2023 Western Reserve Conference

Six schools remain after Madison starts their first season in the Chagrin Valley Conference. Riverside returns as the WRC champs and will be looking to repeat, as well as strive for another deep playoff run. Chardon and Kenston will battle to play spoiler for the Beavers and again make some noise in the D3 playoffs. Willoughby South and Mayfield return some skilled players. Eastlake North will build off some talent after a successful JV season.

Returning 2022 News-Herald All-Stars:

Player of the Year:

M. Maloney, Riverside Sr. QB: Completed 143 of 225 passes (64 percent) for 2,289 yards and 28 touchdowns against only three interceptions. He added 677 yards rushing and 15 running touchdowns, with an average of 6.2 yards per carry.

First-Team Offense:

S. Patrick, Kenston Sr. RB: Ran for 1,496 yards and caught 36 passes for 721 yards. On defense, he was a lockdown corner with three picks.
L. Bryant, Chardon Sr. OL: Big, 275-pounder was a three-year starter and anchor of the Bombers’ multi-faceted offense.

First-Team Defense:

A. Bruce, Chardon Sr. DB: Division I college recruit had three picks, seven PBUs and was also a breakaway threat on offense and on returns.

Second-Team Offense:

T. Cardona, Kenston Jr. WR: Had 54 catches for just under 900 yards. The go-to man for QB Nikko Georgiou.

Second-Team Defense:

J. Barch, Mayfield Sr. LB: Hard-hitting junior had 96 tackles, 27 TFLs and four sacks with two PBUs and fumbles caused.
L. Colombi, Chardon Sr. DB: Big-time Division I college recruit had 49 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, nine PBUs and two picks.

I would disagree as Chardon playing a “spoiler.” One decent year by Riverside with a 21-7 win over Chardon, albeit impressive, wouldn’t characterize Riverside as the end all be all favorite heading into 2023. One year of success doesn’t equate to a traditional powerhouse. I’d like to include Mayfield into this discussion as well. Mayfield returns a lot.

Correction there is no more Akron Kenmore-Garfield. The school is now only GARFIELD GOLDEN RAMS. ( Actually as all Akron City Schools are called Community Learning Centers)

Riverside ran the table in the WRC in 2022 for both varsity and JV. They are the returning champs and expected to repeat with the amount of talent returning until another school proves otherwise.

We’ll agree to disagree. If Chardon’s 4 lineman, 1 freshman and 3 sophomores, play JV instead of starting in an elite 8 game, that JV game with Riverside would have been different. JV doesn’t tell the whole story. Not to mention sophomore Caleb Hewitt starting on Varsity as well.

Riverside may win the WRC next season, but they are not the favorite. It’s a 3-team race between Riverside, Chardon, and Mayfield.

How many sophomores started on Varsity for Riverside? Chardon had 4, with 2 others getting meaningful playing time.

The league stinks. Riverside would be better served joining the league that Mentor is in. Why don’t they invite Kirtland in to WRC?

No sophomores. 7 junior starters and at least 2 other juniors with significant playing time.

I haven't heard anything. Kenston has two-year deals with Chagrin Falls and West G for OOC games starting next year. Not sure where they would be heading to other than the CVC.

I’m not sure what the CVC will look like with Madison and Jefferson and then Kirtland playing the big schools but dam if my blue streaks gotta play the Hornets I will not even think about placing any bets with my father lol. I’m in a lose lose situation there lol

Kirtland is planned to drop back down to the Valley Division, so Madison should be safe from playing them even for cross over games lol

Could have seen Avon play Chardon. 8/25 is still open on Avon’s schedule and Chardon was one of the programs Avon contacted. I see Chardon has Avon Lake the next week.

Chardon had West G locked in for Week 1 since last season. Would have been a highly anticipated match up with Avon if the Hilltoppers weren’t already locked in for Week 1.

I think Riverside has the clear path to the WRC champs, Chardon will likely win at least 8,9 of 10 (depending on who fill's their two open dates). Mayfield and W South will probably make some noise and North will be better then they were (gave a good fight on several nights, just ask Kenston). Kenston will be competitive as usual but i think they may be losing a chunk of seniors. I also believe Kenston has a bit of a player shortage? Maybe someone knows more on that.

What is Kenston looking like for next year?

I think a few notable returning starters are:

OL Cale Doyle
WR Tymir Cardona
ATH Sean Patrick (getting a ton of DI offers)

Who's gonna be the signal caller once Georgiou graduates?

I'm interested to hear how their lower grade programs did this year. From my understanding, they were unable to field a freshmen team. Are they preparing a jump to another league or planning on increasing their football numbers?

They haven’t had a freshman team in several years. Even predating their state championship in 2018

I actually kind of like the direction the league is going. Though there are less teams parity is way up!

I had a feeling. Declining enrollment in combination with the WRC grind against bigger schools. Their only other option would be the CVC, which I think they’d dominate most seasons (Kirtland probably wouldn’t be in their CVC division).
