We have some pretty good stuff this year.

1. X/MNW/DLS, some will throw in Katy. Should be a pretty good 3-way.
2. Will SLC rebound?
3. Redistricitng in TX, any big shakeups? SLC/Trinity in the same district?
4. Herbie '08 Who will be playing?
5. DLS travel game, unless I missed it I am not aware of it being announced.

Any other good ones?

In Texas we are shut down until the redistricting is completed. My understanding the coaches can tentatively schedule games but cannot sign any contracts until redistricting is completed in late February (after appeals are heard). Just twittle our thumbs until the redistricting is complete.

On the NJ forum some of the guys are claiming that Bosco is trying to bring DLS to NJ to play next year.

DLS tried to come to NJ in 2003

On the NJ forum some of the guys are claiming that Bosco is trying to bring DLS to NJ to play next year.

when Don Bosco was #2 and they were #1. Petty jealousy and politics in Jersey killed it. The other big time football schools didn't want Bosco grabbing the #1 slot because they thought it woudl make it harder for them to attract good players. Things have changed there now with the publics trying to throw all the Catholic schools out of their leagues.

Although both schools are trying hard, it looks like DLS v. Bosco probably wont happen because DLS needs $ to travel and Bosco is already footing bill to travel and play X. Thats the general state of the rumor mill now.

I don't follow Illinois football much.

I pretty much follow nationally-ranked teams in Ohio, Florida, Texas, and California.

The news from here that I find most interesting is Lincoln-Way going from two schools (and the second one only opened within the last ten years, at most) to three next year, and four the year after that (I may be a year or so off on the dates).

Illinois 8A only has 65 teams or so. And Lincon-Way East is pretty good (as high as #10 USA Today in 2006), so that could make a difference in how things play out.

And Chicago St. Rita is in next year's Herbie (with all the usual Evangel Christian caveats and such).

It's good to see St.Rita will be playing in the Herbie...Can't wait to watch them play!

And the retaking of the dynasty back by lakeland next year should be fun to watch. I think it will again come down to lakeland and sta in the 5a final for the 4 time in 5 years.

fuel to the fire lakeland beat st.x in the herbie its last title run. STA going to the herbie with what should be a #1 ranking in the state.

And an oss event like the herbie is supposed to happen in West Virginia. The difference is from my understanding is that teams will be brought in to play each other. So Ohio team vs. Florida team and so one. Lakeland is supposed to make the trip to take on an Ohio power. Things are very early in the works.

That sounds ungodly expensive. Having to pay for the long-distance travel costs for one team per game is bad enough for the Herbie to "finance."

I can't see how you could do it for two teams, and also forgo the benefit of at least a significant number of one team's fans showing up to buy tickets. If the Herbie has been a money loser thus far, that would have to be an Enron-like financial disaster waiting to happen.

Are enrollment cut-offs an issue?

Or just how the particular classes get broken up into districts?

Both, rumor has the 5A cutoff at 2050-2100. A good gague is to take Highland Park's enrollment and add 10 and that will be the 5A cutoff.

Well Texas should be testing for steroids this school year.

For the record, I find this to be a pretty big waste of money.

As far as the off season in TX, big news now is becoming the bi-annual realignment.

Wouldn't that also include testing for drugs and other substances a student-athlete should not have in his body??

If it is considered drug testing... the decrease in insurance costs (Drug testing offers huge breaks in insurance premiums) should pretty much pay for itself in a few years.

You might think so, I am not too optimistic. Here is an excerpt from an article about the methods and anticipated results.

The $6 million, two-year experiment will reach less than 3 percent of the state's 750,000 high school athletes each year – all in a search for the estimated 2 percent of Texas students believed to use steroids.

The short history of steroid testing in public schools has yielded little, if anything. In the handful of local school districts that already test for steroids, no positive test has been reported. The same is true for limited state programs in Florida and New Jersey.

.....

Some critics also question the state's policy decision to go after steroids when the use of other illegal drugs, including marijuana, heroin and prescription drugs, is far more common among teenagers. The state's steroid tests will cost up to $140 each, compared with $15 for most other drug tests.
