Sports Illustrated/Top High Schools

Actually, 2006 was a slightly down year for SLC overall. The football team and the cross country team won state and there were a few winners on the track but SLC is traditionally strong in baseball, softball, golf, swiming, etc. None of those other teams advanced as far as they usually do. They all made the playoffs and advanced a couple of rounds but none advanced to the final 4 in state. SLC tied for 6th in the Lone Star Cup which is an all sports award that includes band, drama, academics, etc. SLC has been 1-3 in the cup standings every year since the cup was started.

Texas has the Lone Star Cup which combines all UIL competitions - both athletic and academic (Boys & Girls)

1.* Plano West 92
Humble Kingwood 92

6. Houston Cypress Fairbanks 78
Southlake Carroll 78
8. Katy Cinco Ranch 60
9. San Antonio Churchill 59
10. San Antonio Reagan 58

Won tie-break. Plano West has won state championships in Team Tennis and Girls Soccer, Humble Kingwood was state champion in Boys Swimming.

1. Dallas Highland Park 92
2. Friendswood 84
3. Aledo 70
4. Brenham 64

As you can see from the list above, the winners in 4A and 5A each had 92 points. The record for highest points EVER was awarded to SLC in 2000-01 when then earned 136 points. The following year, 2001-02, SLC broke their own record with 150 points. SLC was 4A at the time. Highland Park had won the cup every year before SLC set the records. SLC then moved up to 5A and Highland Park has won the 4A cup every year since. No doubt they were glad SLC moved up.

By My count Texas had 1 school
Florida 1 school
Ohio zero

and California had THREE

and that did not even include DLS which I bet (despite being handicapped with no girls athletics) in most years would be a strong candidate

Look a bit closer, it said Hillard Davidson is the best athletic program in ohio, this just tells me that this ranking is complete bull pooey

That is why I posted the Lone Star Cup. While it includes academics, the schools on the above list are strong in both academics and athletics.

As hard as it is to compare the strength of football teams from different parts of the country, it is even harder to compare overall athletic departments. I think you can only compare the following sports on paper as to strength:

Track
Swim
Power Lifting

Every other sport has subjective variables. For example, Golf is influenced by the course the scores were achieved. Cross Country is influenced by the course run.

I think the ranking is pretty much a list of schools that had a stand out season in one sport and did fairly well in a couple of others.

It's not even close to an "all-sports" ranking or a ranking of schools with the best athletic programs as it claims. It's pretty shallow.

Where did you see the criteria?

1) Success on and off the field (squishy criterion)

2) State championships

3) Division I scholarship athletes

I would be interested to see how they compiled their information. One thing is certain, Hilliard Davidson in Ohio is certainly NOT our top athletic program. Not even remotely close.

The Big Catholics are clearly the front-runners. Between St. Edward, St. Ignatius, St. Xavier, Elder, Moeller and LaSalle you've had:

- Football: A state football title just about every other year. Two or three of these schools are considered front-runners in any given year for the title. Loads of national rankings.

- Hoops: 6 of the last 10 D1 titles. Three of the final four were Big Catholics.

- Baseball: 6 of the last 10 D1 titles. I believe two of the final four were Big Catholics.

- Wrestling: Owned by St. Edward for decades. A national power with multiple national titles.

- Swimming: Owned by St. Xavier for decades. A national power with multiple national titles.

Just with the GCL South, there are 24 State titles since the 2000-2001 school year. They include 3 football, 3 baseball, 2 basketball, 6 swimming, 4 cross country, 2 tennis and 4 volleyball titles. Eds and Iggy would add even more. And these schools are all-boys. Roughly half the titles possible are not even available them.

As regards success off the field, all these schools are academically good. Iggy and X usually top the state in national merit scholars. All are highly involved in their communities (food drives, tutoring, Big Brothers) and they send their students on to college at a rate in the 90%+ range.

From the John Curtis profile...

Ashley Brignac surrendered just 14 hits all year and threw 18 no-hitters. She went 25-0 on the season with a 0.00 ERA with 421 strikeouts in 159.2 innings pitched to help lead the Patriots to the Class 2A state title. She also hit .500 with six homers while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and was co-valedictorian of her class.

This may be the most dominant athletic season I have ever seen.

I agree this was a dominate performance, but you understand John Curtis is in the second smallest classification in Louisiana (2A). I question how they could compete in Southern California.

Does George Steinbrenner know about her? Perhaps we should call him.

I agree the young lady's season is amazing. But the premise of the article was that a coed school with 380 enrollment is the #6 athletic program in the country. They may very well be the best "small school" in America. I bring up Southern Cal for softball as historically the area seems to be the cream of girls softball. I think this young lady may very well be one of the top softball pitchers in the country.

As a graduate of the University of Texas, I hold the Texas softball program as an example. They had a dominate pitcher in Cat Osterman but not necessarily a top program. When Cat pitched for them they competed for the national championship. When Cat took a year off for the National Team and since she retired, Texas has been an average program (that is hard to admit). In no sport can one person dominate like a softball pitcher. They can pitch 15 innings one day and turn around a pitch the next day. I see the ranking of a "Program" based on the success of one person to be a bit skewed.

and florida has the same exact thing. As most likly every other state. This is just hyping up the match up because, anyone who has a clue about high school sports knows that St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the top, if not the top all around high school program in the country. So wait a school wins 4 straight football titles and that makes them a top overall program. Not bashing Warren Central, I just dont see how that = OVERALL program. Bolles or Sta should have been on that list. Heck bolles was on it last year and they did more this year and did not make it?????????? Both are stides above Northwestern.
