Solon's ninth grade football team traveled to Stark County today and blitzed North Canton Hoover, 34-7.

For those who don't know, this group of Comets already has a reputation as one of the better classes to come through Solon's program. These kids went undefeated in "A" games in both seventh and eighth grades. Supposedly, this class has never won by fewer than 20 points.

Today, Solon looked every bit as good as the advance billing suggested. The Comet frosh looked big, fast, hungry, intense, and well-coached. Solon dominated Hoover from the opening snap.

Solon scored three times in the first half for a 20-7 lead. Tailback Jesse Circelli got the Comets on the board with a 60-yard punt return TD midway through the first quarter. A two-point run made it 8-0. Circelli capped a long drive with a 3-yard TD run early in the second period.

Hoover followed with its best drive of the day, moving mostly through the air for a score to cut the gap to 14-7. Moments later, Comets' backup QB Nate Brillhart connected with FB Nick Davidson for a swing pass that went for a 25-yard TD and 20-7 halftime lead.

Tailback Ryan Schwenke returned a punt about 70 yards for a third quarter TD that put Solon up, 26-7. Brillhart, playing with the backups in the fourth quarter, tallied Solon's final TD when he scrambled 55 yards to the end zone after fumbling the snap.

Patrick Kramer started at QB for Solon and directed the offense with confidence. He appeared to be an accurate short-range passer. Another freshman QB, Drew Stankiewicz, is playing up for the JV.

Circelli and Schwenke both looked very, very good at TB. Neither guy is real big but they're both fast and instinctive. Aaron Penn also looked good at TB. Davidson and Sam Palumbo got most of the snaps at FB.

The principal WRs were Tres Barksdale, Stephon Fields, Cory Stuart, and Bryce Littell. Michael Dunn and Reggie Jagers played TE.

The O-linemen were Vince Hill, Nate Hoff, Brennan Williams, Austin Stock, Patrick Vogel, Dan Sutyak, and Austin Schlosser.

Hoff, Williams, Stock, Sutyak, and Schlosser also played on the D-line. Stock, Sutyak, and Kalin Etheridge played end.

Jagers, Schlosser, Davidson, Penn, and Hill got most of the PT at linebacker. Hill is the middle LB.

Circelli, Schwenke, Stuart, Barksdale, Justin Kresevic, and Anthony Restifo played in the secondary.

The best players on the team appear to be Hoff and Hill. Hoff is already 6-1 and 260 pounds. He's got good speed, he's bull-strong and he has an attitude. I couldn't decide whether he was better on offense or defense.

Hill reminded be of John Kerr, who played for St. Ignatius and Ohio State in recent years. He's 6-0, 195 with the frame to get bigger. He's in on every tackle and he's a lights-out hitter.

Some of the other guys who really stand out are: Kramer, Circelli, Schwenke, Barksdale, Davidson, Jagers, Schlosser, Etheridge, Penn, and Stock. That's just from a one-time look; I'm sure others will shine over the course of the season.

Solon's frosh visit Jackson next Thursday.

the future

Good to see that our future is continuing in the right direction. Last losing season in 1969??? UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Wasn't there a kid named Wilkerson on the freshman team last year who appeared to be a stud. What became of him?

Yes, Travis Wilkerson. He was the fullback and middle linebacker for the freshman team and he was a talented player. He's the younger brother of Eric, who was the star tailback for the 2006 frosh.

Last I heard, Eric was still going to Solon schools but had some off-the-field issues that prevented him from playing football. I don't know if Eric's problems had anything to do with Travis' absence this fall but the younger Wilkerson never went out for the team.

Travis was the centerpiece of a very good linebacking corps for the 2007 frosh. Unfortunately, none of last year's starting 'backers are playing football this year.

But Solon has moved stud sophomore nose tackle A.J. Hicks to OLB and this year's frosh are loaded at linebacker. So don't worry, the pipeline will still produce top-grade talent.

Solon's freshmen improved to 2-0 with a 24-6 victory at Jackson today. Both Comet wins have occurred in Stark County against Federal League teams.

Solon wasn't as explosive as it was in last week's victory over Hoover. Jackson kept it close until the last five minutes. But the Comets flashed enough big-play capability to pull away late.

The Comets scored on all their first-half possessions. The trouble was, Solon only had the ball twice before intermission. Perhaps because of the rainy conditions, both teams played at a snail's pace. Drives tended to be lengthy and neither team was in a hurry to run plays.

