St. Xavier Football 2021

I went to the StX - Moeller JV game yesterday and O'Malley looks really good. In my opinion which doesn't matter to any one I think he is the leading candidate to be the varsity starter next season

It's all even starting at January workouts....doesn't matter what anyone has nor has not done in lower levels. It's all about January-July '22

I don't think anyone disagrees with that, however good indicators of future success is past performance. Now will there be some surprises and some great battles that will come down to the wire of course there will be. That's one of the great things about X, the internal competition and each player pushing each other to get better. I think we're all just spitballing here and having some fun.

Michael McColgan has actually been tearing it up on the freshman squad at QB. He's outshined the other 2 and is an all around better athlete. Also Macen Hall should be in the mix for one of the CB spots, and Ty Wiseman should also be in the mix for the secondary. Either way X shouldn't experience any drop-off in talent for the foreseeable future.
I'm assuming that PJ McColgan (senior, #6 on varsity) is Micheal's older brother.
He transferred from Indian Hill and is listed as a wide receiver on the roster.
He returned a kickoff 22 yards vs Colerain and recorded 5 tackles in 2 games (Colerain and Moeller) on special teams
He took some snaps this week in practice as RB with the scout team so he's pretty versatile.

I agree with this because in the first half of the Moeller game when one of the Evil Empire defenders tore off McCaughey's helmet and he had to go out for a play they put Ryan Nolan in at QB and not one of the juniors (who had been in getting snaps in the second half running clock games)

Last year Nolan put up pretty impressive numbers in 3 games at QB covering for an ailing McCaughey.
43 for 55 (78%) for 575 yards with 6 TDs and 2 INTs

O'Malley saw his first varsity action during turbo time of last Friday's win vs LaSalle.
The sophomore took over McCaughey and finished the game so none of the junior QBs played which gives credence to your statement.
He was 2 for 2 for 15 yards and handed off to fellow sophomore RB Steve Napier who rushed for 13 times for 73 yards in a little over a quarter
The next day both played a significant number of minutes in the 14-6 JV win.

The final JV game vs St. Ignatius precedes the varsity game so it will be interesting how much time each of them plays in the earlier game.
My guess is they both play the first half only of the JV game and are on the varsity sidelines ready to spell Kellom and McCaughey

A handful of sophomores was just added to the Varsity roster for the remainder of the season.
Already on the roster were NG Ted Hammond and RB Steve Napier.
The 5 added are QB Jack O'Malley, CB Cole Harris, CB Macen Hall, LB Noah Beck and DL Justin Kattus

O'Malley is in good hands. Great to learn from Brogan who is a 3rd yr varsity player unfortunately, X didn't get any running clocks during his sophomore season. Still not a bad mentor; McCaughey has 50+ TDs, 4400+ yds & 67% comp rate in 15 games(total qtrs played) in high school

UPDATED 10/17/2021 (includes week 9)

3 players are still in position to set a Bomber record with 2 games plus post season left in 2021.
This despite the 6 turbo clock games this season and the Covid shortened regular season a year ago.

1. Terrell McFarlin’s 12 TD receptions is just 1 short of the season record of 13 set by Liam Clifford last season.

2. Charles Kellom (1,720 career rushing yards) is 280 yards short of the 2,000 yard club which will be good for top 10 in Bomber history

3. Brogan McCaughey who set single game records vs St. Ignatius last season is on pace to set single season records for completion percentage and TD/INT ratio. Currently his completion percentage 69.7 is better than Luke Massa's 67.2% in 2007 and his 21/0 ratio is better than Chase Wolf's 24/3 in 2017.

As for his career numbers below, he will finish 2nd all time behind 3 year starter and hall of famer Marty Mooney Jr.

Brogan McCaughey Passing
2020: 205 for 319 (64.3%) for 2,708 yards and 28 TDs and 11 INTs
2021 (through Week 9): 128 for 191 (67.0%) for 1,955 yards and *23 TDs and 1 INTs
Career: 333 for 510 (*65.0%) for 4,663 yards and 51 TDs and 12 INTs
Team Record: 17-4 (81%), state champions

Marty Mooney Jr. Passing
1999: 120 for 204 (59%) for 1,746 yards and *29 TDs/12 INTs
2000: 143 for 256 (56%) for 2,380 yards and 20 TDs/10 INTs
2001: 156 for 294 (53%) for 2,385 yards and 22 TDs/12 INTs
Career Totals: *419 for *754 (56%) for *6,511 yards and *71 TDs/*34 INTs
Team Record: 31-6 (84%), state runner up, regional runner up

A post-season run of 6 games where the last 4 aren't turbo clocks could allow McCaughey to rack up some serious passing yards and Mooney's 3 year numbers could be in sight.

Terrell McFarlin’s 1st quarter TD catch vs ELCA gives him 13 TD receptions for the year equalling the record set by Liam Clifford last season

Charles Kellom 131 yards rushing yards vs ELCA gives him 977 yards for the year and 1,851 career rushing yards. What sets Kellom apart from most other Bomber RBs is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and to lineup as a 4th or 5th WR when X goes empty backfield.
His 122 receiving yards vs ELCA was his first 100 yard receiving game and gives him 404 receiving yards for the year and 654 career.

Luke Kuechly to be inducted into the Buddy LaRosa's Hall of Fame in Class of 2021
WCPO article below

Luke Kuechly

St. Xavier High School

Class of 2009

Before his junior year at St. Xavier High School, the football coaches decided to move Luke Kuechly from tight end to linebacker. It proved to be one of the most significant decisions for both St. Xavier and Luke Kuechly – as he arguably became the greatest football player to come out of Greater Cincinnati this century.

The Bombers went on to become Ohio Division I state champions in 2007, while Kuechly went on to earn the first of what has become an amazing list of football accomplishments that may well lead him to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Kuechly racked up 277 tackles, seven sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recovers, three interceptions and one touchdown in his final two seasons at St. X.

Kuechly signed with Boston College, where his reputation for a ferocious style of play earned him every major award in the nation.

In three seasons, Kuechly set the BC and Atlantic Coast Conference career tackle records with 532 – just 13 short of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision record.

In 2011, he won the Butkus Award, the Lombardi Award, the Lott IMPACT Trophy and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He was a two-time consensus All-American and three-time first-team All-American.

He was the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

He led the nation in tackles as a sophomore (183 – 110 solos) and as a junior (191 – 102 solo).

Kuechly was the No. 9 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year (2012) and NFL Defensive Player of the Year (2013) his second season – joining NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor as the only other player to do that. He as a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a five-time First Team All-Pro pick. He retired after eight seasons in the NFL. Kuechly lives in Charlotte, N.C.
