High school softball: Tournament veterans return
Wednesday, May 26, 2010 2:54 AM
By Steve Blackledge

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Many of the top high school softball programs beef up their schedules so they can simulate the feel of tournament play.

Most convince themselves that they can make the transition to the tournament, but it's hard to escape the fact that those with playoff experience usually hold the edge.

"As slight as that advantage might be, you've got to take into consideration that almost every game at this level, and even the district level, is decided by one run," Grove City coach Ted Williams said. "The team that plays with the most poise, gets the key hit with runners on base and doesn't make a pivotal error usually wins.

"How much does previous tournament experience figure into that? You can't really measure it, but I'd rather have kids who have played in that type of atmosphere that we'll see at Ohio State's new facility than have a bunch of kids awed by the surroundings."

Grove City (25-4) meets Brunswick (21-5) in a Division I regional at 5 p.m. Thursday at Ohio State. Dresden Tri-Valley (23-6) faces Gahanna (24-5) there today.

Led by pitcher Paige Myers (19-1), Grove City is making its third trip to the regional in four seasons and Gahanna its second in three seasons.

"There is an awe factor playing on a big-time college field for the first time, and it should help that our seniors went through this when they were sophomores," Gahanna coach Jim Campolo said. "All the teams in this regional are pretty strong top to bottom. We're all trying to look for any edge we can get that might swing the outcome."

In Division II, DeSales has reached the regional tournament with just one senior, who plays sparingly. The Stallions (21-8) face Clyde today at Bucyrus.

"I'm really not that worried about our lack of experience on this kind of stage," coach Julie Barber said. "We just keep focusing on the fact that it's just another team on our journey. We've played such a killer schedule, we've sold into the idea of just beating the game and avoiding mistakes that are costly. Our kids have matured to the point where all the games are about the same to them."

In the other Bucyrus semifinal Thursday, two-time defending state champion Lakewood (25-5) meets LaGrange Keystone. Lakewood moved back to Division II after two seasons in Division III.

"Losing four starters from our championship team of last year and moving back to Division II, I suppose a lot of people thought we were in a rebuilding phase in a sense," Lakewood coach Criss Nadolson said. "We've got eight kids who have been through the wars and have two gold medals to show for it, and I don't think they're intimidated by any team or any situation they face."

Some observers thought Liberty Union coach Bill Putnam, with the No.3 seed, was crazy for jumping into the same bracket with No.1 seed North Union. The Lions beat the Wildcats 4-3 for their first district title since 1987.

"We chose that bracket because the next round winner went to Lancaster, in our backyard," he said. "I thought our kids would be more comfortable in that environment than going across the state (to Wright State)."

Other area regional qualifiers are Logan Elm (21-6) in Division II, Highland (20-9) in Division III and Danville (22-7) in Division IV.

I just noticed that Elyria has a bit of an advantage to winning the state title. Look at this.

http://brackets.digitalschoolnetwor...aspx?not=4&t=1253&ts=2703&ia=1&sp=50&dv=1&g=g

Elyria is the only state-ranked team on their half of the bracket. I realize that polls aren't perfect, but it does give you a broad (although imperfect) sense of relative strength on the whole.

If I was a head coach, I'd certainly want to be on the left hand side, rather than the right-hand side, of those brackets.

Since you can deffently make an argument for 3 Federal League teams that should have been ranked. Massillon Perry, North Canton Hoover and Boardman. Lets alo not forget the 4 years it has been an all NE Finals.sense of relative strength on the whole.

Lets also not forget 7 of the last 9 state title were won by a NE Ohio team and in the last 4 years it has been an all NE Finals.

I am not saying a NE Ohio will win it this year because Paige Myers is an outstanding pitcher and just like Tess Sito she is do. My point is don't underestimate the strength of the NE Ohio team. Since recent history has shown NE Ohio has been the powerhouse of DI softball.

While Elyria is an exceptional team (a state title & three runner-ups in the last four years), the Federal League teams certainly know a thing or two about softball.

In the past twelve years, the (current) Federal League teams have SIX state titles, two state runner-ups, two state semifinalists & two regional finalists. I assure you that, if I were Elyria, even being as great as they are, I'd not "want" to be looking at a showdown with a Federal League team, regardless if it's Perry or Boardman.

Did anyone else notice that Elyria didn't even WIN their region? Guess that side of the bracket wasn't so attractive after all. ;)

But Grove City did win theirs, taking out 3 top 10 ranked teams in the process. On paper, it is the Lady Greyhound's title to lose, but Lakota East, Perry and Holland Springfield are all capable and worthy opponents. Good luck to all of the D-1 finalists. It should be a great weekend. Go Dawgs!

I love over-confidence (it is nobody's "title to lose" ... not this year at least). There are no clear cut favorites in D-I.

I agree with you, which is why I qualified my comment. The success of the FL teams in recent years leads me to say that maybe Perry should be the favorite. The polls don't mean anything so I am definitely not over confident. The best team will win, I just hope it's Grove City.
