Following the thread on the Basketball forums concerning using MaxPreps RPI for determining tournament seeds. Would implementing this in Volleyball, and requiring teams to enter all information into MaxPreps, be an improvement to the current method(s) employed by each District?

I forget, do the coaches vote on the seeding? I am for anything that takes away the political element in HS Sports.

In the NE district, yes the Coaches vote to determine the seeding. Teams submit their bio that consists of their record against opponents by Division (e.g., D1 3-2, D2 4-1, etc.) with some additional notes, then coaches rank all the teams, omitting their own team.

What is the logic for the rankings? How much does a loss hurt them in the rankings - if a lot, do teams not play the tougher teams. Thinking of when football limited the number of teams making the playoffs and the Harbin rankings determined who made it, teams wouldn't play a tough schedule in fear of one loss would be determinantal to their standings - one year Colerain was one of the better teams in the state and didn't make the playoffs because a GGCL upset them the first game of the season and the GMC stunk so bad they couldn't gather enough points to make it.

Even though there will be bias when ranking teams, be it league, public vs private etc., you think these coaches would at least make a sincere effort to properly rank these teams.

I am not sure it would really matter either way. You get funky rankings with human and computer polls. I'll just use my Alma Mater, St. Henry, for example.

While we are a very good D3 team this year given our size, the fact that MaxPreps currently has us slotted as the 6th best team in the state regardless of divisions is kind of funny. Yes we play a very hard schedule for our size, but we are one of the smallest D3 schools and ranked up there with schools that probably have 5x the number of girls we have.

MaxPreps also has us ranked higher than our neighbors to the north Coldwater. Mind you Coldwater have beaten us twice this season; 2-0 in an early season tournament, and then 3-1 a week and a half later in conference play. Is St. Henry better than Coldwater now? Maybe, but you cannot look objectively at that and justify the ranking calculated.

Point being this is just an example of one team, who knows the countless other wacky rankings they may have going on. At the end of the day I am not really sure it matters how the teams are ranked. It's up to the coaches and players to get momentum during the game and carry it through. Lets be honest besides a few districts seeding generally probably doesn't matter and the best team is going to make it out.

Sweet Sixteen for St. Henry, defeating Coldwater in the District final. Maybe the ranking wasn't that far off.

Absolutely. But if their system would be used Coldwater wouldn't have been the #1 seed which they earned by beating us in the regular season.