Solon took the opening kickoff and moved smartly, though slowly dowfield, mixing the run and pass. Completions from QB Patrick Kramer to Bryce Littell and Tres Barksdale set up Jesse Circelli's 3-yard TD run.

Kramer's long run on a 4th-and-17 play kept Solon's second drive alive. Circelli swept 9 yards for the TD to make the score 12-0.

The Polar Bears tallied their only score seconds before the first half ended. Solon appeared to stop Jackson on downs late in the second period, but a pass interference call gave the Bears another chance.

Solon played a number of offensive subs in the second half. The game seemed destined to end at 12-6 until Comet linebacker Nick Davidson ripped the ball from a Jackson back's hands and raced 30 yards for a TD with about four minutes left.

Solon punter Vince Hill set up the game's final score by taking a bad snap and rumbling 50 yards to the Jackson three yard line with a minute left. Two plays later, backup tailback Desmond Davis reached the end zone.

The Comets were deeper, faster and more athletic than the Polar Bears. But at times, Jackson gave Solon trouble with its size and its physical running game. Once again, Nate Hoff stood out on both Solon lines. So did Dan Sutyak and Austin Schlosser.

Circelli had another standout game with 2 TDs and a pick at corner. Kramer didn't throw a lot but found his targets when he needed to. Barksdale looked good at receiver and also had an INT while playing safety.

I don't believe Davidson touched the ball when he was on offense but he made tackles all over the field from his linebacking position.

I thought Hill was the best player on the field. In addition to his punting duties, he's a big, fast, intimidating linebacker who hits a ton. He's a road grader on the offensive line. His impromptu run capped today's triumph. Hill is a very, very impressive athlete with a high ceiling. He'll be starring on Friday nights someday soon.

The Solon frosh finally play at Stewart Field next Thursday vs. Mentor. I'm told that Mentor has a super freshman team, so the Comets' long winning streak will be on the line.

Solon's freshmen improved to 3-0 with a thrilling 26-24 win today at Stewart Field over previously unbeaten Mentor. Solon scored the winning touchdown on a 39-yard pass from Patrick Kramer to Tres Barksdale with about 30 seconds left. The TD came on a 4th down-and-7 play. Barksdale ran a deep out to the left sideline. Kramer hit him in stride at the 10 and Barksdale beat two defenders to the end zone.

Following Solon's kickoff, Mentor drove to Solon's 30 yard line before time expired.

Today's win ensured that Solon's freshmen remain undefeated as a class. This group has never lost a game since coming together as seventh graders.

Solon had taken a 20-8 halftime lead but Mentor stormed back with two fourth quarter TDs. The Cardinals went ahead on a short TD run with 1:54 left.

The Comets got into position to score the game-winner with the help of a roughing-the-passer penalty and a couple of productive runs by TB Jesse Circelli, which caught Mentor off-guard. The Cardinals were playing deep to prevent a long pass completion.

Today's game featured two high-powered offenses and several dramatic momentum shifts.

Mentor took the opening kickoff and drove inside Solon's five yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Solon promptly threw an interception and Mentor quickly followed with a TD and a conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Comet tailback Ryan Schwenke returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a TD. Solon tied it on Circelli's conversion catch.

Solon drove for the go-ahead score behind backup QB Nate Brillhart and some clutch Circelli runs. Brillhart connected with Cory Stuart for a 13-yard TD pass that gave Solon a 14-8 lead.

The Comets got the ball back with just under a minute left in the half and looking as if they might run out the clock. Instead, Circelli broke off right tackle for a 70-yard TD run and a 20-8 lead.

Solon might have put the game away in the second half, but squandered several scoring chances. The Comets took the third quarter kickoff and drove to the Mentor one. Mentor held on downs as Solon tried a series of dives into the middle of the line, instead of running wide with Circelli.

With six minutes left in the game and still holding the 20-8 lead, Solon faced 4th-and-a-foot from the Mentor 41. Instead of going for the first down and milking the clock, Solon punted. One short kick and several passes later, Mentor scored and converted a two-pointer, making the score 20-16.

Two plays after Solon got the ball back, the Comets fumbled and Mentor recovered. The Cardinals then drove for the go-ahead score that set up Solon's comeback heroics.

It would be an understatement to call today's win "big." It is probably the hardest-won game that these kids have ever earned. The talk around the team the last few weeks was that Mentor was loaded and posed a huge threat to the long team winning streak.

Solon's victory was all the more impressive because Nate Hoff, the team's top lineman, didn't play.

