Rob Lowe is reporting that Peyton Manning will retire

recently

Cooling Off
Okay...since when is Rob Lowe an NFL expert/insider? This was on Twitter about an hour ago and now it's getting attention from other NFL insiders.

Wtf? I bet it's fake, but a few people are reacting as if it's legit.

Wouldn't surprise me if he does, IMO. Neck injuries are obviously very tricky. He may not want to to risk his life or health. Though if he does retire, I would imagine it would be after training camp, etc so that way he can collect his $28 million and so he can help coach up Luck.

Maybe for the $28 million but not to "coach" Luck. It is obvious that Manning doesn't want Indy to draft him and Luck doesn't want to play under him either. When he was asked the question after losing in his final game with Stanford you could tell he did not like the idea at all.

Obviously, a best case scenario would be for Indy to have Manning mentor Luck but I just don't see that happening. The Colts are kind of setting themselves up to let Manning go with the firing of the GM (who drafted him) and Caldwell.

IMO, I think it would be a mutual agreement type thing. The Colts keep him and pay him the $28 million for everything he's done for them and for coaching/mentoring Luck and in turn he coaches/mentors Luck.

Fyi, this is all just total speculation and wishful thinking. Doubt it plays out this way.

Irsay's response to the rumor...

My sources tell me Rob will star in an epic remake of "Deep Throat" with aging porn stars and 4 finger circus clowns!

that's what their front office called the $20 million signing bonus they gave him for his new contract in July, knowing there was a chance he wouldn't play this year. Not to mention the other $6.4 million he got this year.

You don't think they thought he might be able to play?

It wouldn't surprise me, but I wouldnt trust Rob Lowe.
I said at the beginning of this Peyton thing that I thought he would be done for his career.
We shall see.

of course they did. I said they knew "there was a chance" that he wouldn't play, not that they knew he wouldn't play.

It was a horribly structured contract by the Colts.

So they should have paid him less money, with the possibility of him playing? You think that would have sat well with him?

Agreed. I'd be surprised if Manning is playing for the Colts next year.

I think they should have made a deal that even remotely made sense.

He was due $54.4 million in the first 8 months of the deal, a deal he signed while recovering from a serious neck injury. It was a dumb deal. Particularly the $28 million roster bonus he gets in 2 months.

What would you have done?

I would have paid the man who was the single most important player on any team in the NFL, thinking he would be playing.

take it from dr hoffy --peyton mannings injury is severe --in fact , even if he tried to play ,aside of the huige risk of being hurt "purm -mu -ment" as Mickey said to Rocky , he will no longer have the strength to throw the football with enough zip in the NFL ---i.e. his arm strength will make colt mccoy's look like john elway's --- manning has fused vertebrae now and any nerve damage further could paralyze him if he gets hit in the right ( or wrong) way--- so , if peyton is a smart lad he will be sitting in the studio next season yucking it up with Terry and Howie and Double J ---- end of story no matter what he says in interviews the rest of the way ---dr .hof

Interesting...

Peyton Manning medically cleared to resume NFL career, per sources. More coming on ESPN now. # NFL32

I'm starting to lean toward the Dolphins or Titans IF the nerves regenerate. If they don't, his arm will be more useless than Colt McCoy's.
