Looking for the first name/grad year of Grega (last name) from Dover Township HS (now part of Westlake) who was one of Ohio's best HS milers of the mid-1920s and won the '26 Class C title at the state meet.

His record at state was:
1925 - Class B Mile - 4th
1926 - Class C Mile - 1st, Class C 880yd - 2nd
1927 - Class C Mile - 2nd

In looking at the Dover-Westlake Hall of Fame, I don't see him listed, so I'm thinking even they don't know about his accomplishments.

Where do you find the Class C records? They are not on the OHSAA website.
Of course they're not on OHSAA's website...I doubt anyone alive at OHSAA even knows that they sponsored a Class C tournament. There are numerous mistakes in the data that they do have there already, particularly for the early state meets.

Regarding the Class C meets, I've collected and am still collecting those results through various newspapers of the 1926-28 years that that division was in effect. I've attached the raw information I have compiled so far here. The Class C county team competitions were in effect as a way to allow the smallest of county schools to have their best compete. All teams were composed of Class B competitors. During those years, the top two Class B teams at their respective district meets could send their entire teams to compete at state, and individuals didn't have to necessarily compete in an event at district in order to do so at state. A number of state champions were made this way. Most Class C team members were made up of those Class B winners at their respective district or county team competitions. I'm still trying to nail down the exact mechanism on how that was all put together.

Anyway, this is the raw data so far in the PDF's below. Names/school info shown in red text are those that I've not 100% confirmed as yet. Here are the team winners for Class C:

1926 - Cuyahoga County
1927 - Montgomery County
1928 - Stark County

100yd dash Swartzlander attended Thompson
880yd Wolfe attended Thompson
Norton of Old Fort set the county meet record at 10'0, don't know how well he did at state or if he even competed
880yd Ensign most likely attended Clyde
Shot Put Baumhardt = David Baumhardt of Vermilion
HJ McLane attended Milan
440yd Hall attended Vermilion

1927
100yd/22yd Meeker attended Milan
440yd it is "Mills" and he attended Milan

Thank you so much for the help! I've known about Mr. Dymond for a number of years now and of his win at the Chicago Interscholastic in 1928. I hope that my little state meet project will help to give visisbility to those champions of the past like Mr. Dymond.

By accident, new search terms yielded an old Archive.org link to a list of Attica HS yearbook that contianed the list of 1880-1965 grads. I was able to find Gordon Shetterly (1926), and several other Attica grads that are in my document. The spelling help on Mr. Shetterly helped tons. That is one of the problems with old newspaper articles - spelling. One has to keep in mind that telecommunications of the 1920s was completely different than today, and I can't tell you how many dozens of hours I've wasted going down rabbit holes of searching for the wrong spelling on a name.

Javman,

Courtesy of the the Westlake Public Library and the 1927 Dover Twp. yearbook, the name you are looking for is Andrew Grega. Quite an athlete, 4 year participant in football, track, and baseball, with 2 years of basketball thrown in as well.

Thank you so much! There were a lot of multi-sport athletes back then.
