Today is Roberto Clemente Day in MLB. A great person thats for sure.

I saw the last game that Roberto played in the majors. It was the fifth and game of the 1972 playoffs between the defending World Champio Pittsburgh Pirates They playeD Cincinnati and lost when Pirate pitcher Bob Moose threw a wild pitch and George Foster scored to give the Reds a victory. AS Reds fans celebrated, I watched Roberto walk off the field with his head up high. There were rumor that Clemente might retire. But no he dies in a plane crash on New Years Eve giving supplliesw to earthquake victims in Nicaurauga.

God bless # 21

Hey, I remember that game.....Al Michaels call on WLW of Johnny Bench's home run to tie it up in the ninth is legendary "Clemente's at the wall, he looks up, it's gone!". I can still see Hal McRae jumping up and down as Foster crossed home plate to win the pennant. Of course that was the early days of the Big Red Machine and the Reds were in the NLCS 6 times in the 70's, but game 5 of the 72 NLCS was special......

I was returning from football practice with some teammates and we were listening to the game on the radio. Still remember that moment ( I assume it was Pirates Bob Prince announcing the game on KDKA) WILD PITCH! Damn

Clemente was delivering supplies to Nicaragua after an earthquake. He became aware that the supplies delivered were being stolen by the crooked government regime so he decided he would collect supplies himself and fly them down so he could make sure the poor people received them. Sadly, his plane was overloaded and never got more than a few hundred feet off the ground before plunging into the ocean.
Yes, he was a true man!