Mentor's freshmen looked much like its varsity. They were big, disciplined and precise. The Cards' offense executed its spread attack like it was second nature. Solon's defense was caught out of position a number of times. But the Comets also came up with some outstanding stops through great effort and athleticism.

Middle linebacker Vince Hill was the best player for either team. He also punted and played on the offensive line, so he hardly ever left the field on a hot day. Austin Stock, Austin Schlosser, Kalin Etheridge, Sam Palumbo, Stuart and Circelli were Solon's other defensive stalwarts.

Solon's offensive line blasted holes all day through Mentor's bigger defensive line. Circelli was often five yards downfield before he was touched. Kramer had a great game at quarterback. His throws were accurate and Stuart and Barksdale helped out with several outstanding catches.

The Comets host Mayfield next Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Kickers

What kind of kickers do we have coming up in the program?? It looks like we have had a drop in this area for this year and this use to be a real strength for us.
Go Comets!!!

We don't have any kickers, jimbo. This is one of my biggest pet peeves with the way this program is run. Both the JV and freshman teams go for two after every score. If the Comets have, say, a 4th-and-goal from the 9-yard line, they have no choice but to go for it.

The lack of a kicking game cost Solon's JVs a potential victory over Mentor. Solon lost, 7-6. Each team scored a TD. But the Comets went for 2 after their score, and failed. Even worse, Solon drove deep into Mentor territory three other times. A field goal after any of those drives would have enabled Solon to win. It was a shame, because the Comets dominated Mentor and had only an "L" to show for their efforts.

Soph lineman Alex Heffernan kicks off for the JV team. He's got a strong leg. His kickoffs travel at least as far as the varsity kicker's. I didn't notice who punts for the JV.

Linebacker Vince Hill punts and kicks off for the freshman team. He's a very good punter for that level.

As a side note, I recently bumped into Solon's soccer coach at a local store. We talked about the football team's kicking game. He complained that the footballers would be coming to steal yet another of his players this spring. He seemed unhappy about the prospect.

I asked him why the football team didn't develop kickers at its lower levels and he shook his head, shrugged and said, "Logically, you'd think they would."

Solon's freshmen improved to 4-0 with a 28-2 victory over Mayfield yesterday at Stewart Field. The visiting Wildcats fell to 3-1.

The Comets scored on the first play after the opening kickoff. Quarterback Patrick Kramer found WR Tres Barksdale on a deep out pattern and Barksdale hauled in the pass and raced to the end zone for a 60-yard TD. Jesse Circelli caught the conversion pass and Solon led, 8-0.

Circelli intercepted a Mayfield pass at midfield on the ensuing drive. A few moments later, he scored from 15 yards out on a counter play, giving Solon a 14-0 lead. Circelli didn't play after the first quarter. He appeared to suffer some sort of minor injury. Circelli never took his pads off and the trainer examined him briefly. His absence seemed precautionary, rather than necessary.

Ryan Schwenke filled in at tailback and took advantage of his extended playing time. Midway through the second period, Schwenke broke off a 43-yard run that put Solon in the red zone. Moments later, he scored from 15 yards out. The Comets took that 20-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Schwenke intercepted a pass and ran it back 25 yards for an apparent touchdown. But the score was negated because of an illegal block on the return.

Later in the period, linebacker Michael Dunn stepped in front of a Mayfield pass and returned it 82 yards for the game's final TD. Dunn had to elude Wildcat tacklers until the last few yards. Schwenke ran in the two-point conversion.

Solon played reserves in the fourth quarter. The Comets lost the shutout with 46 seconds left in the game when Solon's quarterback recovered his own fumble in the Comet end zone.

Schwenke had a big day on both sides of the ball. He kept the chains moving on offense and laid out some hits at safety. He's also a first-rate return man.

I don't remember Barksdale catching a pass after he scored, but he's proving to be a standout who is ready for a higher level of competition. He's tall, fast, has great hands and he's also a very good safety.

Kramer was on target again. He's smooth and confident. With him and fellow frosh Drew Stankiewicz on JV, Solon will have quality quarterbacking after Jake Voigt graduates.

Dunn, Sam Palumbo, Aaron Penn, Brennan Williams, Kalin Etheridge and Dan Sutyak all excelled on defense. Standout linebacker Vince Hill was his usual self. The unit isn't quite as imposing now that Nate Hoff is playing for the varsity but it's still very strong.

The offense coasted today. One got the feeling that the coaches didn't want to embarrass Mayfield.

The Comets visit Hudson next Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Solon's freshmen improved to 5-0 with a 30-14 victory at Hudson that was easier than the score might indicate. The Comets played subs much of the second half and had a TD called back by a penalty, or the score might have been more one-sided.

