It seems like privates everywhere are shrinking.

here in the Mahoning valley - all schools are shrinking. We don’t have a D1 school here.

I’m an Austintown Fitch grad and there were the last D1 and they are D2 now. And have a pretty decent OE population.

Warren where I live used to have 2 D1 schools. Now they only have one school and it’s D2.

No school has moved up. All have moved down

In fairness, the changes to divisions several years ago is the primary cause for this. Schools like Massillon, Wadsworth, Green (most of the federal league for that matter) all used to be D1....now they're all D2.

But also yes, enrollment is down across the board. Sort of goes back to my argument about how dumb education is in the state of Ohio. There is absolutely no logical argument that can be made to show that having schools with 50 kids in a graduating class makes sense. From a cost standpoint, no way it should happen. It is the number one reason why education funding is always so $%*#@& in this state and why schools can't pass levies.....and this is coming from a Dalton supporter....

Do you think it's because of Online/Homeschooling, and charter schools that are causing the drop in enrollment? I know that is the case for public.
not necessarily. It’s just situational, IMO. What hurts the ‘lics doesn’t necessarily hurt the rollers.
So, the charters are sort of their own deal that aren’t really affecting schools located outside of the Three C’s.

I think “online/homeschooling” doesn’t have the impact on private school enrollment people would expect. For all the uproar nationally about the ‘ills of public education today’, they’re not leading to a boon from what I can tell in private enrollment. And, albeit this is an observation bias, pretty much everyone I’ve ever come across in real life who has jumped on that rhetorical wagon… their kids either still go to public schools, or, wait for it, their kids are pretty crappy students who DGAF about school anyway.

The number of kids I've seen who have chosen online/homeschooling in HS and then came back to regular/traditional school credit deficient is astounding. Don't know why some parents feel that kids who refuse to do work in a structured environment will suddenly thrive in a completely unstructured environment. It does work for some, but it is definitely the minority.

Mhmmm!!! 🗣️🗣️🗣️

There’s a school by us (who shall remain nameless) where a stud athlete did online/homeschool and basically it got away from him. Kid ends up going fishing, weightlifting and whatnot during the school day, ends up having his entire eligibility his senior year thrown down the drain because of the various markers he didn’t meet academically. Sad!

Covid has had a huge impact on declining enrollment, parents are still afraid to send kids to school so they stick them online or homeschool. I know there are a few at Trimble.

St Rose of New Lexington closed two years ago, and Sheridan built a wall around Holy Trinity in Somerset. When I’ve told the school administration and opined aloud in meetings “hey, you see that Northwest part of Fairfield County… (where I live) Pickerington and Canal Winchester? Where 45% of the county population and the highest concentration of wealth is located, with two big parishes? Let’s try and market there” I get met with ‘well… 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 what about our town? Our parish? 🥺🥺🥺

It seems like it's becoming a lost cause for privates in SEO, no real interest in them.

Northwest - stud QB went to online school in the middle of his Junior year because he got a girl pregnant and the baby was born. Didn't do well, and some classes didn't transfer. Academically ineligible to play football his senior year...this was literally last season

there’s a strong cognitive dissonance and more immediate resolution of my soul every time I go to the ballot box and vote Republican for Ohio General Assembly… because while I thoroughly believe in the values and necessity of a strong public education system FOR ALL (bedrock of this country and it’s future), the fact of the matter is EdChoice for All may be the final drawn-up play to save the alma

Notre Dame in Portsmouth has managed to thrive with expanded EdChoice and the poor state of public schools in Scioto County outside of Wheelersburg. School had one foot in the grave, but EdChoice saved it.

FC’s situation is just really, really, really unusually weird and difficult for a variety of reasons. I gave the entirety of my 20’s to the school and its kids however I could, as often as I could. Time and heart well spent any day of the week, but it still gets to me.

FC situation is sad and I can only hope they grow again.

I am a big opponent of having athletes go all online because of situations like this. A lot easier to keep tabs on kids when they are in the building.

While all 3 are shrinking, no doubt about it, Fitch, Harding, and Boardman all would be D1 still if the divisions were what they were prior to 2013 (6 divisions, evenly split). Even with 7 divisions, if they were evenly split, Boardman and Fitch would be D1.

The overall sentiment is correct though. The only areas per the 2020 census that had experienced any population growth compared to the 2010 census were Canfield and Columbiana. Cortland was even, everyone else has experienced some sort of decline.
