EBC Wrestling

Final Standings

1. Carrollton 6-0
2. Minerva 5-1
3. Canton South 3-3
4. Salem 3-3
5. Alliance 2-4
6. West Branch 1-5
7. Marlington 1-5

Season takeaways - Hats off to Carrollton and a huge congratulations for winning the EBC. Wouldn't be surprised to see Carrollton win the next two years as well with their four man pack-a-punch at 106-126 only being sophomores. Minerva displayed dominance in their 5 wins and was a very good second place. Canton South was probably not your third best team, but were able to get a 37-36 criteria win over shorthanded Salem and a 32-31 win over Marlington - Marlington and Salem beat Alliance, Alliance beat CS 51-24. Regardless, great coaching from Retherford, a win is a win! Salem had a handful of pretty good freshmen in the starting lineup and grabbed wins over WB and Alliance for the first time in what seems like forever to my knowledge. Alliance has a promising sophomore class, and has plenty of room for improvement. West Branch struggled all season, losing duals they should have been winning, nice to end on a win against Marlington. Lastly, we have Marlington. The Dukes had continuous improvement throughout the season, but were too young and light numbered.

To add to your point Carrollton and Minerva were also 1 and 2 in the standings in junior high with Carrollton having a good 7th grade class.

Warriors brought their hip's to the Minerva party!???
This is my first ever post on here. Boys love the cows ? ? and tractor emojis but you need a green tractor cause when you drive to Carrollton in the summer that’s what color tractor Jenkins boy is driving. #itswhatwedo

Marlington also had 4 forfeit against wb and still came down to final match. If they dont do a coach change at wb soon . They will have trouble even filling a team moving forward let alone miving up from bottom of barrel

Minerva will be top 2 at sectionals and probably top 5 districts. Carrollton going to the tougher sectional should eek out a sectional top 5 and a top 15-20 at districts.

Salem and Marlington are going to CF Northwest. Salem will probably finish top four, Marlington more towards the middle of the pack around 6-8.

WB, Alliance, and CS are all going to West Branch. Alliance will probably be the only top 5 team, with WB and CS towards the middle to end.

Why are they not going to wb? Weakest sectional in the state any division. Wb set it up that way but probably still only get 2 of their own kids out not sure why any one would avoid this tournament

Big WB fan I see.
‘Weakest sectional in the state in any division”

No D3 team is touching the top dog at West Branch Sectional - Louisville. WB also has no say in this.. it’s a random draw of 25 teams, and prior to this year have been sending a good handful of guys to districts.

Louisville had a pretty good pull. Four of the top six teams, Canfield, Norton, Salem and CVCA all went to Northwest. CVCA and Norton staying home came at no surprise, but looking at the weights Salem and Canfield are good at, you could compare to Louisville and probably see why they’d take their first trip to NW. West Branch, CS and Alliance would have probably done the same thing, had they not drafted later on.

The only confusing one to me is Canfield and Salem going to NW. I understand dodging Louisville but looking at both lineups I don't know that either team has many guys that are going to be sectional champs at any sectional and now they're thrown into much deeper brackets and could possibly find themselves on the outside looking in when it all settles

Salem’s biggest benefits :
138 at Northwest
- Stecker of Salem (33-9 FR)
- ??

138 at West Branch
- Hoffarth of Louisville proj State Champ
- Craddock of Cloverleaf - State Ranked 11th, proj District placer
- Spangler of Howland - State Ranked 25th Senior
- Garcia of Poland - Senior

215 at Northwest
- Snider of CVCA - State Champ 2021
- Scharrer of Canfield - State Ranked 29th
- Murray of Salem - State Ranked 33rd

215 at West Branch
- Marra of West Branch - State Ranked 6th, proj State placer
- Ridenour of Cloverleaf - State Ranked 21st
- Mozden of Alliance - State Ranked 28th
- Baxter of Howland - State Ranked 30th
- Pirone of Poland - State Ranked 31st

285 at Northwest
- Kamperman of Salem - State Ranked

Kamperman led in their H2H before being pinned.

285 at West Branch
- Gibson of Howland - State Ranked 5th, proj District Champ and State placer
- Brazek of Louisville - State Ranked 7th, proj State placer

Could see very high finishes at any three of these weights for Salem, whereas at 138 and 215 may not have even made it out of NW, and at 285 Kamperman would be going into districts with a 2 or 3 seed.

I don’t think Salem or Canfield expected each other to flip, but I would say they made the right choice in terms of their better wrestlers having the best shot to make a run.

I think they're both likely to get top guys better seeds in their Districts but also both more likely to get less through. I guess it's a double edged sword, there's no perfect choice for either

215 and 126 benefit both Salem and Canfield, both teams could meet in the finals there. Poullas and Hull would be favored at either sectional, but get some breathing room at Northwest.
Are you saying that Salem and Canfield can meet in the championship at 215? Did you forget about Kyle Snider from CVCA at 215.

Salem took 3rd at Northwest w 169.5. Stecker and Burt champs. 8 top four, one alternate.

Carrollton finished 4th at Steubenville. 3 champs, 1 second, 2 thirds, 2 fourths and 3 alternates

Salem - Burt 120
Alliance - Simmons 150
West Branch - Marra 215
Canton South - Miller was best shot - injury scratched before tournament
Marlington - ?

Takeaways - Minerva wrestled GREAT. Six to Columbus is incredible. Carrollton put on an impressive display as well with 3, but probably expected more. Salem gets Burt in at 120, who avenged 2 regular season losses to Mason (All) in the blood round. West Branch’s Marra had a good showing, suffering only his first loss of the season to defending State Champ, Snider of CVCA. Alliance had a placer in Simmons at 150. Yet just miss with two alternates in Mason and Mozden, not the showing they wanted. Mozden lost r2 to Getz (SVSM, ranked #4 in the state), and ran in to a blood round match against Marra from WB. The other consi semi was Murray (Salem), and Scharrer (Canfield). Mozden had h2h wins over both. Mason had the draw on paper to walk into state, having beaten Burt last year at sectionals, and twice during the regular season at Hoppel and their dual. Mason lost 10-8.

12 remain.
