Looking through the entries on swimmeet.com and it is hard to predict who is going to win what as times are all over the place and of course are from tapered times either this year or last with the suits on.

Who wins the relays?

My Predictions:
400 Medley - Wyoming
200 Medley - Wyoming
200 Free - X
400 Free - X

Others in consideration for relays are Centerville (but no Schiemann hurts them in the Medleys), Loveland and Moeller (the free relays mainly).

Also looking forward to the duels between Perkins and Miller in the distance free events.

Expect X to win all the relays. Word in the stands at Ned Reeb was the Schieman will not be out long. Don't know when he injured his ankle but he is entered in the Classic. It may be that the entries were made before the injury happened.

I don't know about expecting them to win, they stand a good chance but there will be some other competition and fairly strong competition at that. Also, it seems like x is still finalizing their relays as there has been a fair amount of changing lineups and such.

It will be interesting to see how Centerville rebounds from an awful showing at Ned Reeb. When they are at their best, they can compete with the best in the state. I would still give the edge to St. X though. They are deeper when it comes to the distance events (Miller, Lawley, Tontillo, etc.) and I expect those to be the events that this meet is won in.
As for relays, if St. X loses one, it is going to be the 400 free relay. It doesn't seem like they've settled on who to put in it. Since Shieman isn't on this relay anyway, I'd call Centerville the favorite to win this one. I would put Wyoming as a potential winner of the 400 medley, but St. X should win the other two relays.

I think it is pretty obvious that X will win the team title.

Can anyone confirm that it was Schieman's ankle that he hurt? It will be good for cville if he is back, but a hurt ankle makes fly and breast a little difficult.

what happened to schiemen's ankle? did he break it or is it sprained? cuz i experienced a sprained ankle over the summer and it took a good four weeks to be at a 90-95%.

did alex osterhage not beat lawley at big8, and alex went a 4:42 at makos without a suit and not fully tapered

Osterhage barely beat Lawley, and even still, Centerville is not better than St. X at distance freestyle. Miller is #1 in the state, Tontillo recorded 4:46 last week, and they have three or four other guys in the 4:50 range. The 200 free is even more lopsided. Centerville just can't match it.

Just a sprain from my information and he is entered this weekend and expects to be able to swim.

Zing!

Now only if I could make other sports predictions like that on those relays.

Zimmerman was very impressive in all 4 of his swims. I was impressed he held on in the 400 IM during the breaststroke.

Some impressive relays from teams at this point of the year. Dayton Oakwood had some good swims and will be some competition for Wyoming in the D2 District but I think Wyoming will have the depth. I also heard somebody in the stands saying that the Fairfield relays were made up of Juniors (they looked like Fairfield parents). If that is true they look to be pretty strong this year and especially next year. Anybody know where those boys train?

Predictions for the District Meet:
1 - St. X
2 - Centerville
3 - Moeller

Overall finals were a lot of fun watching those fast swims.

Zimmerman really stood out at this meet. He won all four events (100/200 back, 200/400 IM), swam the top time in the state this season in the 100 back (50.41) which was also the fourth fastest all-time at this meet, just ahead of Nick Thoman. His 1:49.40 200 back was second all-time at this meet.

Another bright spot and something of a surpise were the 100/200 free swims by Dan Schmitz. 46.71 and 1:41.94 are both state best so far this season.

On the girls' side, Danielle Jansen of Mason had three first and one second place finish along with all four relay victories. She put her name on the all-time top 10 list in seven different events: 50/100/200/500 free, 100 fly/breast, 200IM. Her breaststroke time of 1:05.36 was fifth fastest all-time and is something she is not necessarily known for. The finals race had four girls under 1:06, which coincidentally, is the time that took fifth place in D1 at the state meet last year.

But most of the meet seemed to feature matchups or expected finishes that never happened. With Miller, Perkins and Vigar returning in the distance events, Hines/Murphy/Schiemann in the fly, Lipari/Profitt/Schieman in the breaststroke, the meet had all kinds of promise of close finishes and potential top-ten swims. In '09, sixteen new entries were added to the all-time honor roll. '10 added only eight, with five recorded between Zimmerman and Schmitz.

Earlier in the year, Wyoming thought they would finish 1-2 in the 50-free. Instead, it was Brandon Williams and Brad Hines at the top, with Wyoming finishing 4-10. In the 200, Miller and Perkins chose other events and Vigar did not do well enough in prelims to make the final heat. So 1-2 went to Schmitz and Williams with a surpise third place finish by freshman Josh Quallen from Wilmington. The Miller/Perkins/Vigar race in the 500 actually turned out to be a race between Miller and Bryan Bedacht of Summit Country Day, with all three favorites swimming slower than last year. The 1650 didn't turn out to be a close race either, with Miller lapping Perkins, and Brogan Dulle finishing in second, over twenty seconds behind Miller.

Zimmerman lived up to promise in the 100/200 backstroke, but it wasn't a close race after the first 50, as he was ahead of the field by about a second at that point in both races. He finished 2.5 and 4.5 seconds ahead of second place. The IM's were closer, with Quallen only 2 seconds behind at the finish of the 200. Lipari was about even after the breaststroke leg of the 400, but Zimmerman pulled ahead in the freestyle to finish 0.7 seconds ahead.

The anticipated showdown in the fly may have been the biggest letdown. The best finish by the big 3 names was eighth place. Freshman Quallen won the race, followed by sophomore Beau Robinson of Milford. Lawson won the 200 with Dulle and Quallen finishing 2-3. In the 100 breaststroke, Profitt was the only one to make top-5. And while Lipari managed to hold on to win the 200, one has to wonder if he was healthy. His times last season were :59/2:07 compared to 1:01/2:10 this year.

