Bowl Season

They had their shot at beating Bama though. Where’s the harm in letting another team try? We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see Oklahoma acquit themselves very well after a terrible start. They were awesome in the second half last night

Had Oklahoma not been snoozing for the first three TDs it could have been tough for Bama. That's a big "what if" though.

Nice post, I agree with your analysis.

Interesting debate on where Clemson stand - I'd say they're right smack in the middle. Not quite Alabama level, but still above the rest though closer than some want to admit. If you want to say Clemson is in the tier with Oklahoma/Ohio State etc - they're leading that tier by a couple scores.

Clemson has been to every Playoff - winning one, losing to Bama twice (once as Runner-up, once as Semifinalist). In their playoff runs Clemson has beaten - Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Their regular season losses though not bad in score have been to average bowl teams - Pitt and Syracuse.

Ohio State has the one title where they beat Bama and Oregon, but they have that no-show in the Semifinal against Clemson as well. They also have terrible score losses to Iowa and Purdue - both bowl teams as well.

Oklahoma has 3 Playoff trips and is 0-3. They're the class of the Big XII, but the Big XII has shown to be the worst conference result-wise in the Playoff Era.

If I'm ranking programs on tiers I'd have:
#1 Alabama
#2 Clemson
#3 Ohio St, Oklahoma, Georgia
#4 Notre Dame, Washington, etc.

To me Clemson is smack in the middle of Bama and the next 3. Oklahoma is closer to ND and Washington than they are Clemson though.

So a 7-5 or 6-4 bowl record is "pretty dominant" but I'm the one hedging by saying .500 or less?

Well let's compare them by conference then - Ronnie already did the SEC for us:
SEC Bowl record since 2008:

2008: 6-2
2009: 6-4
2010: 5-5
2011: 6-3
2012: 6-3
2013: 7-3
2014: 7-5
2015: 9-2
2016: 6-7
2017: 5-6(one loss came from Alabama beating Georgia in the CFP NC)

So the answer is 3. Convenient of Ghost to want to include .500 bowl records. Regardless, they've been pretty dominant.

So starting in 2008 here's the rest:

Missed Richt retiring. Miami hired Manny Diaz to replace him. Diaz was hired to be Temple's HC on the 13th. Seems like Miami material.

Where did I say the SEC didn't have the best bowl record? Can you quote it for me? I said they have had plenty of bowl seasons with .500 or less records, whatever else you read into is just you arguing with yourself.

SEC has huge programs in some of the best recruiting regions in the country. No other conference can really compete, so it's not a surprise it is the toughest conference.

I haven't followed this totally, but his post is dead on against your argument that they don't deserve the praise they get.

Is that what I said, that the SEC doesn't deserve any praise they get? Pretty simply, it was what others have already said, that the gap is not as large as some would have you think.

Horribly coached game by Michigan State. Dominate in every statistical category but find a way to lose. Lewercke sucks. Somehow they forget to just run the damn ball down their throat. The RPO was working all game but they continue to try to throw the ball

Didn't watch Oregon vs MSU. Doesnt seem like I missed much.

Kind of surprised to see MSU hold them to so few points. Not surprised the game was close but that Oregon only scored 1 TD

Watching pregame show for NW and they are saying he will meet with the Packers after the bowl game

Would be a huge loss for NW

MSU defense was really impressive. Feel bad for that unit.

Oregon may have crossed the 50 once the entire game, but scored a TD that one time. MSU was in Oregon territory probably six times but could only muster two field goals

Is it just me or do others have the feeling that a lot of the teams in these bowl games are just "mailing it in"?
The world juniors ice hockey between Canada and Russia is a lot more entertaining.

It's almost like guys aren't inspired to play in the Cheez-It Bowl or the Redbox Bowl. I'm sure that would shock a lot of people.
