Teays Valley Girls Show Grit in 67-35 Loss to Pickerington Central
"Learning Experience: Teays Valley Girls Battle Hard Against OCC Buckeye Division Leading Pickerington Central"
The Teays Valley Girls traveled to Pickerington Central High School on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, to face off against the top-ranked Tigers. Despite a gritty effort, the Vikings ultimately fell 67-35.
Avery Mann led the charge for Teays Valley, scoring 10 points and making herself available for open shots. "Avery's been staying after practice, shooting, and making herself available," said Teays Valley Coach Trevor Younkin. "She's kind of like the quiet storm—you're not going to hear her, even though we want her to speak some more. I just told her to make herself available so she can catch and shoot. She has a nice shot; she doesn’t get a lot of attempts, and tonight she had the opportunity to make herself available, and we found her, and she hit some nice buckets.
Cami Robins followed Mann's performance with 8 points and 1 rebound, while Areyanna Karshner and Tessa Horsley each contributed 6 points. Karshner also dished out 3 assists, and Horsley grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds. Cooper McManaway chipped in 3 points and 2 rebounds, and Amelia Brumfield added 2 points and 1 rebound. Callie Banks also brought down two late rebounds off the bench for the Vikings.
The Pickerington Central Tigers had a balanced attack, with multiple players contributing to their 67-35 victory. London Johnson led the way with 16 points and 3 rebounds, while Zoe Coleman added 14 points and 3 rebounds. Ameera Jenkins was perfect from beyond the arc, hitting all three of her three-point attempts to finish with 9 points. Gabby Plair and Blossom Wallace each chipped in 7 points, with Wallace also grabbing 4 rebounds. Mikailia Asamoah and Kennady Gordon added 6 points apiece, and Annabel Frimpong was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting both of her attempts.
Despite the loss, Coach Younkin was proud of his team's effort and grit. "When you're playing the best team in the conference at their place, all you can do is ask your girls to play hard, and overall, we did that," he said. "I'm happy with our effort, attitude, and grit."
The Teays Valley (4-8, 2-3) will look to bounce back from this loss as they prepare to face Logan (2-8, 0-5) on Friday. "It's going to be a good matchup," said Coach Younkin. "They're going to be coming in hungry, and we need to be ready."
