I have a question for the Ohio guys (and the Texas guys, too, if they have teams on three levels).

In the big Catholic schools (St. Ed's, Moeller, St. X, etc.), and the big Texas schools, how does a particular class move through the program?

Basically, how many freshmen are in the school, how many go out for the team, and how many make it (and how many freshmen make the sophomore team or the varsity)?

And then how many of the freshmen team make the sophomore team the next year, and how many make the varsity?

And then how many of the sophomore team make the varsity?

And do all varsity juniors come back as seniors? Or do some leave (or get cut)?

I know it varies from year to year and from school to school, but please give me a general idea.

Believe it or not, X does not cut in any year or at any level.

Usually 100-110 kids go out for the freshman team (no cuts) and as that class goes on to become sophomores the team will diminish to roughly 80-85 kids because of usually 20 or so kids simply quitting and giving up football for various reasons. The very select few will play on varsity (usually only about 4-5 kids a year) while the rest play Junior Varsity football for that entire year. About 10 kids usually quit after this season for other various reasons. The rest then join the Varsity team usually with the other junior class from the previous years team and that makes up the varsity roster which is approx. 115-125 kids.

Now all of this def can very for each year. For example, X will have their biggest team this year bc of kids not quitting at the usuall rate and even some joining bc of the seasons high expectations. Due to this, X will probably have around 130-135 kids this season (higher than normal).

All in all however it usually works out as I stated above.

Other Questions:

Very few Juniors quit after the season bc, well if you have given all the time and dedication who doesnt want to end their high school career as a senior.

The number of soph. making a varsity team varies dramaticly (sp..?) from school to school.
some dress all of their sophmores. (I think colerain does this in the playoffs) while others dress only a few (X only dressed 4 or 5 in the playoffs last year).

Football is a "no-cut" sport in Texas. Every guy who wants to play is allowed on a team. If the kid is a senior he will be on varsity regardless of how good he is.

At SLC about 450 kids came out for football in 2006. The 450 kids are placed on 5 different teams (Varsity, 2 JV teams, 2 Freshman teams).

The varsity roster has about 80-85. I'm not sure of the size of the other rosters.

A few miscellaneous points:

1. The philosophy for non-seniors at SLC is that unless a kid can solidly contribute to the varsity he is left on a JV team where he has a better opportunity to play/develop. Consequently there are some very good players on the JV teams.

2. SLC requires the JV and Freshman teams to keep practicing as long as the varsity is still alive in the playoffs. Since the varsity has played 6 additional weeks of playoff games for the last few years, it allows a large amount of extra football for the other teams even though their seasons have ended.

3. In 2006 the 5 football teams lost one game between them. One of the teams lost to Trinity.

I heard that Trinity had over 600 kids playing football. That number seems high but that's what I heard.

Texas High claims about 300 report for 2 a days and start the season with about 270 kids. The school had an enrollment at the last realignment of 1709 and approximately 850 boys. The 270 is broken out as follows:

Seniors - 30
Juniors - 60
Sophmores - 75
Freshman - 105

All the Seniors are on Varsity whether they play or not. I would guess there are approximately 25 juniors and 5 sophmores. A sophmore to me on Varsity will get significant playing time. It is rare to have a freshman on Varsity. Ryan Mallett was on Varsity as a freshman only when the Senior QB was out. Otherwise he played sub-varsity.

The remaining 105 juniors and sophmores comprise two junior varsity teams and the 105 Freshman comprise 3 Freshman Teams. Most 4A schools in East Texas have JV and two Freshman teams. The JV "B" and Freshman "C" usually play fewer games as the coaches struggle to find them games.

This is a large 4A program in Texas. I would guess the normal number of boys out for football is 200 at the 4A level.

As of now St. X has 156 kids that will suit for varsity. Coach Specht plans on making Two - A - Days and Night Camp harder to get some of the band wagon kids to quit. Hes also added on a few days of "Day Camp" and is considering Three - A - Days.