Despite that statement, Hudson has a solid freshman team. The Explorers are big and physical. At times, they played Solon evenly at the line of scrimmage. But they could not match Solon in speed and big-play capability. Hudson fell to 4-1 with today's loss.

The most encouraging thing to take from today's game is that Solon was very productive offensively despite the fact that big-play specialists Jesse Circelli and Tres Barksdale hardly touched the ball. Circelli, a tailback, had a few carries in the first half but didn't play much from the middle of the second quarter. He'd been battling an injury, perhaps it cropped up again.

Barksdale played most of the game at safety but only played a few series at WR. He had an INT while on defense but dropped the only pass that came his way on offense.

Fullback-linebacker Nick Davidson was today's star. Davidson capped Solon's first drive by taking a swing pass from QB Patrick Kramer and scoring from five yards out. Circelli's conversion catch made it 8-0.

Solon regained possession early in the second quarter. Davidson got the ball on a trap and burst through a big hole for a 73-yard TD run and a 14-0 lead.

Hudson followed with its best drive of the day. The Explorers had some success with a power running game and converted a fourth down that led to a short TD run midway through the second period.

Solon got the ball back late in the half. The Comets executed a two-minute drive without using a timeout and did so mostly on the ground. Solon stopped the clock with first downs. With 16 seconds left, Kramer and Davidson hooked up on another swing pass. This one went for 35 yards and a TD. Nate Brillhart ran in the two-point conversion to make the halftime score 22-7.

Ryan Schwenke scored Solon's final TD by bursting up the middle for a 77-yard TD run on the Comets' first drive of the second half. From that point, Solon played mostly reserves. Aaron Penn took over at TB and led Solon on a lengthy drive. He appeared to score late in the third but his TD was wiped out by a penalty.

Hudson tallied a fourth-quarter TD on another short run.

Kramer, Davidson, Schwenke and linemen Austin Stock, Brennan Williams, Vince Hill and Dan Sutyak were Solon's offensive stars.

Hill, Austin Schlosser, Kalin Etheridge and Justin Kresevic keyed the defense.

Solon hosts Lakewood next Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

solon freshman football

Who do you think had the better freshmen team; Hudson or Mayfield? Did Mayfield come close to scoring against Solon's first team D?

Hudson's freshman team is better than Mayfield's. The Explorers were able to move the ball on Solon at times. Mayfield couldn't move the ball at all and didn't even remotely threaten to score.

Solon's freshmen improved to 6-0 today with a 42-0 romp over Lakewood at Stewart Field. The Rangers fell to 1-5. This game was a mismatch from the first play.

The Comets pulled their starters in the second period. Despite this, Solon scored every time it had the ball in the first half. The Comets emptied the bench before the end of the third period.

Solon took a 21-0 first period lead. The Comets opened the game by giving the ball to tailback Jesse Circelli on five straight plays. Circelli scored on his fifth carry, an 11-yard run. Solon's coaching staff then surprised everyone in the crowd by trotting out Anthony Restifo to kick the extra point. Restifo split the uprights with ease and Solon led, 7-0.

Moments later, Solon regained possession inside the Ranger 30 after a short punt. Quarterback Nate Brillhart and WR Bryce Littell hooked up for a 23-yard TD pass. Restifo's kick made the score 14-0.

The Comets got the ball in great field position yet again after a Lakewood fumble. A few plays later, Circelli scored from 10 yards out.

In the second quarter, Solon tallied two TDs; one, a 9-yard run by Ryan Schwenke; the other, an 8-yarder by Aaron Penn.

Reserve tailback Jordan Marshall scored from four yards out with two minutes left in the game.

This contest was so one-sided that it is difficult to single out players for praise. No one was on the field long enough to pile up big numbers. Circelli, Schwenke, and Penn all had some nice runs; Littell made a good adjustment on his TD catch; Tres Barksdale made a couple of nice plays at safety; several guys in the defensive front seven popped purple Lakewood helmets loudly enough to hear from the stands.

Solon has won all its games convincingly, except for the tight Mentor contest. But all of those victims challenged the Comets in one way or another. Lakewood, on the other hand, was completely overmatched. Solon was bigger, faster, deeper, and meaner and this disparity was evident from the first play.

Solon and Lakewood should not be playing in football.

FYI, Restifo made four of five extra points. He was wide on one attempt. A bad snap forced a two-point conversion pass on another. Restifo showed a strong leg and I hope he'll be allowed to develop as a kicker.

