The U17 world team trials start tomorrow (4/24) with Greco Roman with finals on Thursday. FS finals on Sunday - I assume they start on Friday, but need to verify.

I'm less confident in the U20 team this year (zero NCAA All-Americans?) but a team of Lilledahl-Larkin-Valencia-Duke-Mantanona-Ryder-Sinclair-Mirasola-McDanel-Mullen is at least competitive at a bunch of weights. Meyer Shapiro and Levi Haines are both still U20 eligible, perhaps they will show up at trials.

Eight guys at 71…wow.

Hopefully Shapiro and Haines show up at trials, Marcus Blaze too. I honestly feel extremely confident in this year’s team. No NCAA all Americans but the field is absolutely littered with Cadet and Junior World medalists, that means more to me in a lot of cases than NCAA AAs. Some of these weights like 57 are absolutely incredible, Lilledahl is the returning Junior World silver and will have to fight tooth and nail just to make the team for instance.

Couple big JR additions that just showed up and aren’t listed above. Braeden Davis at 61, Josh Barr at 86. Both among if not the favorite at their weight. Barr has been forgotten about a bit during his redshirt but look for a big performance from him imo.

Is Rocco Welsh still eligible? Be nice to see him at 79KG

I'm a big Josh Barr guy. Rocco Welsh is a 2003 birthday, so not U20 eligible. Barr is eligible by 5 days.

Wax enrolled at Coffman now? Whoa

Big congrats to Ohio's Loc Webber, who made the U17 Greco-Roman world team at 45kg. Webber posted three straight 8-0 techs, all in under a minute, to make the best 2/3 finals, where he won the first two matches 7-5 and 8-0.

Webber will wrestle in Amman, Jordan the week of August 19th. Believe he's an incoming Dublin Coffman guy, please correct me if I'm wrong there!

Ohio State's Vinny Kilkeary and Ryder Rogotzke are both in the quarters as well.

U20 Finals Matchups:

57kg- Luke Lilledahl v Vinny Kilkeary. Mendoza beats Jax Forrest, Kilkeary techs Mendoza in a minute. Godspeed against Lilledahl, who has looked great today/yesterday.

61kg- Cael Hughes v Kyler Larkin. Hughes came back from 10-2 in the quarters, Larkin hasn't looked great today but has won two close ones

65kg- Aden Valencia v Bo Bassett. Valencia grinded a quarters win against Sergio Lemley and won a fun one against Pierson Manville. Bassett had two techs today after a very close win yesterday in R16.

70kg- PJ Duke v Kody Routledge. Duke teched Kannon Webster in the semis. Routledge is the first guy here who isn't super elite, but he's Flo's #17 overall in the Class of 2025 and committed to Nebraska

74kg- Joe Sealey v LaDarion Lockett. Two great semis- Sealey won 13-10 over Mantanona, Lockett came back to win 9-7 vs Bouzais. Also two former U17 world champs in the finals

79kg- Noah Mulvaney v Zack Ryder. Ryder's 4-3 over Will Henckel in the quarters was a solid win. Mulvaney has teched all five opponents this tournament.

86kg- Aeoden Sinclair v Josh Barr. Sinclair beat Rogotze and Naaktgeboren to make the finals. Barr beat McEnelly 6-2 in the semis. Sinclair has looked great so far.

92kg- Connor Mirasola v Justin Rademacher. Mirasola has a combined 42-0 score in his four matches. Rademacher teched Gavin Nelson in the quarters. Mirasola has looked amazing this week, maybe MOW winner.

97kg- Camden McDanel v Cole Mirasola. Very clearly the two best guys here. Should be a close final.

125kg- Jim Mullen v Nick Sahakian. Mullen with two chest wraps to tech Hunter Catka 16-4, really impressive match from him. Sahakian won an absolute barnburner against Attao in the semis.

Just to show how high a bar this U20 national freestyle tournament is, we are defining an Ironman finalist that is top 20 in the rising senior class as not "super elite", and I think that is a reasonable analysis of Routledge relative to those finalists in the weight classes below him (and some of those above him).

U20 Open Finals. Note- winners here make the finals of trials in June, this isn't the world team just yet!

57kg- Lilledahl over Kilkeary 10-0. Kilkeary wearing a Sammy Sasso singlet, with Jaggers + Stieber in his corner (for you Ohio State fans). Lilledahl gets a shot clock point, no other score after 1st period, Lilledahl maybe a little more aggressive. Really nice early TD in 2nd from Lilledahl makes it 3-0, another nice drag for 2 makes it 5-0. Kilkeary in on a shot, but Lilledahl readjusts and gets a step out. An exposure on the edge makes it 8-0, another TD makes it a 10-0 tech. Lightning Luke makes it look easy.

61kg- Cael Hughes over Kyler Larkin 6-3. Two tall guys, Hughes looks massive for this weight. Early single for a TD for Hughes, followed by a nice double-turned-single for Hughes TD. Oh a beautiful sequence from Hughes, Larkin had him dead on a TD and Hughes grabs the leg while in a quad pod position for his own exposure, making it 5-0. Hughes with a sweep single in the 2nd period for a step out. Larkin grabs a step out and a TD near the buzzer to make the final 6-3.

