReLoad, What about the Wassler kid that will be a junior, does he play football too?

I thought you'd comment in the spring about Clifford and P. Johnson being drafted. I realize Johnson didn't stick around X for 4 years but still a heckuva accomplishment.

The older Wassler doesn’t play football anymore but I did hear that several of the football/basketball combo kids from last year might be done with basketball to concentrate on winter workouts.

Yesterdays 7 on 7 vs Oak Hills did not go well.
Oak Hills passing attack was impressive and the X pass defense abysmal.
And the X pass game sputtered while the Highlanders pass defense was solid.
Can't believe I just typed that.
But it's early and still a lot more player shuffling to occur

GO X!

And how many 7 on 7s can teams play?
X has played like 8 different teams now
I have never seen or read of a limit.

This year, summer period was rolled back from June 1 to May 15, and the number of coaching days increased from 10 to 13. The 7-on-7 football is included in the summer period. A coaching day counts when you are working with more than 50% of the team. Most lineman and specialist don’t participate in the 7-on-7.

So, it would depend on how many players X uses in these 7s—if X chooses to burn a coaching day.

Even if X did utilized a coaching day for all 7-on-7, they’d still be under the 13 days now. Assuming X has indeed played 8 teams in the 7-on-7.

I count 9 teams.
Oak Hills, Fairfield, Colerain, West Clermont, Mason, Lakota East, Centerville, LaSalle and Lima Senior.
Easily the most I can remember.
X looked fine up until yesterday.
They need to get all 11 out there in pads and full contact.
Centerville scrimmage at Ballaban in 9 days

Okay, but what do you think about the struggle of the Varsity?
I don't put any stock in the underwear Olympics. The other elements in football aren't there to really assess. With that being said Herbstreit and Vollmer looked good, but I think Herbstreit has a better command of the O. Sulfsted looks really good at TE. Napier is moving better than I heard he was. The receivers are decent, I didn't see any wow moments. But they weren't bad. On D yes there was some struggle, but this is mainly where the other elements of fb (pass rush) come into play. The OH QB had plenty of time for guys to work themselves open so he could hit his target which I don't think happens in a real game. The LBs will continue to be the heart and sole of the D. Folke is still going to be a menace on the field. They have Hall at corner, while I personally think he'd do better at safety (but I'm not the coach). Next week at their scrimmage will really let us know where they are.

Outside of Vollmer I don't know if the team has anyone that can take it to the house at any given point in the game. I also worry about the OL. One of the better OL candidates ended up playing Fall Rugby

Yeah they've lost a lot of guys to rugby and in general, however I think that's another conversation to be had around some of their past decisions and how they approach developing players.

Coverdale's favorite chess piece will rack up a lot of rushing yards on scrambles, jet sweeps, the wildcat and the option
Last season, Napier's longest run from scrimmage was only 31 yards and Patrick's was 19 yards.
Of the wide receivers I think Taylor may show some breakaway speed.

I think we saw in 2021 as good as that team was they didn't have too many guys that could take it to the house against the better teams. Coverdale likes hitting the big plays and you need speedsters to make that happen sometimes. Speed kills, especially in high school. Just think this team might still be a season away from having multiple players on offense that can take it to the house at any given time.

I think you're right about the younger RBs having more speed than the seniors
Juniors Roberson, Lehman, Soloria and Le and sophomores Britt, S. Stegbauer and McDonald
It looks like Britt and Roberson may be next up behind Napier and Patrick.

Outside of McClatchey the receivers will be a mix of underclassmen without varsity experience.

Vollmer will likely split snaps with Herbstreit in Saturday's scrimmage, then rep at other positions leading up to the Colerain scrimmage

CBs Shane Strayhorn and Macen Hall were on the 4x200m relay team clocking below 23 seconds for their 200 meter leg.

Reload, with camp coming up, how do you think week 1 against West is going to go?
I like the Bombers chances week 1.

Playing at a raucous Ballaban Field in the season opener.
Lakota West may be starting a freshman QB behind an inexperienced line hit hard by graduation.
The number of sacks and QB pressures by Sulfsted, Hammond, Folke, Clapper and Reeder will be off the charts.

The Firebird defense will be solid but withouts last season's 4 star recruits (Malik Hartford (Ohio State), Ben Minich (Notre Dame) and Josh Fussell (Northwestern).

You got me fired up.......let's just get the Week 1 thread started

A correction is in order. Macen Hall did not run track this year.
