Week 1: Covington Catholic (KY)

Not liking what I’m hearing with possible players being out on the OL. Elder might be able to get by this week, but they’re going to be in big trouble against PC, Eds, and both Xs. CC does have a stud DE being looked at by non P5 schools, I expect he’ll give Elder trouble tomorrow

I may have missed it, but is this game going to be live streamed? I don't think I will be able to make over to the west side this evening for the game.

Reading the bluegrasspreps board, the KY fans aren't giving Cov Cath a chance tonight. Either CC is supposed to be down, or they think Elder is going to be better than they are. I still think this will be closer than everyone thinks, but Elder will pull away late 3rd quarter/4th quarter.

He's already bigger than most nfl safeties at 6'1 215. I think he could be a stud LB with a redshirt year to develop and get up to 225+
at that size, seems like he’d be a great fit for that hybrid OLB/S role a lot of teams use. The viper for Michigan, bullet for OSU, star for a handful of teams.

Covington Catholic at Elder

What to watch:
Another highlight of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown, Covington Catholic will meet Elder on the West Side. The Colonels have won five straight against Cincinnati teams, but they are 0-5 all-time against Elder, with their last meeting coming in 2008. CovCath has won two state titles in four years but will take on an Elder club that went to a state final in 2019 and made the regional semifinals last season.

Elder quarterback Ben Hambleton led the Panthers to 38.2 points per game last season but will face a CovCath team that has allowed 38 points just once over the last four seasons (54-3 in that span). Hambleton threw for 1,915 yards and 19 TDs and will have top target Drew Ramsey, who had 116 catches for 1,395 yards and 13 touchdowns combined over the last two seasons. He also ran for 729 yards and 14 scores last year. The Colonels will have to replace some top statistical leaders. They will be good in the trenches with first-team NKY selections Trevor Wilson and Peyton Dietz coming back. Defensive end Aiden Jones, a junior, had 53 tackles last season. Under center, senior Adam Holtz will compete for the starting job.

Picks: Elder (Springer, Dermer, Weber, Harrison)

I’m not certain how effective he’ll be, but the OL in question appears like he’s going to try to play.

Elder 21
CovCath 0

6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

CovCath has a decent crowd at the game.

CovCath scores on their first drive of the second half but fails on the extra point.

Elder up 21 - 6

Elder scores at the end of the third quarter to make it 28-6...... Time for a glass of bourbon. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

Ramsey will be a handful for everyone. Cov Cath overall didn't play bad, the QB wasn't accurate and the center had bad snaps all night. Ramsey is seriously crazy fast.

CC offense seemed very vanilla.

Still very surprised teams don’t try to make someone other than Ramsey beat them. I’ve only seen that plan from St X and it’s baffling.

I know it’s not as easy as it sounds, but you simply cant guard him with one person - multiple hats need to be on him every play.

Overall, decent game by Elder. Obviously, Ramsey is the story, there’s really not much else to say except he’s unbelievable. Hambleton threw the ball well, and I really liked how Summers ran the ball in the 2nd half. Defense also played pretty well despite a few mistakes. Thomas showed why he’s been a 3 yr starter. I am worried about the health of the OL. They were already a ? and 2 starters got hurt tonight. One had ice on his ankle, but not on crutches. Not sure about the other one. The individual specialists did a good job. Not sure why Dugan didn’t stay into punt after his first punt was pretty decent. Mauer did a really good job on kickoffs, but cvg was bad. I don’t know why Elder struggles so badly on Kick Cvg, but it has to get better.
All in all, Elder played a bit better than I expected, but they desperately need both OL to be healthy for next week.

All I have to say about tonight is what a great night and I was just so happy to be back at the pit on a Friday night with about 7k of my friends. Great crowd.

I don’t think any of us know what tonight means going forward on the field, as CovCath is a bit of an unknown with all they had to replace on offense.

Next week we find out where this team is at.

PC beat Massillon on the road 26-7. I’m not trying to be negative, but I’ll be happy if E can avoid getting a running clock put on them.

I understand that… but let’s take a step back. Tonight was more than just a game. It was incredible just being back in the Pit. I just hope we can make it through the season going to all the games.

I agree and it was nice seeing full student sections on both sides. The kids deserve to have has some fun. I know a year doesn’t seem like a long time to us, but when you’re only in HS for 4 yrs, losing a yr is a big deal.

Amen brother! I truly missed the smell of the grills in the end zone! ?

i think him and trey should go to a game together, and smarty is their uber driver.

Nice way to start out the sesaon. Great atmosphere last night at the Pit. Great job by the cheering section. The game was never really in doubt. I'm not sure how good Cov Cath is? It was a good first game opponent.

Some take aways. The Oline looks smaller than most years. They didn't seem to get the push that a typical Elder line gets.
Ramsey will probably lead the city in touches and all purpose yards.
The Defense was active and opportunistic. I think the Dbs had three picks. The D line is young this year, 1 soph and two juniors starting.

Elder's offence may not be as good as everyone thinks, it's all Hambleton to Ramsey. Maybe that will be enough. The wildcat does not seem to be working, Ramsey needs to pass more often.
The defense may better than everyone thinks. Where did Zack Gutekunst come from, he leads the team in tackles, sacks and interceptions.
What's with the special teams on kickoffs? It's a good thing David Mauer can get the ball in the end zone.