The Comet 9th-graders host Brunswick next Saturday at 10 a.m. I'm told the Blue Devils are a very good team, so the matchup should be a real challenge for Solon.

i think a reall good match up would be wadsworth and solon wadsworth hasnt lost in 2 years has beat every one this year more than 25 points and beat massilon 36-14 and tallmadge 72-6

Solon's freshmen continued their long winning streak with a 28-0 victory over Brunswick today at Stewart Field. The Comet 9th-graders improved to 7-0 this season. They are 21-0 since organizing as a team in seventh grade.

The Brunswick freshman team fell to 3-3-1.

Solon got off to a bit of a slow start today. The Comets failed to score on their first drive. Solon finally reached the end zone early in the second period, when Ryan Schwenke raced 26 yards for a TD. Anthony Restifo followed with the first of his four extra points.

QB Patrick Kramer and WR Bryce Littell hooked up for a long pass completion to set up Solon's second score. Tailback Jesse Circelli capped the drive with a 2 yard TD run.

Late in the period, Brunswick's punter shanked a kick behind the line of scrimmage. It squirted to LB Aaron Penn, who picked it up and rambled 45 yards for the TD.

Circelli completed the rout with a 71 yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter.

Solon's defense smothered Brunswick's offense. Star LB Vince Hill had a huge day, as he smashed any Blue Devil back who came his way. Penn, Sam Palumbo, Kalin Etheridge and Tres Barksdale all stood out for the defense. In reality, everybody played well in Solon's team effort.

Solon was solid, if unspectacular on offense. Schwenke and Circelli led the charge. Kramer was on-target, though he didn't throw many passes. The line played well as a unit.

Solon hosts Elyria Saturday at 10 a.m.

I don't know much about Elyria, except that the Pioneers beat Brunswick a few weeks ago. I'm glad that none of us have to make the long drive out to Lorain County.

From what I've heard, Medina is the best team left on Solon's schedule. They're supposed to be really, really good.

Strongsville's freshman team is not very good. The last I'd heard, they had lost their first four or five games.

Solon remained unbeaten with a 34-12 victory over Elyria today at Stewart Field. The Comet ninth-graders improved to 8-0; the Pioneers fell to 3-5.

This one could have been ugly, but the Comets seemed bound-and-determined to avoid running up the score on Elyria. Solon led, 27-0 at halftime. Many of Solon's starters had already been lifted at that point. The Comets had used the entire roster before the end of the third period.

Solon scored three plays into the game. Quarterback Patrick Kramer found WR Tres Barksdale on a simple curl; Barksdale juked one defender and was gone for a 49-yard catch-and-run. Anthony Restifo's kick made the score 7-0.

A long completion from QB Nate Brillhart to WR Bryce Littell set up Solon's second TD of the first period. TB Ryan Schwenke scored from 9 yards out. Restifo missed the extra point try.

Jesse Circelli's long punt return enabled Solon to start its next drive from Elyria's 10 yard line. On the next play, Kramer found FB Nick Davidson with a swing pass for another TD.

Schwenke added a two-yard TD run late in the second quarter. Barksdale set up the score with a circus catch on the previous play.

Elyria scored against Solon's reserves late in the third quarter.

Reserve TB Jordan Marshall scored Solon's final TD with nine seconds left in the game. Elyria followed with a meaningless long TD pass with no time left on the clock.

Once again, Kramer had an outstanding game at QB, making good decisions and distributing the ball to a variety of receivers. It was good to see Barksdale get involved in the passing game again. He's a major talent and he's got a bright future as a varsity player someday soon.

Davidson and Schwenke were outstanding on both sides of the ball. Davidson, in particular, was quick and active from his OLB spot. Solon's lineman dominated their bigger counterparts from Elyria. OT-DT Brennan Williams had a good game.

Solon's frosh visit Medina next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Bees are 6-1 and should be a real test for the Comets.

How many passing yards do you think Kramer has?

I have no idea. However, I doubt it's a staggering total. Solon is primarily a running team. Also, backup QB Nate Brillhart plays at least 40 percent of the time. With Kramer, it's his efficiency that's impressive, rather than his numbers.

No idea. It's impossible to handicap games against an opponent your team has never played before.

Ok i agree with you it is going to be a tough game for Solon. Do you know who Medina's best player is?

Nope. I don't know anything about Medina, other than the fact that they're good. Remember, however, that I'm just a fan, not a coach or player. I'll bet they know quite a bit about Medina.
