was just curious is there's a law or something regarding this? gas jumped .30 overnight. is this b/c of the storm coming or is this supply/demand? i think its bending the population over and not using petroleum jelly.

After 9/11 some gas stations were reported and supposedly investigated for raising gas by quite a bit.

30 cents over night? They wont even bat an eye at that.

I think gas stations do it quite a bit. It needs to be pretty blatant for them to get in trouble.

I have gotten pretty good about timing my gas purchases. I only fill up to keep my tank around 1/3 or 2/5 full until I see a price I like. This is less of an option if you drive a ton. My car gets pretty good mileage and I don't drive a ton of miles so I can stretch it out awhile.

Retail margins on gas are very slim, price goes up because gas futures go up. Also location dictates price, a location in a nice 'burb or in the hood is the highest; those in a blue colar area are the lowest.

BTW there is a reason why the corner gas station now looks more like the local 7/11, this is now where the local owner makes his profit. In the old days it was a mechanic's garage.

Auggie, I think that a more accurate statement would be that TYPICAL retail margins are pretty slim.

The fact is that many deliveries of gas arrive at the station at a low wholesale price, and the pump price jumps with the market easily 10 - 12% while much of that delivery is still in the holding tank. When the market falls, pump prices fall more slowly in most cases.
