Lima Senior scored 35 points Friday night against Piqua (remains to be seen how good or bad Piqua is). The rest of the Toledo City Athletic League scored 37 points combined. It's entirely possible that the Spartans will running clock the entire TCAL this fall.

I remember when the city league was competitive…. Sad how bad it is.

For the record, Oak Harbor is NBC; no longer SBC

Week 3, Rogers will make the trip to Whitney Field to take on the Norwalk Truckers

It'll be Home Opener and likely Parents Night

Probably have to go back 20 years to a time when the city schools were beating / competitive with the other area D1 / D2 schools.
The biggest problem is that because they are so big they often cannot compete against schools that are actually at their level of play. Yes, these schools are D2/D3, but they have maybe 30-50 kids out for football a lot of times.

The NLL and SBC teams they regularly play are just going to continually run over them.

Yeah, not quite 20 years, in 2009 Rogers was still very competitive, they went 9-1 with wins over Clay, Anthony Wayne, Northview and Southview (Southview shared the NLL title with Maumee and Anthony Wayne finished 5-2 in the NLL).

I agree when the TCL split from the privates, whitmer and clay after the 2010 season things started to trend downward but I think the last 4 years have gotten terrible. Pre Covid City league teams were still miles ahead of what the current TCL looks like, I can’t help but point to a certain “private” school that happens to be having more success than ever over the same time period…what an odd coincidence.

The true downfall came when they cut sports around 2010… which is when all the non Toledo public schools left the city league and all the talent went elsewhere. They have yet to recover from that.
Yes. The cut of Olympic sports and junior high athletics really hit the city teams hard. I feel covid took it one step further. I remember schools like Woodward were scheduling smaller Toledo area schools back in the 00s and were getting some W's as a result and now those same smaller area schools are beating up on them these days. 20 years ago, all the city teams were still fielding 9th grade teams as well. I'd be curious as to how many field 9th grade or even JV teams anymore.

Start and Scott have had a good season or two in the last ten years. Start went 9-1 back in 2015 and Scott had an 8-2 season in 2022. Bowsher went 8-2 back in 2013 knocking off 3 NLL teams in the first 3 weeks. But aside from some of those "comet seasons" it's been rough.

Not only did city teams have freshman squads until around 2010 they had some outstanding freshman teams in those days. Based on the number of kids playing I doubt anyone has JV other than Start (48) and Bowsher (44). Woodward (21), Rogers (27), I highly doubt and even Waite (33) and Scott (36) seem a bit low to try and have JV teams but they might play a couple games.

Scott in 2022 was ok but their schedule was also extremely weak. 2015 Start and 2013 Bowsher would’ve likely handled them. Heck Bowsher had 2 division 1 athletes at receiver that year if I remember correctly. Like I said, the last few years it’s gotten pretty rough, Covid was the final nail in the coffin imo unfortunately.

Just thinking back I looked at 2018 and Waite beat NV, Maumee and Clay (admittedly they all weren’t great), Scott beat SV and Start beat Swanton and lost by 3 to Clyde, 7 to Bellevue and 14 to Columbian. I’m not sure you could combine all 5 schools today and produce similar results.

Waite a second, you forgot to put NORTH HOOD losing to Rossford. With all of the waite, woodward, and stritch studs coming in they might be lobbying for a TCL spot and say forget playing hopewell loudon and calvert---- give me a side of bowsher with some scott mixed in.

No doubt that was a killer. There are other factors since then that have hampered recovery.

The Rogers team of 2009 was the last legit TCL team. The Start and Bowsher teams sbc mentions were good but not on par with 2009 Rogers. In fact Bowsher could not make the D2 Region 4 playoffs that year finishing 13th (top 8 went).

The split of Whitmer & Clay & The Big Three from the TCL should have only helped the TPS. It gave them an opportunity to win, however, with the gradual expansion of vouchers and open enrollment it is game over. Not only are the schools losing people, when the privates or suburban schools can steal even 4-5 of your top kids (they collectively steal more) it decimates what you can do. It becomes compound interest as each class behind has little incentive to stick around when they can be wooed by better facilities and opportunities. Then you have to find a guy who is willing to be coach/mentor/friend/dad and give up his life for very little pay and reward.

Something tells me there aren't many fans coming from 2 hours away either
I have never traveled it so it takes 2 hours to get from Williams Co? But that drive is only done football and I would guess those teams do bring more fans. But there is a lot more games that the current TAAC teams would play the current TCL would play that isn't football.

Extracurriculars in city schools are in such a pathetic state. It's so sad to see. No matter where you go -Toledo, Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Columbus, Cincinnati- it's all the same

Akron, Cincinnati and Columbus have some schools that competitive in various sports on a yearly basis.

Youngstown only has two schools.

Toledo and Cleveland are the ones that are just currently low all around (minus Glenville)

The elite talent is going to Central and Whitmer and what's left is what's left. The realities of the quality of football being played make that worse every year. Interesting to think about what it would take to really turn things around. Are there any winnable games in the non-league schedule anywhere? I would think most of them would be better off traveling to Columbus or Cleveland to play city schools there than to keep playing NLL and NBC teams.

It is unfortunate they can't get games against D5/D6/D7 schools that are not top tier. Small schools are scared off by their enrollment and lack of ticket revenue. Also with 16 teams making the playoffs in each region there is no need to schedule a TCL school to try and get those big division points.

A scheduling agreement between them and another 7-team conference would be nice for late season non-conference games. They are currently doing that with NLL which in reality is great efficiency-wise, but not competition-wise.

Winnable non-conference games left:
W2 - Rogers v. Springfield
W3 - Start v. Springfield
W3 - Woodward v. Fostoria

Inter-City League Games:
W1 - Woodward 8-28 Cleveland John Adams (Probably Woodward's best shot at a win this year)
W3 - Scott v. Columbus East (Expect East to take this one, they are a playoff team nearly every year)

It is not 2 hours from Toledo to Williams County. The Williams County schools are playing schools that 2+ hours away instead of playing the City League school.

They probably would have been open to it had it not been the addition of Lima Senior.

Edon is facing Margaretta and Richmond Heights
Montpelier is playing Richmond Heights and Ridgemont.
Hilltop is playing Ridgedale

Start can still win 6 games and maybe slide into the 15th or 16th spot in Region 6.

Region 10 is so bad it's entirely possible that Scott could sneak in with a 4-6 record.

Rogers at Norwalk will be Truckers home opener, but also a celebration to Norwalk's 50 year anniversary winning Class AA State Championship when it shocked the world beating Akron St. VINCENT in semi-final then Louisville St. AQUINAS in Title Game
