The Ohio High School Athletic Association board of directors approved a recommendation Thursday to reinstate the 10-day rule for team sport coaches starting June 1.

The rule, otherwise known as General Sport Reglation 7.5.1, says members of a school team's coaching staff in the team sports of baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball may coach students from their school teams for a maximum of 10 days between June 1 through July 31, the time when students are out of school.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 10-day limitation was suspended in 2020 and 2021. The board of directors lifted that suspension on Thursday.

The 10-day maximum applies to the entire coaching staff and not each individual coach. The maximum does not translate to hours.

The regulation also says the 10-day maximum only applies to a coaching staff that is working with more than 50% of their student-athletes at one time.

Only non-contact football is permitted during the 10 days, according to the OHSAA. Student-athlete participation is not mandatory from June 1 to July 31.

There was an area coach that interpreted the rule as being 10 days and used his entire 240 hours.

“More than 50% at one time”. So this means you can work with half the roster for an hour then the other half for the next hour with no restrictions?

I think this refers to the old rule which is 50% of what it takes to play a game. ie baseball has 9 players, so you could work with 4 which is less than 50%.
Clarification is needed. The article makes it sound like 50% of total roster. That would change from school to school and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Who would be "on the roster" for certain in June and July?

The 50% rule is for students from the same school participating on a club team together. So for example, in softball/baseball no more than 4 students from 1 school can play on the same club team.

off season “skills training” is a different matter. So again, for baseball/softball coaches can do off season training with up to 6 athletes at a time.

For football, that number is 7. so you can have 1 coach work with 7 athletes at a time. You could have multiple coaches work with multiple athletes in multiple locations at one time as long as the total number is not more than 7 simultaneously. You can however work with those 7 athletes then bring in a different set of 7 athletes once finished.

That 50% rule is outlined in the general sports regulations.
