On the OHSAA website they have posted an opening for the Toledo St. Francis job. What happened here with Keith Kennedy? Did he resign or was he let go?

After some researching, I found out that Kennedy has left TSFD and GTAC to take over the Head Coaching and CEO spot at San Clemente Aquatics in California. Tony Kurth has been named the new coach for TSFD and GTAC.

Coach Kennedy decided to leave on his own. Tony Kurth was quickly hired. He is a 1999 graduate of TSFD and has been coaching at a small private school in Michigan. He has had a lot of success in Michigan, so the TSFD swim community is very excited for the future.

The hiring process is a little involved as you have two entities hiring someone. The coach works for St. Francis and he runs/"owns" GTAC. GTAC is not a parent run club and the board has some influence; however, the final decision is up to the powers to be at St. Francis. Tony does not have experience in running an age group club, but he has worked at a very private/expensive school and has been dealing with involved parents. He is keeping most of the GTAC coaches, which should help. As you know, all that matters to the parents is that their child swims faster, so as long as he can pick up where Coach Kennedy left off, he will be fine with the age group swimmers. He has a lot of young talent on the high school team, and he has had a lot of success with high school swimmers. He had an unbelievable career at St. Francis and is very highly respected in the St. Francis community, so it looks like an outstanding hire. The proof will be next February in Canton.

Kurth's credentials as a competitor are exceptional. Hopefully, that has translated well to coaching. When Kyle Goodrich took over as coach at St. Charles some questioned his credentials and he built the program up to an unprecedented level. Kurth starts with a stronger program that just hasn't been able to make it over the hump and win the state title in recent years despite great talent. Maybe he will bring that extra something to move them to the top of the podium. He's been there as a competitor both individually and with his team.
