Football Week 3 Game Preview: Turpin Spartans vs. Walnut Hills Eagles

Game Preview: Turpin Spartans vs. Walnut Hills Eagles
Location: Walnut Hills High School
Previous Year’s Matchup: Turpin 34, Walnut Hills 19

Turpin Spartans (1-1, 1-0 ECC)
The Turpin Spartans rebounded from a tough season-opening loss to Oak Hills with a solid 34-14 victory over Little Miami. Quarterback Devan Nigam has been a bright spot for the Spartans, passing for 765 yards and 7 touchdowns in two games. His favorite targets, Mickey Abbatiello and Max Heis, have combined for nearly 400 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns, making Turpin’s passing game a formidable threat.

On the ground, Turpin has struggled, with their rushing attack averaging just 2.3 yards per carry. Defensively, linebacker Brody Nickerson has been a standout, recording 13 tackles and a sack, while Brandon Riley has also been effective with 11 tackles and 3 for a loss.

Walnut Hills Eagles (1-1, 0-1 ECC)
Walnut Hills opened their season with a strong 30-8 win over Western Hills but struggled against a tough Milford team, falling 38-0. Quarterback Will Rivers has had difficulty finding consistency, completing only 37% of his passes with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. However, running back Ty Austin has been explosive, rushing for 133 yards at 16.6 yards per carry, including a 90-yard touchdown run. Austin is also a key player in the passing game, with a receiving touchdown to his name.

Defensively, Walnut Hills has several playmakers, including Jared Ross, who has recorded 18 total tackles and forced 3 fumbles. Dashon Hoskins and Xander Hargis have also been solid contributors with a combined 28 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Key Matchups:
Devan Nigam vs. Walnut Hills’ Secondary: Nigam has been a highly productive passer, and the Eagles’ secondary, led by Jared Ross, will need to find a way to contain Turpin’s potent aerial attack.

Ty Austin vs. Turpin’s Run Defense: Austin has been Walnut Hills’ most dangerous offensive weapon, and Turpin’s front seven, led by Brody Nickerson, will have to step up to stop him from making big plays.

Editor’s Pick:
Turpin’s balanced offensive attack, led by the combination of Nigam and Abbatiello, gives them an edge over a Walnut Hills team that has struggled to find consistency on offense. Expect Walnut Hills to rely heavily on Ty Austin, but Turpin’s superior passing game should prove too much for the Eagles to handle.

Prediction: Turpin 28, Walnut Hills 14

MVP of the Game:

Prediction vs. Actual:
Prediction: We called for a 28-14 win for Turpin, expecting their balanced offensive attack to be too much for Walnut Hills to handle.

Actual Result: Turpin delivered a dominant performance, winning 30-7, with their defense stepping up even more than anticipated.

What We Got Right:
Turpin's Passing Game: Nigam was excellent, just as we predicted, with 3 touchdown passes. His connection with Max Heis and Mickey Abbatiello was on point, and Turpin’s offense delivered.

Turpin's Defense: We anticipated Turpin’s defense would make life difficult for Walnut Hills, and they delivered, holding the Eagles to just 7 points and under 100 yards of offense.

Where We Were Wrong:
Walnut Hills’ Offense: We expected Walnut Hills to put up more of a fight, but they struggled throughout the game, especially in the passing game where they managed 39 yards. We thought they’d have some success through the air, but Turpin shut them down completely.

Overall, Turpin continues to roll, and their defense was even more stifling than we thought. Walnut Hills will need to regroup and Turpin has the chance to prove themselves as they host Winton Woods this Friday!
