Positive Reflections

Despite falling in the championship final (and congrats to St. Ignatius), a few positive reflections for Centerville basketball fans/followers...
Since the founding of the school in 1924 (that's 100 years for you math genius's), prior to 2020, the Elks had never been to the Ohio State BB finals.
Under Coach Cupps' leadership, since the '20-21 season, the Elks have amassed a 4-year cumulative record of 100-17, including a stretch of 45 in-a-row.
They have won 5 consecutive GWOC conference titles, 4 straight Regional titles, 3 state championship finals appearances and an ever-elusive state title.
In addition, they have indirectly represented Ohio in multiple interstate competitions, including victories against some of the best teams from across the U.S and for whatever it's worth, reached a ranking as high as #7 in the nation at one point, according to MaxPreps.
Tough as it is to lose in the state final, in retrospect and historically, I am certain that 20, 30 and 60 years from now, all Elk followers will look back with great appreciation at the accomplishments of this past 4-5 year run. As either a public, or private school, few teams in Ohio basketball history have had the chance to fullfill such a destiny on behalf of their school. Hats off to the kids, the coaches, & the program for raising the bar to this height for us supporters to enjoy...

Classy post! And a great run for the Elks. Enjoy the ride! In a lot of ways, this year may have been the best coaching job by Coach Cupps. In some of the past years, his team has been loaded (especially with his son!) This year, while there still was talent, there obviously weren't the same level of expectations as in the past. And for the team to come together and make such a strong run to the State title game says so much about the quality of the coach and the character of the players. And you are absolutely right. Several years from now, Centerville fans will be able to look back on this 4-5 year period with great pride.

Agree, and many times I have seen him say something to the effect of the kids had to choose to put individual goals aside for the team. I know a kid quit and some important pieces were benched during the season, coaches would love to pick his brain to hear how he brought it together because they all go through stuff like that..

Of all the teams in the tournament, I feared Centerville the most. The team is superbly coached, emphasizes defense, and is very disciplined - the foundations of a championship. You team NEVER quit! NEVER. That reflects, not only the coaching, but the families who raised them. You should be very proud of them and the example they set for subsequent teams; they will definitely be back.

Congratulations to the Centerville community, players, coaches and staff! What an outstanding accomplishment!

However, The current Centerville run is coming off the heels of the Trotwood run in basketball and football (playoff run 2006-current). The basketball run from 2013-19 had 4 state appearances including 3 consecutive state final appearances from 2017-2019 winning it in D2 in 2019. They also were members of the GWOC during that era with a 6-year conference record of 69-3, winning it every year except 2013, finishing with an 8-2 record. They had 1 conference loss for the next 5 years!

They also had 2 seperate graduating classes in which the seniors played in a football and basketball championship in the same year, 2014/2019.
Eight seniors on the 2014 basketball team played on the 15-0, 2011 football team as freshmen and played in the state finals in football every year in high school. During their 2014 basketball run as seniors in Division 1 they defeated, in order: Wayne, Lasalle, and Moeller, before losing to Upper Arlington in the State Semi-Final. The 2019 team had 5 instrumental guys for both sports and 2 that were first team all-state in both sports. Those 5 seniors won state in football and basketball that year and played in 3 football state championships winning it in '17 and 19'. Lastly, during that historic run the 19' basketball team set many state records including points scored in a season: 3,000+.

Trotwood has represented OHIO over the years playing competition across the U.S. in both sports and even 4 football showcase games on ESPN. Now even fewer schools have accomplished that in such a short time and that's as a public and you can count the transfers on one hand during that period. By the way, during that era they didn't lose to Centerville until 2020! Now that's unmatched pedigree!

No one ever mentions the superb coaching, amazing, supportive parenting, the culture that was established in the building by the administration and the amazing cohesion of all to make it work for years.

These accomplishments will never get the respect they deserve.