Top male scorers for the meet were 80-Zimmerman 71-Miller/Schmitz 69-Quallen (an excellent performance for the freshman).

to BigSwimFan

fairfields medley is all juniors and the free has only one senior. they train with Greater Miami Valley YMCA. the coach there is also the fairfield high school coach.

Schieman swam a 56 in the 100 fly and on relays. Clearly he's hurt. Hopefully, he will not jeopardize his future by trying to come back too soon.

Zimmerman had a fantastic meet. Although I do think he somewhat rested for this meet. I do think he will definately give Whitaker and Meisner a race for that backstroke. It should be exciting with only a couple more weeks to go before state. Anyone have early predictions?

Thanks for letting me know SwimmerMan. I know its well known (or at least it should be) that most High School kids that were at finals swim for a club team and the high school coach just enters them and don't really coach them much (as seen by the number of coaches sitting on the side as the majority of kids that warm up). Another reason why Brower at St. X is a great coach as he is one of the few that coaches his athletes the entire time during the season.

Zimmerman like some of the other Countryside YMCA kids had some really good swims so they may have been rested for this meet. Is Little Miami D1 or D2. I don't think he has any problem winning State in whichever division they are in unless something unforseen happens (i.e. illness or injury).

OH NO!!! People are playing the "rest card" again. BTW, the first state swim event is on Friday Feb 26 which is over five weeks away.

The "rest card" was played a lot last season when Moeller, Oak Hills, Wyoming, had such impressive swims compared to St X's relays. At least this season, there should not be much discussion over who wore a body suit versus who did not. One comment was something like "well, then if Moeller did not rest, then we should see some impressive drops and times at the state meet." Just for reference here are some classic times compared to times at state finals last season:

classic state delta delta%
100 freestyle
47.32 46.55 0.77 1.63% Sanders
47.34 46.75 0.59 1.25% Krone
47.58 46.00 1.58 3.32% Lawley
47.69 47.52 0.17 0.04% Schwab
48.84 47.75 1.09 2.23% Louis
48.12 45.60 2.52 5.24% Schnur

400 relay
3:09.14 3:05.87 3.27 1.73% Moeller
3:13.11 3:13.26 -0.15 ------ Wyoming
3:15.60 3:05.04 10.54 5.39% St. Xavier
200 relay
1:26.43 1:24.67 1.76 2.04% Moeller
1:27.56 1:24.55 3.01 3.44% Oak Hills
-:--.-- 1:23.61 St. Xavier
200 medley
1:36.68 1:35.76 0.92 0.95% Wyoming
1:37.17 1:35.97 1.20 1.23% Moeller
1:37.65 1:35.05 2.60 2.66% St. Xavier
1:39.19 1:37.67 1.52 1.53% Oak Hills

Unfortunately, St X changed the entire lineup in the medley between classic and state, and their 200 relay was DQ'd at classic finals, so those particular comparisons are not valid.

If Zimmerman was rested, I assume he was not fully shaved and tapered. Therefore, he should still have some room to drop at state. Even a repeat 50.41 should easily qualify for finals. A 1% time drop of 0.5s seems well within reason. So much is dependent on staying healthy.

With regard to Zimmerman and Countryside resting I can say a few things. First understand I do not say this because I think it, or I heard it, I say this because I know it firsthand.

CY had a regular week of practice including doubles on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and weights and dryland every day. They went 2 hours Friday night.

The issue of who rested always follows a great mid season swim. Who knows, maybe some rest, maybe some don't, maybe it depends on your definition of rest. In any event the above schedule does not meet my personal definition of rest. However, opinions vary.

One thing about rest is that you would expect that "accusation" if you will to more likely follow unexpected swims. I don't think the same applies to Zimmerman.

The same thing was said last year when he went 1:50 200 Back at Classic. He then went 1:47 on a second taper in April at Y Nationals. Further 1:49 is two seconds off his ltb which seems to me to be in line for what you would expect from a mid season swim on a big stage with an exciting atmosphere.

Further, he went 50 point 100 Back at Juniors in December so he has shown the ability.

Finally, CY is not a fly by night club and Brad Isham is one of the more respected coaches in SW Ohio. CY has a pretty impressive history of swimming and specifically backstrokers (Blohm, French, Barbiere). Isham has a string of something like 8 straight years of having a high school state champion. I highly doubt a coach of that level is going to rest a kid for Classic who has a legitimate shot at a state championship with a month to go.

CY did have a good weekend but they also had poor swims. Biedenharn, sans the swim off. McDowell's prelim swims. Lawson swam well but he has been 1:52 200 fly before so it's not like that came out of nowhere.

As a post script Little Miami is D1.

are you sure little miami was d2 last year. did that change?

do you have zimmerman's times from last years classic to state champs? maybe you could make up a percentage for him?

I think a realistic prediction for Zimmerman would be to half his percentage drop from '09 Classic to '09 State with the percentage drop from '09 State to '09 Y Nationals.

'09 Y Nationals
100 Back- 50.10 (relay) 1.8 percent
200 IM- 1:55.71 0.6 percent

So 1.9 percent for both

That puts him at:

100 Back 49.45
200 IM 1:52.24

I think those are realistc swims.

Biggest surprises from classic? Relay splits or individual times...

And, most exciting races? Again relays, legs of relays or individuals...
