Jim Knowles leaving OSU for Penn State

Reading up on this there must've been friction within the coaching office between Day and Knowles and reportedly Larry Johnson too.

Any ideas who they replace him with? Anyone on staff like possibly Laurinitas? Do they bring someone in and if so will they keep the defensive staff? Seems like some big egos taking their stance here.

Won’t miss Knowles, I still don’t think he was all that good and got by with having better talent than everyone else. We saw in 2022 how bad his defense was when he didn’t have top shelf talent.

Promoting Matt Guerreri would be a MAJOR let down. Sure he could be really good in a few years but THIS is Ohio State where you should be able to land the best coaches in the country at anytime.

personally I’m calling DJ Durkin who’s an Ohio guy and is a great recruiter especially having so many connections to the southeast where all of the best talent is. Knowles was a terrible recruiter and LB recruiting didn’t get fixed until Laurinaitis came on board
 
I would prefer Leonhard(sp?). Guerreri has a lot of support for him, too, but I don't know him. I will trust whoever Day wants. He's earned the trust.

Leonard would be another home run and I didn’t really consider him because OSU to my knowledge has never run a 3-4 and don’t recruit the 1 technique well enough to run it at a super high level
 
Jim Knowles in rivalry games as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and Ohio State:

  • 2018 - L to Oklahoma, 48 points allowed
  • 2019 - L to Oklahoma, 34 points allowed
  • 2020 - L to Oklahoma, 41 points allowed
  • 2021 - W vs. Oklahoma, 33 points allowed
  • 2022 - L to Michigan, 45 points allowed
  • 2023 - L to Michigan, 30 points allowed
  • 2024 - L to Michigan, 13 points allowed
 
So I've heard Knowles sister is bat crazy and she is going out that way too. I'm not on X, what am I missing? First I heard of her
 
Never a fan of his approach. OSU shouldn't be about Defensive schemes. He was part of NC run and the team played well. Move along Knowles and I wish you success. I do hope we put 50 on you next year. Let's see if Penn State players make you successful. I look for you to have a tough year.

I think he is no.1 on a lot of fans wish list. Jerod Mayo possible candidate? Supposedly Oregon's DC is getting a lot of buzz, Ducks defense gave up a lot of pts. vs PSU and OSU. Give Tx. DC a call did the best vs OSU.

I'm right there with you. I'm not sold on that it was him alone why Ohio State had a top defense. They had talent. And he still got beat by Michigan by letting them control the line of scrimmage. I saw your other post about his performance against rivals and it's not pretty. I believe Day can do better and I hope he does his due diligence and finds a quality replacement.

I do hope that when he finds a DC he also finds a better DB Coach. Way too many penalties this year by the DBs.
 
Penn State loses it's best player in that TE and Franklin still doesn't know how to recruit and coach a quality QB. Have fun Knowles but for $10M who can blame you for leaving. I seriously doubt you will be missed.

Knowles was awful about defending the LOS against power run teams. Just glad he’s gone, OSU can do so much better. Frye still needs to go to. I give him 0 credit for the offensive line performance. All goes to Chip Kelly. OSU has a real chance to become a consistent dominant program similar to Alabama under Saban but Ryan can’t mess up these assistant coach hires
 
Ok , Do you want the reason Knowles left for REAL? I have the contacts . One who is a GA who could hear the discussions on the headsets between Day and Knowles during games. So here it is: It was a shite show. From the Oregon loss early in the season up until the end Day would constantly rip Knowles calls on defense and they would disagree to the point they were telling each other to F off during games . So Knowles knew he was leaving probably since late October. NOW , that doest excuse KNowles from being a little p-ssy and telling his players that HE WOULD BE BACK after they won the chip. So he lied right to his players faces basically. Theres the story . Its OSU for goodness sake ,they should be able to get a very capable replacement for KNowles ... ( Saban used to rip his assistants right on the sideline live on TV in front of millions. .This is not something that head coaches dont do)

Yes , i had already read that article. If you look at Knowles track record he basically stays for 3 yrs or so at places then moves on. And with the experience he had coming back on defense this year he knew his defense would rank very high in the country both against the run and pass . Still give him some credit but it would have taken a real moron to not have success coaching this years OSU defense . Hes like a scientist in the lab when it comes to his coaching and also his decisions on when it time time to move on . He is an IVY league grad. Smart and calculated. That all being said I dont think Day is bummed out he left . their relationship was declining on a professional level

Allar will be picked in the top 3 rounds. Is that what you meant? If so, I will grant you that. Top 3 in the draft, no way, barring a huge improvement next year.

He has great size, an OK arm, and can really run. The tools are there. Accuracy and decision making are issues. He piled up stats against the bad defenses. But lets face it, against OSU and in the 4 post season games, he looked pretty pedestrian. 70-129 (54%) with 6 TDs, 4 picks. He needs to play a lot better against the best competition.

I get that NEO and Medina folks have a higher opinion of the kid, no problem. But he is not quite there yet.
