Youth Softball Coach Arrested?

Did Tony Grace move to Hoover!!! :stirthepot:

This doesn't surprise me. Too many dad's or Mom's think they know everything or think they are coaching high school kids.

Surprised it took this long to get on here. Predicting this topic will be closed within a couple hours.

Guess that would depend what direction the thread takes. There is something to be said about making people aware of this type of thing.

It is(was) in the news.

Mudcat,

I have no issue with people knowing... it's false assumptions/rumors/etc that come out of speculation by people who don't know what's going on (i'd be one of those btw... don't know, don't want to know) that cause problems that's all :)

Well, include me in the camp that wants to know. As a father of 4 daughters who are in the NC district, this really pisses me off!! Are there ANY backround checks on these coaches? Who is ultimately responsible for these checks? There are allegations and an arrest has been made! This should concern everyone, including you!

After reading the article,He is being investigated for something completely different than I thought.

I agree this should be discussed on here. The man in question is a respected man for his knowledge of the game.I think alot of parents just assume because so and so has a good rep that nothing will happen like this.If he is guilty then I hope he gets more than 60 days in jail.

Wow, After learning who this guy was an old saying came to mind. He who lives in glass houses should not throw stones. I can think of a number of baseball players in the past that strayed from the path, and this guy would make sure everyone new the details no matter how it effected them or their families. So this guy is fair game. Surprised this did not hit the papers in Stark County.

He coaches travel ball doesn't he? So the parents would be 'on their own' to check into those coaches. Also, I didn't say I wasn't concerned. I said don't jump to conclusions before facts are known. There's a HUGE difference. I also didn't say it shouldn't be on here.... I agree it's important for people to know. Usually what follows "knowing" however is a lot of assumptions/guesses being made before the facts are actually presented in court/to the public. I don't know this man anymore than most common softball fans. I'll wait and see what happens in the court cases.

In high school, FBI backgrounds checks are mandatory, even for volunteers every year.

his teams have played strictly ASA softball. I think the ASA has a requirment to have an ACE softball coach registration to be a coach and play in a national tournament. they do background checks as part of the ACE registration process.

as everyone would be aware, if this is the first charge or offense of any kind, nothing would show up on a background check.

I hope this is not true. If it is true, and at this point, we don't know for sure, but if it is, he's had a lot of other opportunities because this guy has been coaching for a long time.

I hope this is not true.

my heart goes out to the kid who finally stood up to this guy he has had restraining order put on him before for "alledgely" stalking a former player

he needs to be away from kids period

high school you are fingerprinted and everything.......why do you people think he is not coaching in high school????? do the math

backgrounds checks only work if the individual has been caught. No history, nothing on the checks. Also notice the beacon journal also didn't cover it either. He's a staff writer. And he has been charged. Pre-Trial Hearing is this month some time.

This guy has been involved with softball for years. He is well known in the travel ball. I am shocked to hear this, I knew he was an --- on the field but this is really a shocker.

I know they say they do backgound checks. If they change their name or have previous convictions outside the state not always does it show unless you are looking for something. I know for a fact a coach coaching very young kids had previous drug dealings and went to jail. Once he got caught a third time in Stark County, I noticed he wasn't coaching anymore in the area. I guess he was growing it in his home around his kids. He too was coaching softball for an organization of girls 8-10 years of age, it wasn't travel ball. Scary!!!!! You never know.

Who is the "they" that you are referring to? This guy didn't coach school ball. I suppose the parents who joined on with his travel teams could have done background checks if they wanted to

He was coaching with an organization outside the school. It was a community non profit organization. They never use to fingerprint and do background checks, you volunteer and if they needed you, you coached which they are always looking for someone to volunteer. This has been quite a while ago at least 4 years ago, so maybe they finally are doing background checks. It is up to the parents to make sure they do checks and parents need to ask for proof that it was done. Also I would never just drop a young kid off trusting anyone you really don't know.

"Also I would never just drop a young kid off trusting anyone you really don't know."

But parents have been doing this all along. I started coaching when I was 16, and the only time I saw some parents was the cloud of dust when they dropped them off or picked them up.
