New Jersey Boys Basketball...Winning Shot Overturned...Chaos

This is one of the worst calls I've seen and it has to stand. I think NJ is going to have to put some provision in now where review can be used. How could one of the officials know 100% sure that the ball was in the hand when the buzzer went off and isn't there 3 officials? Did one claim they didn't see it? It really wasn't even that close.

If you watch the huddle of the officials the AD of Camden is also in the huddle with the assistant director of njsiaa. Clearly foul play is involved

Yea definitely scored before the buzzer. Camden coach should do the right thing and admit it. Something fishy about the whole thing.

May be for the “Ask The Ref” thread, but can they protest this? With all the cameras out there and we’ve only seen a handful of clips that show the ball being released well before the buzzer went off and clock at zero, this should be easy to reverse if it’s even possible to do.

The right thing to do would be for Camden to forfeit the win but We all know that won’t happen.
Yep.

We often forget that the 2009-2010 rule change that allows (not requires) states to use video replay to determine if a goal scored at the expiration of time in the 4th quarter or any overtime period should be counted and/or if it's a two or three point goal, was the result of the 2008 Ohio Girl's D1 last second shot that was incorrectly ruled upon.

That rule change was recommended by the OHSAA.

Apparently, the lawsuit has been filed.

It already got thrown out.

No court will overturn an incorrect call by a ref. Precedent is always on sticking with the call, even if incorrect. Courts would do nothing but review games if they started doing this.

A lawsuit over the outcome of a high school sporting event may be the whitest white person thing anyone has ever done.
What if the situation was reversed? Would it be the blackest black thing anyone had ever done?

Come on you’re better than that. If you knew 1000% your players got hosed and it was backed up by numerous amounts of video evidence, you’d do the same. If not then you shouldn’t be in a role to help your guys.

Well, you appeal to the sport governing body of which you are a signatory. Which they did, and it got rejected. Thats that. You can fight to get a rule changed, or for video reviews, or something, but suing because you lost a game? Yup, that’s something only the parents or administrators of a rich white kid school would do. What a life lesson for these kids to learn! Oh, something didn’t go your way and you got screwed? Sue!

Again why is it only rich white kids? What if the situation was reversed? Just answer that one question. If your kid was on the losing end of this game would you just take the ho hum it’s a learning experience thing mind set?

To be transparent I would not with all the video evidence that is out there.

Camden literally was removed from the playoffs last year over a fight. Did they sue because it wasn’t fair?

No clue, but the melee was on film as well and the officials were all 3 in agreement of what was going on. The video was sent to the governing body of New Jersey, and they made the call. Video evidence backed up the officials covering the game.

Just answer the question. What if Camden had gotten screwed over with video evidence?

They abided by the state’s sport governing body, of which they were a signatory. Manasquan isn’t and decided to sue. My point is that Camden wouldn’t sue. Lawsuits over petty issues are a super privileged thing to do given the cost of legal fees. Mansaquan had a right to be upset and they had a right to appeal to the state’s sport governing body. They ruled what they ruled. You don’t go suing because you don’t like the outcome.

I would accept the outcome, because in this case, the school voluntarily agreed to be a member of an organization knowing they have a rule that says “outcomes are final even if they’re wrong.” You signed up to play by that ruleset. You don’t get to change it when it doesn’t suit you.

Nobody sued anyone

Full situation from the hudl cam

For those that are of the opinion that reffing/officiating is challenging/hard to do/difficult/not easy/etc...I concur. However, making the right and proper call in this situation is none of these.

Everyone that has good vision knows that the shot should have counted...No question. Everyone in attendance knows that...Anyone that watches video of the final shot knows this as well.

The final result is clearly tainted and the declared winning team should do the right thing and not claim the win. They, and everyone else, knows that the win was not legitimate. How can this team, with a clear conscience, proceed on knowing this?

The referees involved should never again be permitted to officiate a game higher than the middle school level and the governing body of high school athletics in New Jersey really needs to come out of the dark ages pertaining to its bylaws/rules.

Great. They can post an ad for new officials with the proviso that one mistake means they lose their job.

How about the one ref who said the basket should have counted? He should lose his job also because he lost the argument?
No.

If one of the referees determined that the final shot taken was before the final buzzer but was overruled by the other refs a statement regarding that should be issued and that ref should not suffer any consequences as a result of this occurrence.

The official who convinced the crew that the shot was late will most likely lose assignments because of this. However, it won't be by mandate, nor should it be.

My guess is they adopt the NFHS rule that allows for replay on a last second shot in the 4th and overtime periods
