RIP CatAlum

Prayers to his family and especially his children today on Father’s Day. About a week ago, I noticed that he had been absent recently. He specifically did not care for me or my posts but this is still sad news to read today. May God keep his soul and help his family and friends deal with this loss.

Had a lot of discussions with him via PM and on the board. We saw eye to eye on some things and not at all on others, but I always enjoyed the debates and discussions. He could be thought provoking and defended his views fiercely. We definitely had a Roman Catholic common ground. In fact, I should have known something was wrong when I sent him a PM a few weeks ago seeking his opinion on a controversial local event involving the Church and he didn’t respond…which was very unlike him.

RIP

RIP Cat, he didn’t lean exclusively in one direction, and whether you agreed with him or not, you knew he put a lot of thought into his posts.

He was very knowledgeable about scripture, and often caused me to reconsider my typical strong protestant point of view. Very knowledgeable about law, I assume he had been in the legal profession?

His time spent on the debate was helpful in many ways.

Well this stinks. Yesterday was a really rough day for me, also lost a Benny teammate.

I talked to him for over 20 years here and we developed a close online friendship. Cut from similar cloth, purple-ish Catholics from Cuyahoga County that could be either a moderate Dem or a moderate Rep. Sometimes we jousted, mostly over Benny & Iggy related topics, but for the most part agreed on much outside of that. One thing that had me thinking last night is how we are starting to lose some old timers that have been here for some time, glad Irish posted the OB as while I scan them I would not think to look for that name. I still had 3 conversations open from him and was starting to wonder if I would ever hear again. I guess this answers the question.

A few more points to complete the bio, (please correct if anyone knows the info to be different,):

  • Grew up in the North Collinwood neighborhood of CLE, dad was a Cathedral Latin guy but he ended up at St. Ignatius. Don't think he played football but maybe basketball, not sure.
  • Was an above average student and went to Kenyon College where graduated a proud alum, as a Denison grad we did have some fun back and forth on this.
  • Got a law degree and went to work for the County as a prosecutor. After a run there ended up on the other side as a criminal defense attorney. Knew a lot about the workings at the Justice center and his interaction with his clients and their families framed much of the views that you saw on the debate forum. He had a lot of sympathy for the conditions many of his clients were involved with that lead to their life choices.
  • Practicing Catholic that didn't always agree with the decisions of our church. Preferred a less orthodox version that was centered around each person's beliefs and less about the idea of a "church".
Eternal rest, grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the soul of the faithful departed
through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Excellent post.

This one bothered me as well for the same reasons. I did not know Cat as long but we did have plenty of PMs and I got to know him fairly well. His obit did not do him justice. On top of your bio points he and his wife were both attorney's and I believe practiced together. He was proud of his kids. His son played on the 08' Iggy title team and his daughters were excellent rowers. And of course as anyone who ever interacted with him knows, he was proud of all things Irish, Catholic, and law.

Mostly, however, he had a very unique thought process. I learned from him and he forced me to rethink some of my positions. I did not agree with him on everything but he was intelligent and thoughtful. He will certainly be missed around here.

Yeah, wow, that sucks. I missed this in real time and I agree with all that you say.

That's not near enough time, 65 yrs. I did note his recent absence over on the insensitive side of Yappi, but I figured he was just busy.

I was really hoping that I could fix CA's political leanings after Trump left the scene. I had hope, smug liberal or not. He usually meant well unless one really got under his skin.

I sure hope that CA can somehow see that I got the last shot in there. Also that I will admit one more time that he was right about LeBron and his actual value to CLE, and that I still agree the college basketball fan experience is far superior because the games are genuine competitions.

RIP, my idealistic institutionalist friend.

I always suspected that his adventures into pro bono defense were probably on the heavy side, compared to most.
