VASJ’s Elvis Grbac Resigns (Alt: Elvis has left the building)

To clarify, in his own words, Grbac said "I am pursuing a business opportunity that precludes me from giving full attention to my coaching duties," said Grbac in a news release sent by the school. "I'm also continuing to work toward my master's degree in theology from St. Mary's Seminary. I just can't do justice to all these efforts simultaneously." Let's not make it sound like he's leaving coaching to devote himself to the seminary.

.

Bottom line, the program was on the rebound, but not fast enough so they fired Sowers and hired Elvis. In 2 years he won as many football games as his predecessor in the previous 2 years (7). That's not much in the way of improvement.

In his only year as AD/HC their volleyball coach resigned (2 state titles) and Elvis fired their boys basketball coach, Babe Kwasniak (3 state titles) and had police on site to escort him out of the building. Babe is a VASJ alum, West Point Grad, and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. And his family watched him leave this school with cops on either arm.

Elvis moved back to the area after his NFL career, but his son went to Ignatius & daughter to Gilmore. So the leadership of VASJ hired a guy to fix their football program & lead their athletic department who didn't see fit to send his own children there.

Dan Larlham at CVCA would be a PERFECT candidate for this job, but I respect him too much as a coach to think of him working at a place that treats people like this.

It almost seems like Elvis played the role of a Las Vegas Cooler. Things around there were going way to well and the administration or the Diocese were like- hold on this isn't in line with our bigger plans for the school.

Spiros Gonakis,
Kevin Burke,
Spencer Roule,
Kahari Hicks

one of these guys (in my view, this is the order of Joes wish list) will be the next Vikings coach

outside long shots:
Red Kenny, Bob Conroy

Interesting turn, Jeff Rotsky resigned from Euclid. wondering if he will throw his hat in the ring? Only if the diocese doesn’t block the hire if he does apply

VASJ would seem to be a good fit for Rotsky. Seems to be the type of situation he could turn into a winner pretty quickly. Not sure if he's after another D1 job where the competition would be harder and a bigger challenge to get the type of depth you need at that level or if he'd rather have a higher chance at post-season success at a smaller school.

Of course, all of this is contingent on the powers that be at VASJ/the dioceses being on board with bringing Rotsky on. Enrollment seems to be at a good place for the Vikings right now. Not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze for them.

I think with Rotsky’s success on the field, it would make sense especially with his energy. It will bring a new demeanor to the program that has been hungry for consistent success year in and year out. In addition, you’re competing in a very tough re-birthed Crown Conference for years to come, you have numbers for a Frosh, JV, and Varsity squad. It will be a huge hire and will come with criticism, however would be a huge hire. We shall see.

The diocese chased him out in 2001, I highly doubt they have forgotten what happened then and how he reacted to it. It’s just not a good situation for a school that is on the rise. They have stepped up their academic standards and it is showing in increased enrollment. If they take Rotsky they will have to compromise a lot of standards. It is his way or the highway, every administration knows this.

Rotsky's moto is GFGF......God,Family,Grades,Football. He gets kids into college. What standards would VASJ be compromising?

Hiring Rotsky is a no-brainer for VASJ. His players love him and he'd have the Vikings competing for a state title within two years.

If he wants the job at Joes, Joes would be stupid to not hire him. Despite some people would likely want to see an alum at the helm, I say go for it, he has a proven track record of winning year in and year out. As I saw somewhere on another thread, Rotsky could have this team consistently competing with the likes of Lake Catholic, Padua, Ursuline, etc... That would be the idle hire for a program that hasn’t sniffed the Regional Semi’s and further since 2003. If I’m Rich Osborne and Dave Csank, I pull the trigger for the hire.

He would bring in a lot of issues that is not always easy for admin to deal with. If you hire him you have to know his shelf life is about 5-6 years and when he leaves, he does not leave quietly. If your school is building a football factory, he may be your guy, if it’s building a school focused on the wholistic approach, he’s not your guy.

Try to figure out why he left Euclid. He had a program winning and had kids moving into the district to play for him. He had a top 5-6 program in the region so why would he just give it up? These are the questions you have to ask if you’re going to hire him. Why did he leave Cleveland Hts, Maple and Chanel. Ask these questions for you hire him.

5-6 years would be huge for VASJ now. Believe the next one will be their 4th coach in last 6 years.

I worked the chains for a game at Shaker Hts a couple years back. All I can say is that I’ve never heard such foul language directed at kids and other coaches in my entire life. If a private Catholic school wants to put up with this stuff, I don’t know what to say. Effective coaches can get their point across without swearing and screaming like a maniac. Rotsky can’t however.

Mentor,Ignatius and Eds D1 region 1. Move down to D4/5 recruit the crap out Northeast Ohio like he did at Chanel.
Check the JR resigns post, most of the talent at Chanel was there as fresman when he was hired and the rest came from the wrestling program

Dan is not interested!

Does Elvis have any Michigan eligibility left? Or is Chad Henne still there ?{ Those two seemed like they were never going to leave when they played }

The Vikings made a big mistake getting rid of Sowers for Elvis. Glad to have Bill back at Lake as the OC.

This is an important hire for the VASJ football program. Good luck in your search
