Russia ends Houston's 37-game SCL win streak - Sidney Daily News

The streak is over, and as far as records go, it's one that will likely last a long while.

The Houston Lady Wildcats were upset 2-1 by County rival Russia Thursday, and it ended an amazing 37-game Shelby County League winning streak for coach Brent New's squad.

New has built a true dynasty in softball at Houston, and even with the loss, the Lady Wildcats are still alone in first place as they eye the school's eighth consecutive County softball championship.

The win by Russia made a lot of things right for coach Roger Hammonds and his squad.

"It was one time things went our way," Hammonds said. "It was pretty emotional. This is probably the biggest win ever for these girls, and there were a lot of tears when it was over."

The Lady Raiders definitely earned it because Houston kept the pressure on throughout.

Jaclyn Willoughby doubled to open the game and later scored on a single by Danyelle Delligatta for a 1-0 lead in the first.

That was all Russia ace Katelyn Herron would allow the Lady Wildcats, but she had to work her way out of two bases-loaded, one-out jams to protect a slim one-run lead.

Houston had runners at second and third with nobody out in the third. Herron struck out the next hitter, but then a walk loaded them up. But she fanned the next batter and got a ground out for the final out to keep Houston off the board.

One inning later, she was again put to the test when a walk, a fielder's choice on which all hands were safe, and a single loaded the bases with one out. The ever-dangerous Willoughby came to the plate, but Herron got her to pop to shortstop on a changeup. The next hitter then popped to second and again Russia escaped any damage.

The Lady Raiders got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the second.

Jessie Zumberger singled and Herron reached when the throw to first on her bunt was dropped. A stolen base put runners at second and third, and a passed ball scored Zumberger to tie the game up.

Taylor Rittenhouse then walked and intentionally got herself caught in a rundown between first and second. Pinch-runner Alexa Counts was able to score from third on the play for a 2-1 lead.

Herron finished with six strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

Losing pitcher Danielle Monnier also pitched well enough to win, striking out eight and allowing just four hits.

Houston is now 6-1 in County play and 14-4 overall. Russia is 6-2 and 9-11.
