Perfect Harbin Score

A Perfect Harbin Score has never been recorded. To achieve one a team needs to go 10-0 and play 10 teams that go 9-1 and all teams involved are D1.

What is the highest recorded Harbin score?

I remember one year Canfield had around 38 Harbin points and would have won every region except for one that year. That might be the record for most Harbin points for a non D-I school. Mind you I didn't check this, but I don't think a school below D-I has ever got over 40 Harbin points. The only team that comes to mind that might have done it is possibly is Archbishop Hoban.

The highest I found for Canfield was 2017 when they had 34. St V and Toledo Central Catholic both had 37 in D3 about 10 years ago. Chardon had 35 last year. Massillon had 39 in D2 twice. Midview had 39 in D2. That was a very quick search going back about 10 years and not totally thorough.

Regardless it appears no team outside of D-I has got over 40 in the past 22 years. For some reason I thought Canfield had 38 one year.

Cardinal Mooney had 2 years that were real close to 40, 2007 and 2009.

2007: 39.4237 Division 4
2009: 38.1092 Division 3

Pretty impressive from a DIV/DIII school!!

Note: St. Xavier 2007 total was based off of 6 divisions which would make it lower than what it would of been since expansion to 7 divisions in 2013. If someone wants to take the time to figure out their Harbin total equivalent for 7 divisions in comparison to those other examples of Harbin totals post expansion.

With the 7-division scale, and assuming the division assignments of their opponents would have been the same (including non-Ohio teams), I have 2007 St. X at a 49.4250 average, based on L1 = 63.0 and L2 = 414.0 (10 games played, L2 divisor = 96).

I could not find it but in 1971 the OHSAA did the Harbin as a test run for the 1972 season. In 1971 I believe Class AA Steubenville Catholic Central led the state in Harbin points.

9/11/1971 Cleveland John Hay 34-0
9/17/1971 @Wellsburg (WV) Brooke 16-0
9/25/1971 Wintersville High 20-0
10/2/1971 @east Liverpool High 14-6
10/9/1971 Pittsburgh (PA) Central Catholic19-6
10/16/1971 @Weirton (WV) Madonna 28-6
10/22/1971 Steubenville High 23-8
10/30/1971 Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas 40-0
11/6/1971 Youngstown North 31-0
11/13/1971 Austintown Fitch 28-0

I definitely recall seeing the 1971 Harbin rankings (I believe on JJ Huddle) but the OHSAA site only first back to the 1972 season. I’m sure the Harbin’s would have to be recalculated as well. The 1971 SCC team played mostly a Class AAA schedule and beat some very high ranking teams.

I believe the test run for the 1971 football season included a 3rd level point system. The OHSAA didn’t adopt the third level for the 1972 season.

So re-calculating Harbin counts to determine who had the best score since the inception of the system would take some Herculean Joe Eitel-level mathematical gymnastics.

From 1972-79, there were 3 divisions, and L1 points were 3 for beating a D1, 2 for a D2, and 1 for a D3.
1980-1990: 5 Divisions, with 3 L1 for beating a D1, decreasing by a half point per division to 1 for beating a D5.
1991-1993: 5 Divisions, with 4 L1 for beating a D1, decreasing by a half point per division to 2 for beating a D5.
1994-2012: 6 Divisions, with 6 L1 for beating a D1, decreasing by a half point per division to 3.5 for beating a D6.
2013-present: 7 Divisions, with 6.5 L1 for beating a D1, decreasing by a half point per division to 3.5 for beating a D7.

Also, the divisors have been handled differently in different eras. Early on, playing fewer games was a disadvantage, as it was just based on overall points accumulated. Later, in another era, L1 and L2 points were divided by relevant divisors and then added together. (For example, a team that played 9 games with 10 L1 points had the L1's divided by 0.9, resulting in 11.1111 L1 points). However, today, Joe uses an overall L2 divisor (you can see on his site), which he applies to ALL points once they've been amalgamated. So, yeah, if one had ALL the relevant data, it could be done, but it's a big ask.

Found this from the Nov. 16, 1971 edition of the Toledo Blade showing the final AP Rankings and the Computer's Ratings. Unfortunately, no computer points listed.

Massillon Washington - D2 2019 - 39.9000 is the closest I have found.
