Week 5 D1 Polls and Results

Perrysburg girls got a boost this week and snuck ahead of Centerville after winning at Strongsville. And Mas. Jackson stayed ahead of Olen. Orange on the boys side despite getting beat by them last weekend.

Oct 9th we get to see St. X and HD match up again, we'll see how things have changed since their first meeting in early September.

Yes Perrysburg girls and Olen. Orange boys looked great last week, not to be overlooked.

The St. X and HD re-match at Portage might be the biggest matchup of thee regular season. It will tell us a lot about both teams.

There are some great meets this week (and throughout the year) and I do see the value of out of state travel trips. However, I do wish we had a meet in Ohio that attracted top teams from all over the country. It seems as if the top teams are racing out of state more and more.

We have seen Ohio teams dominate this season at the biggest meets in the Midwest.
Michigan State won by Hilliard Davidson
Culver Academies won by Mason
Trinity Invite won by St. X

I believe an Ohio boys team can win Portage then the 4 largest meets in the Midwest will be won by an Ohio boys team for the first time.
Remarkable top 3 teams right now in Ohio. I would love to see Hilliard win the McQuaid Invite too. Put a HUGE stamp on Ohio boys XC this fall.

The Stark County Championship boys race might have been the best team race so far this year:

1. Hoover: 65
2. Louisville: 69
3. Mas. Jackson: 70
4. Mas. Perry: 75
5. GlenOak: 76

That must have been fun to watch.

Mas. Jackson wins the girls race with 27.

20. St. Thomas Aquinas NTS

Blaze Fichter of Hoover won in 15:27. Hoover's injured top 5 runner made his season debut. Without him, they fall to 5th overall. Marlington's #1 ran good but not great, but they kept their spread under 1:00. Jackson's spread was better, but word before the race was their top 2 weren't feeling well which cost them valuable points up front. Louisville's gap from 4 to 5 was over 1:00. That has to improve if they want to compete with the top teams in DI.

I saw St. Thomas Aquinas' lone boy in the race, but he's not listed anywhere in the results. He is the only one they have, but nonetheless... Not sure if they forgot to enter, forgot to pick up their packet, or forgot to put on their bibs/chips/etc.

Apologies. I only clicked on the D1 Boys results and didn’t look any closer. Marlington is an excellent team and deserves their recognition.

With that addition to Hoover’s team, they may be top 5 now.

No worries.

Not sure Hoover's a top 5 team statewide with the return of this runner (he's much handier in a particular track event), but Hoover beat some teams today that they didn't beat without him in previous weeks, so they're clearly better when he races. Today was yet another example though of how a DI team can vault up the standings on a good day or take a tumble down the standings on a bad day.

Part of what makes any county meet fun is it's often 1 of few opportunities during the season for the smaller school runners to take their shot at the big school runners. Also, part of what makes Stark County XC so entertaining is that there are usually a couple non-DI teams each year who can hold their own. AFAIK, Stark County is the most populous county that holds a countywide meet for XC as well as for track, and all the teams in the county attend with very few exceptions through the years. The last time a team flat-out didn't attend the County XC meet was over 25 years ago when 1 of the coaches instead took his team to a meet in the Kansas City area. Incidentally, this was the 54th annual edition of the Stark County XC Meet for the boys. The girls' competition began in 1980.

That was a very impressive performance by Hilliard Davidson, they really closed the gap they had at the back of their pack. If they can keep that up I would put them up there with St. X and Mason.

Mason won in Centerville last night pretty comfortably over a team from Kentucky along with Beavercreek and Centerville.

The Stark County boys race is how I see the state meet shaping up. Not a lot to separate Louisville, Mas. Jackson, GlenOak, etc..., 23 points separating teams 2-6 in that race. And credit to Marlington for beating all of them!

That Centerville meet was way past my bedtime last night.

Yes, Mason boys with a comfortable win it seemed. That race wasn't quite as fast as I thought it was going to be. No Loveland.

In the girls race, Ann Arbor Pioneer from MI won by even more. After that, the Centerville girls came back to just barely beat the Mason girls.

An interesting observation on the Stark results, through 4 runners Louisville was ahead of overall champion Marlington by 12 points, 51-63. It seems that they're just one piece off of being the top team in the county. This also applies if you only score D1 in which they are ahead of D1 champion Hoover by 5 points going into the 5-man. The main question regarding them now is if they can get consistency at the 5 spot considering that same 5 man that ran 17:44 yesterday ran 16:41 at the Wooster Invitational a few weekends ago. It seemed Jackson had an off day as well, their usual top 2 runners didn't run as strong as they have been in previous meets. As stated by some others on here Hoover seems to be a completely different team now that their 800 specialist is back on the course with the team. Should be an interesting district meet in which we'll see all 5 of these state ranked teams battle it out again at GlenOak.

Impeccable timing. I was talking to a girls coach on Sat. whose school’s homecoming dance was on Sat. evening. He said his girls traditionally run poorly the day of the dance.
Easy variable to eliminate. We have gone to a schedule in XC and track and we don't race the weekend of homecoming or prom. No need to try and fight the beast. Let the kids have fun.

Our school went to a small nearby invitational, raced at 9:30 and 10:00 and were back in plenty of time for homecoming. Parade was on Thursday, game was on Friday, and dance was on Saturday.. Seemed to work out well.
Never understood the idea of homecoming activities being mostly for people who are already at home with their parents, although I seem to remember some homecomings in which the school sponsored a dance for alums.

Not necessarily.

My school's homecoming dance often falls on the same day as XC regionals. When I was in school, the dance was often held on the night before Thanksgiving. Eventually, the administration got tired of having it and the winter homecoming dances on school days due to the number of kids who would leave school early for their various appointments to get ready for the dance. AFAIK, there no longer is a winter homecoming dance.
