I know I'm a complete fool for starting this thread because I know how you clowns react to anything serious. If you plan to react in a typical Yappi way by being silly, nasty, or just downright stupid, please just go away. We don't need more clowns. But if you would like to have an intelligent discussion about something that may interest you, you are welcome to participate.
I would like to know what great and famous people you would like to meet or perhaps someone you have already met.
I have been blessed because of my connections through Holiday on Ice and the Seattle Men's Chorus. I have met dozens of celebrities. But the person who made the greatest impression on me had nothing to do with either of these organizations. He was Jack Dempsey, the greatest boxer who ever lived (at least in my opinion). In 1962 when I was 14, my parents took me to New York. One evening we went to Dempsey's restaurant. The pork chops were superb. Everything about the meal was perfect. Then to make a perfect evening even better, Dempsey himself came over to our table to ask if everything was OK. I thought Dad was going to faint. Dempsey was always one of Dad's heroes and Dad never thought he would meet Dempsey, especially not under these formal conditions. Dad was knowledgeable about boxing from having been an avid fan for many years. Jack was impressed with Dad's knowledge, and they had a long conversation. It was probably the highlight of my Dad's life.
My shock came when I shook hands with Jack. My little 14-year-old hand got totally lost in his. I have never seen hands like his, they were so very big and strong. He could easily have crushed my hand if he had wanted to, but he was very gentle and very gentlemanly. And he treated my mother like a queen. Jack was the most elegant gentleman I have ever met.
I am truly sorry he is gone. I would love to go back to his restaurant and get pork chops and to meet him again.
I know all of you have stories to tell. But for once in our lives, let's make this a thread with no attacks and no abuse. Just tell your stories. All of us will enjoy them.