65kg- Bo Bassett over Aden Valencia 5-2. These two met at Last Chance I believe, Bassett won. Shot clock + step out (after a fun scramble) makes it 2-0 Bassett. Another scramble with a minute left makes it 5-2 Bassett, and that's your final score. For all the talk about Bassett's age, he was the youngest guy in the finals and he got it done.

70kg- PJ Duke over Kody Routledge 10-0. Nice takedown in the middle of the 1st for Duke (followed by shot clock) to make it 3-0, then a beautiful snap down to gut makes it 7-0 for Duke at the break. Stuffed shot to a TD makes it 9-0 Duke, push out for the tech. Duke looks great, really impressive stuff. Wonder if Meyer Shapiro is healthy enough in June to contest the spot.

74kg- LaDarion Lockett over Joe Sealey 8-2. Battle of two former U17 champions here, both at 71kg the last two years. Looks like Lockett hurt his leg after defending a Sealey reattack, but seems to be okay after a nice takedown to make it 2-0. Lockett kicks out of a beautiful ankle pick as well and picks up a shot clock point to make it 3-0. Late caution+1 makes it 3-1 Lockett, but Dee counters the gut attempt and it's 5-1 at the break. Step out after the break makes it 6-1, Lockett converting on shots at a high rate. Step out makes it 6-2, but Lockett fires off a double to make it 8-2. That's the final score, maybe a Dee Lockett/Levi Haines match in June?

79kg- Zack Ryder over Noah Mulvaney 12-2. Ryder so good with the under hooks, gets two early takedowns to make it 4-0. Step out makes it 5-0, Ryder holding good position as we go into the break. Another step out makes it 6-0, while a throw by on the edge makes it 8-0. Ryder gets a step out to make it 9-0, but is totally gassed with a minute left. Ryder gives up two step-outs, but gets one of his own and a TD to make it a 12-2 final. Kid needs to work on the gas tank before June!

86kg- Aeoden Sinclair over Josh Barr 10-0. Nice drag from Sinclair for the first takedown. A fun scramble at the end of the period results in two more for Sinclair, making it 4-0 at the break. Sinclair extremely good defending shots and creating offense after failed shots. Another reattack TD for Sinclair makes it 6-0, tack on another one for an 8-0 score. Oh buddy, a fifth TD makes it a 10-0 tech, Sinclair looks fantastic in the win.

92kg- Connor Mirasola over Justin Rademacher 5-0. The lighter of the Mirasola's is Connor, who scores two TDs in the first two minutes to lead 4-0 at the break. Not much going on in the 2nd period, a shot clock point makes it a 5-0 final. Hope Rademacher walks away thinking he was only taken down one more time than Aaron Brooks was when he wrestled Mirasola.

97kg- Camden McDanel over Cole Mirasola 5-1. Big time matchup here, Mirasola in on a shot early but defended well by Cole. Shot clock point makes it 1-0 McDanel, followed by a shot and a bad business decision by Mirasola giving up the exposure to make it 3-0 at the break. Nice shot from Mirasola results in a caution+1, but nothing happening in par terre. Step out for Camden and a failed challenge for Ben Askren make it 5-1, which will be the final. Nice gameplan for McDanel, really controlled the match all six minutes.

125kg- Jim Mullen over Nick Sahakian PIN. Sahakian opens scoring with a takedown and a gut, looks noticeably bigger than Mullen. Mullen counters with a takedown to make it 4-2, but Sahakian with a big time throw to lead 8-2. Big Jim then goes foot sweep straight to the back for a pin! Needs to get bigger to compete at U20s, but has some real speed and skills for the weight.

Only one Ohio semifinalist today in U17s, with Brandon Bickerton knocking off Hudson Chittum at 45kg. Bickerton will have Samuel Sanchez of California in the semis.

Nine Ohio guys lost in the quarters- Austin Bickerton, Rylan Seacrist, Grey Burnett, Karson Brown, Mavrik Gregory, Carson Thomas, Aiden Peterson, and James Bechter. Burnett dropped a close 5-4 decision, obviously a disappointing finish to his great 2024 season.

2024 U17 Men's Freestyle World Team:

45kg- Sammy Sanchez, CA
48kg- Henry Aslikyan, CA
51kg- Dom Munaretto, IL
55kg- Keanu Dillard, PA
60kg- Jordyn Raney, KY
65kg- Nate Askew, NC
71kg- Melvin Miller, PA
80kg- Emmitt Sherlock, MD
92kg- Dreshaun Ross, IA
110kg- Michael Mocco, FL

Always excited to see a bunch of new faces and names at this tournament. Like our group of 10- Munaretto is the only returning world team member, he won gold in 2022 down at 45kg. Munaretto, Sherlock and Raney all made the Greco team as well- Raney is a returning world champ at that style. I really liked Miller, Ross, and Mocco (yes, son of Steve) while watching trials. Outside of 2019, the US is bringing home at least five medals at this tournament every year.

U17 worlds are in Amman, Jordan on August 19th-25th this year. Amman is seven hours ahead of eastern US time, so a pretty rough time for early rounds, but the semis/finals should be at a much more manageable time of day. Can't wait to watch these guys scrap!

So.....The Ramey twins both make world team in Greco, but they are in the same weight in Freestyle? How did that happen?

I read that the one that went 55kg for Greco couldn't hold weight for FS (or didn't want to).
