Ohio Lawmakers Call for Schools to change Native American Names

There has been some pressure since 2020 but it is ramping up. Clevelan.com had ran a tory last year listing some of the teams and their actions.

Unlikely to pass anyways, IMO.

Far from a fan of most Native American imagery and caricatures these days. But if a community / school board is unwilling to change it themselves, being given orders from Columbus isn’t going to change their opinions on the matter even if the mascots are changed.

The most pragmatic proposal is likely to just get pressure on the OHSAA to eschew using mascots of participating schools come tournament time and promotional/media materials.

Also: Raiders is a mascot that doesn’t belong in this categorization unless the genesis and depiction of the mascot is Native-related.

In southern Ohio there are two schools who use it, neither of which have a connection/implication to Native people. River Valley (Gallia County) is based off the NFL franchise [school was created in the early 1990’s.] Morgan is actually Confederacy related — that one is problematic anyways because it invokes John Hunt Morgan’s Raiders.

Some of these I can see why a school isn’t eager to change. Warriors, etc. but schools still using red men? YIKES.
Yeah Redskins & Redmen is a big yikes.

Warriors is another one that falls into “not all Warrior mascots is NA-related.” Handful of Christian schools use it in the context of ‘fighting to preserve faith.’

The fact that Wintersville and Mingo went from Warriors and Indians into the Indian Creek Redskins really just... Didn't read the room.

Our nickname is Girard Indians but we’ve changed most everything to a Georgia G logo. There are a few indian images still used in a few places which are based on an old photo of a Native American. It’s not a clip art kind of cartoonish image. An effort has been made to avoid anything offensive. I would hope it’s acceptable but it is what it is.

So the mascot thing is one thing but what about the actual school names?

For example, there is a school named Indian Valley. Is that going to have to be changed?

And this thread had stayed reasonable for so long.

Good! I know Lakota has upset the massive Native American population of Seneca/Sandusky counties with their Raiders mascot :D

Are the towns, townships, rivers, and counties next? Wapakoneta Redskins? Both town and nickname. Shawnee Indians. Both township and nickname. Ottawa River. Village of Ottawa. Ottawa County. Seneca County and almost half the schools have NA nicknames. Stop the insanity, this is getting ridiculous!

Rock Hill High school out of Ironton is called the Red Men. Outside of them we have plenty of Indians and warriors in southeastern but another similar is Northwest high school McDermott, is called the Mohawks.

Reactionary legislature would pounce as soon as that happened. Probably best to just let it play out. They will be gone eventually.

If any of the city's or school boards want to change their mascot then I am 100% in favor of them doing so. But the government should do nothing more then recommend they do so.
