Possible stupid volleyball questions...

I am new to high school v-ball but will be watching alot of it over the next 4 years.

I have a couple of questions...

First off, I was suprised to hear that the server gets the point even if the ball is hit back and forth 20 times without the server ever touching the ball again. (I guess I always thought that the last person to hit the ball over would get the point).

1st question- With the new rule that a point can be awarded to either team, no matter who serves...Who gets awarded the point on your team if you win that point off of the other teams serve???

Does high school v-ball have players that only play front or back row?

Does anyone make the whole trip around or is everyone replaced in & out during games?

If a tall girl who plays front row is also a very good server, can she rotate through the front row and serve before being taken out?

Does most v-ball programs keep the best players on the court with very little switching players in & out?

Freshman programs - Are the girls coached in all positions or do they start that young in only having the girls do one position, ...ie... front row, back row???

I guess it's the whole rotation with people going in & out that confuses me a little.

Feel free to add other info...

Q1 - It's known as "rally scoring". There is no individual scoring. Only team scoring. The two teams play to 25 in the first two games of the match, then to 15 in the third game. A point is awarded for each service. For example - Team A serves the ball, there are 4 or 5 volleys over the net, with an eventual "kill" by the B team. Then the B team gets a point, and the serve.

Q2 - This year, the high schools are using the "libero" position. This is where you can insert a defensive specialist into the back row at any time, though she cannot serve. This position can only be played by one player in any game.

Players can rotate through the court without leaving. They don't necessarily have to leave the court at all.

You always play your best girls. There are no"equal" playing time rules in high school athletics.

As far as girls being coached in all positions, it'll depend on their body type. My daughter is a 5'-2" setter. They won't play or practice her as a hitter because of height. Also, they probably won't use a particulary tall athlete at the libero position.

Hope this helps.

Coach11 could probably add more a little more detail.

Not sure what the colleges were using, but junior olympic volleyball has had both rally and libero for a while.
I believe that the High schools are using rally scoring for the first time this year.

The libero can be taken out anytime. Normally, when she would rotate to the front row, she's out. Then I believe she can step back into the back row after her team loses their next serve.
Again, someone else may know better than I.

OK...I now understand "rally scoring" and the "libero position" a little bit.

So, the libero can replace someone that just completed serving and ride all three positions in the back row.
If there can only be one player @ the libero position per game then no other player can be inserted into the back row but her? Right?

....but you can still bring in someone to serve right?

Can the libero be taken out one play and re-inserted the next? If so, I guess you could keep her in the back row practically the whole game if you wanted to.
Is that what you think most teams will do to take advantage of the new rule?

Has the libero position and rally scoring been used in college and is just now hitting the high schools?

Thanks

The Libero can go in for anyone in the back row and can be inserted, then removed, and then reinserted for a different player in the back row again. There must be one rally in between their reinsertion. They cannot serve, however, they are allowing it in college this year and there is speculation they will be allowed to do so in HS next season. Also, a libero cannot attack or hit the ball in an offensive manner, only pass to someone else, or set the ball too another back row player for an attack. A team does not have to use a libero, but if they want to, they must designate who that person is prior to the start of the game and that person must wear a different color jersey from the other team members to identify them. This person is the only libero that can be used in that game, but can be changed for the next game and so on.

In addition to a Libero, a team can use a defensive specialist for backrow purposes and that person can serve. This person though is tied to the player they go in for, as they can come out, but can only be resubstituted for the same player they came in for originally for the rest of the game.

Both a defensive substitution and a Libero can be in the game at the same time.

As for scoring, High Schools will play a best of 5 format this year. The first four games would be played to 25 and if a fifth is needed it will be played to 15. This only for Varsity however, as JV and Freshman will play best of three with games on and two to 25 and three if needed to 15.
