Ohio Valley Region of USA Volleyball Named Title Sponsor for OHSAA Volleyball State Tournaments
OVR is first sponsor for OHSAA’s inaugural boys volleyball state tournament to be held at Wittenberg University

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced a partnership with the Ohio Valley Region (OVR) of USA Volleyball to become the title sponsor for the OHSAA girls and boys volleyball state tournaments.

The 48th Annual OHSAA Girls Volleyball State Tournament will be held November 10-12 at the Nutter Center at Wright State University in Dayton. The Inaugural OHSAA Boys Volleyball State Tournament will be held May 25-26, 2023, at Wittenberg University in Springfield.

“The Ohio Valley Region of USA Volleyball is thrilled to partner with the OHSAA and serve as the first title sponsor for the girls and boys volleyball state tournaments,” said Brian Hofman, OVR Commissioner. “The OVR and the OHSAA have been strong partners and advocates in promoting the sport of volleyball for decades in Ohio. Through the collaborative efforts of the OVR and OHSAA, the future continues to look bright for all young student-athletes playing volleyball at the highest level in a game that also teaches life lessons, develops future leaders and creates positive life-long memories.”

OVR will have a presence at the OHSAA girls and boys volleyball state tournaments and throughout the year as the OHSAA collaborates with OVR to grow the game of volleyball for girls and boys in Ohio.

“We love OVR’s passion for the game of volleyball and their expertise in running youth volleyball tournaments throughout Ohio,” said Doug Ute, OHSAA Executive Director. “We believe this partnership will give the sport of volleyball increased exposure to girls and boys across the state.”

Ute also praised Wittenberg University for serving as the host site for the boys volleyball state tournament.

“As we announced earlier this year, we are very excited to welcome boys volleyball to the OHSAA and we are thrilled to announced that Wittenberg University will host our inaugural state tournament next May,” Ute said. “Wittenberg also hosts our cheerleading state tournament in December and continues to be a great partner.”

Can anyone explain why they moved the tournament to a Thursday and Friday? I would think this will definitely hurt attendance, especially on Memorial Day weekend.

I don’t know for sure, but it’s probably to avoid actually being on that weekend and to also avoid going into June and/or the last week of May when lots of graduation things are going on

Never reminder that being a problem (graduations). This is what I was worried about with being sanctioned. Drastic changes like these suck.
It never was, no, but I'm just guessing at their thought process. This change is hardly drastic. Everything got pushed ahead by about a week. The girls' tournament starts on a Thursday as well. People are gonna be super hesitant to the changes that'll come because of how things operated for 30+ years, but going to the OHSAA is ultimately good for the growth of the sport so we're just gonna have to be openminded.

Girls tournament may start on Thursday but the finals aren't until Saturday. Big difference! I agree moving to the OHSAA is a good thing but the state tournament on the weekend allowed families to stay in town all weekend. Now many will be dealing with Memorial Day weekend plans and younger kids still in school possibly. I expect attendance will be down from past years due to this change.
