URSULINE & MOONEY PROJECTIONS/DISCUSSIONS 2024

I thought we were closer in age, but I think you might have been a good 10 years before me at least. I graduated in '87. My class was ~160, so we were about 700. It did not feel crowded. The old building consolidation (library and some specific rooms) means that the upper bound in the current physical plant isn't 2,000, but the total number of actual students with a CMHS consolidation is like 1,200, yes? That should be doable. Ten years ago I felt like I was being polite when we would talk about it, but now it feels like the maintenance of two schools that are probably 8 minutes away from each other on bus routes seems absurd. I am still going to stand tall on the fact that parochial education is massive benefit to whomever can participate (relative to the local system) so moving sooner than later is the best option for the kids there today. I appreciate watching the athletics as a residual part of my experience, but it's not something I'm going to die on a hill for. But I trust the admin today has the same value they always had, and the more kids we can deliver that to, I'm all for.
I graduated 16 years before you did so I experienced first hand ('67-'68) as a freshman the largest enrollment ever at Ursuline --- 530 or more in the class of '68. That class was born in 1950 --- the pinnacle of the baby boom. I agree whole heartedly that, although I bleed green & gold, it is time to have one Catholic high school in Youngstown and it should be at the Bryson Street site. It will probably keep both historic names like St. Vincent-St. Mary, Villa Angela-St. Joseph, Purcell Marian, Chaminade-Julienne. (Although I like Daniel Shehy High, the first lay Catholic settler among the founders of Youngstown in whose home the 1st mass in Youngstown was celebrated -- on the lower eastside. Or we could go back into our roots with St. Columba High. But it will probably be Cardinal Mooney-Ursuline since the Ursuline site will be used.) The current students would benefit from this merger and their needs must come before anything else.

I think we will see someone else take the reins at QB, but there will be a good amount of wildcat with Ferrell to take the load off of the inexperienced QB. Similar to what we saw in Ericson’s first year. As the season goes on whoever is taking over will get more comfortable

He has and will throw in the wildcat formation

Ursuline opens Thursday August 22 vs. Cuyahoga Falls Wash Jesuit at YSU. WJ was 12-2 last year, both losses to a 13-2 Archbishop Hoban juggernaut. It is the first meeting of the schools, I believe (both of course with very rich histories).
Mooney visits long time rival Mentor Lake Catholic on Friday August 23 which came up short most of the time in their series with Mooney. The Cards gave the Cougars (10-3) one of their three losses in last season's opener (29-26).
Any info about either Walsh or LC in 2024?

This season will be Lake’s best team since the 2010 team that lost to Maple Heights in the Division II Final 4.

We beat them home in 2013 and at WJ in 2014. Great fan base for both. Needed a police escort to leave their campus after the game
Having been involved with Jesuit institutions for over three decades, I can tell you that such an incident would have been met with serious consequences for anyone involved in such profoundly unacceptable behavior.

Sorry I should have clarified. The police escort was due to the heavy amount of foot traffic and cars. Very large crowd. It would of been an extra 30-40 minutes to leave the city if we didn’t have the escort to the highway.

Walsh should be very good at least offensively. They return 7 starters on offense including 3rd team All State QB Keller Moten. Keller threw for 1913 yards and 20 TD last season and ran for 754 yards and 13 TD. Rising senior Lucas Weaver rushed for 1290 yards and 15 TDs. 3 starting linemen return as well. The Warriors averaged 40 points per game last season despite returning only 1 starter from 2022.

Should be an exciting week 1 Thursday night matchup.

Traffic is tough after school, let alone after a game over there. It seems like CVCA had a game at the same time, that had to be crazy getting back to the highway.

It looks like the VASJ vs. Mooney game is on again for week 2. Anyone know why the game was on and off and on again?

Farrell vs. Farrell?
Ferrell vs. Farrell. Thats what threw me off initially. My mind went immediately to the Steelers. I grew up playing Farrell and still work in Farrell. Fun fact people from Farrell don't pronounce it "Fair-ell", they say "Fur-ll". It is all very confusing. Haha

I had family in Sharon and they did pronounce it Fur-ll. That Western PA accent is in Youngstown, too., all the way down to Steubenville. Although I am gone from the Valley nearly 50 years now, when I am really tired I slip into it. Actually I was thinking of DC Farrell vs. the blue & gold Steelers.
