Impressive!!! thats the boy who just committed to Tosu

Thank you, MathKing! With that 8' 2" improvement of Mr. Sanna's previous best, CJ Sanna moves to #4 on the Ohio all-time list and sets a new junior class record, improving the previous best by Justin Welch' 198' 6" (mentioned above). He also becomes the 15th boy to exceed 200 feet in Ohio history.

Below is the current top-30 list.

I note that he also had a back-up throw at 198' 11"

I was mostly busy on details of running the meet, but made sure to get over to watch him throw.

It's incredible how good these young people are at such a young age. He can do 220 before graduation. When I threw 202' 5' at Worthington in 1979, I was a senior.
That throw was later challenged for pit dimensions on the same field that Pete's 199 toss was made but I also had a 201 (5" or 8") right after that throw in a different part of the field in that series that day, but I imagine those things aren't considered. Most record keeping shows that my best junior throw was 186 or so, but I actually threw 195' 1" at the O.C.C sectionals in 1978. C.J's progression is bananas! 196 as a sophomore? 204 as a junior with plenty of meets remaining? Wow!

For the record my 1976-1979 progression was:

1976 (149 and 177' kilo discus)
1977,151
1978, 195' 1" (somewhere evidence exists)
1979, 202" 5".

I live in Memphis, Tennessee and we have a young man, Ashton Hearn, who threw mid 190's as a junior and has done 211 this season so far. I think he's got more on the way.
Let's not even get into a conversation about a 22 year old throwing a world record of 247 feet!

Mr. Washington, thank you for this information and chiming in on this subject. I was in the 8th grade when you threw that at Worthington, and we threw in the same state & regional AAU JO's during that time frame in different age groups (of course). Both your 202' 5" and Pete Miller's 199' 10" (1967) were recognized as "downhill" performances by Track & Field News and other statistical groups at that Worthington facility. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, your 201' 5" throw landing on a different part of the field where the landing area may well have been within slope limits isn't counted in track and field statistics. Given what information you've provided here, I'm going to contact Jack Shepard @ T&F News to ask him about this subject and if they would recognize differences within a given field. My gut tells me they wouldn't or couldn't given the amount of time gone by, but it does raise and interesesting question.

Regarding your 195 ft throw in 1978, I have found several newspaper articles referencing that mark for you, but not the date of the meet or site. I'm sure you've seen the file I posted earlier in this thread regarding the all-time Ohio lists for the boys' discus, and the actual list I have goes down to the 180 foot level. In that list, I am trying to compile all known 190 ft plus meets and all throws over 195 feet where I can find them, so any information you provide here will be followed-up and added as I get meet/date/site information.

Thank you again to Mr. Bruce Washington, Gahanna Lincoln's (1979) two-time state Class AAA discus champion (1978-1979), and one-time Ohio discus record-holder!

P.S. - I'm glad to see you're still following the sport!
